Our house was vacant and we were out of the country, so we decided to have carpeted floors replaced…read morewith solid hardwood , two rooms of carpet in the basement replaced, carpet re-stretched in the basement and the baseboards replaced where the new hardwood was. Parts of the projects went fine. They tore out the old floors and prepared them for the hardwood, one of the rooms that got new carpet was fine and the restretch was also fine. The hardwood was smooth and level and overall pretty good, but for some unexplained reason, the installer had used black bondo in gaps and cracks and blemishes in the wood. We had agreed to have the black filler used in knotholes, and they used matching filler in most of the rest of the floor, but where they switched to black, it looked like tar skid marks on a blond red oak floor, and it was very noticeable. They tell me that most people opt for black filler for all the voids. Since it's apparently a matter of taste, I'll leave the pictures of the before, and add some "after" pictures of the same spots. In one of the basement rooms, the installer used a mis-matched piece of carpet in the closet, and when I called on it, he said he ran out of the other so just installed the piece I had loose in that recently-added closet. He had seamed it to the new carpet but not used pad or tack strips. Eventually, they came back and fixed the closet carpet with a matching piece, (at their own expense) and though it took a bit of pushing, they eventually came and fixed all the black filler that was not in knotholes. The customer service fell short of my expectations, (and I suspect it fell short of their usual quality). Even with the problems, they DID make it right. They are less expensive than other flooring contractors that bid the work, and the finished product is good. If a customer decides to hire them, I recommend checking the progress of the job regularly and stopping anything that doesn't look right. They can and will put it right.
