One of the docs that was still left in her office saw me and said I needed 2 crowns and a deep cleaning to the tune of a few thousand dollars!? Needless to say, I thought it was totally suspect that my dentist retires and all of a sudden I need this, right? So, I decided to get a second opinion. Dr. Paul had good reviews from Yelp, checked his license, etc. He told me you will get different opinions from different dentists, some are more conservative than others and I said yes but also the dental 'groups' will try to upsell meaning, if it is a group and not an independent dentist, they may try to sell you a more expensive crown or do work that you do not need. Well, he basically said I did not in his opinion need the crowns or the deep cleaning. This other lady in the room next to me heard me on the way out and told me to stick with him, he's the best lol. His assistant B. was also a doll and I told them if I ever need anything done in the future I will be back, as honesty is STILL the best policy in my book and very rare nowadays! Thank you Dr. Paul!! Every aspect of the customer service was warm and calm and cheerful. I also took my son, who is 9 and was worried about everything - he was treated kindly and respectfully. In the past, I've seen dentists that find all kind of issues that were conveniently covered by insurance. Or, they poke you in the gums with a sharp instrument and say - WHOA you're gums bleed, you need a special deep cleaning that your insurance will pay for! Huh. A sharp dental instrument made me bleed? What a racket. When either of those two things happen I'm not coming back to your office. Nothing of the sort happened to us. First, the x-rays at the dentist can sometimes be the hardest part! I really appreciated the dental assistant's way of handling my occasional issue - she just calmly moved on to the next area (which required a different bite), and then went back to the problem areas later. This definitely kept me from getting flustered and it was no problem when she went back. It had been a year (COVID) since we had been to the dentist. They could have told me anything and I might have believed it. But we both were cleaned up and polished by Dr. Phil. No cavities. No pressure to do anything unnecessary. Good advice about braces, too! Also, the cleaning was that little water pressure deal, no scraping. Thank the lort. Fast and pain free. Naturally, everything was very clean, everyone was masked and gowned and there was hand sanitizer everywhere, etc. It is a nice office in general. Cool that you get x-rays and treatment all in one room. We will be back and I will be recommending Lancaster Dental to others.

Based on my experience working in dental billing, the procedure could have been billed using an alternative code, such as an open-and-medicate procedure, which was covered under her insurance plan. Instead, the office chose to bill a non-covered code, resulting in an unnecessary financial burden. Rather than discussing my concerns professionally, Dr. Kim became argumentative and dismissed my explanation, referring to it as my "propaganda. My concern is that my daughter was billed for non-covered procedures without being properly informed beforehand, despite covered alternatives being available in certain situations. I work in dental billing and understand insurance coding and reimbursement practices. It was clear that Dr. Kim was not receptive to the fact that I was knowledgeable about the billing process. I was alarmed that this office wouldn't even do a cleaning because of this "gum disease" and referred me to a periodontist for a deep cleaning and scaling. The periodontist, Dr. Yeoung, said I not only needed a deep cleaning, but also bone grafting and possibly implants. Alarm bells went off in my head because I have been so diligent with my dental hygiene for years and never even have had any bleeding during a cleaning. Also, it was going to be thousands of dollars that I didn't have. (Delta Dental would pay $1,000). I was freaked out and called my Ojai dentist and made the drive for advice. My trusted hygienist told me there was NOTHING WRONG WITH MY GUMS. These two dentists are upselling procedures and obviously are working together to swindle vulnerable patients, (which is easy to do since we can't see very well inside our own mouths and trust them for their expertise).
