This is such a cute spot with an affordable and great menu. I like how it explains the different ways you can order Momo- perfect for anyone who has never tried these delicious dumplings. I got the beef pan fried and the way were delicious. I do wish they served them with a soy based sauce as well as the tomato based one they had available. It's how I've eaten them at other places in the past and do enjoy that flavor to complement the light spice/heat. My mom got the veggie chow mein and liked it. For me, it was a bit bland or plain but she doesn't like complex or spicy foods so it was good for her. We shared veggie spring rolls and they were what you'd expect and came with a side of sweet chili dipping sauce. I'll order momos any time I can find them on a menu, and these rock! In this convenient-to-downtown location, the inside is cozy, the staff are friendly, and the food comes out fairly quickly and well made. There are other items on the menu, but the momos are king here. Bring friends if you want to order several types to share varieties, each order comes with 8 and their sauce. The momos themselves have a slight kick to them, and the sauce enhances the flavor. There's a decent choice of beverages, though I'm not sure tap water is actually an option here. Both were fantastic. I really enjoyed the beef momo especially, and the sauce that came with it was delicious. While not quite as good as the beef, the mushroom momo was still very tasty, and a nice vegan option. I also really enjoyed the broth that came with the jhol. The woman who served me was very friendly and I only had to wait a short time for my food to be ready. I just heard about a Nepali restaurant in Albany and I had to give it a try. It's right at the beginning of Central Ave in Albany NY in the old Trustco Bank location. The restaurant is tiny but the yellow toned walls remind me of a Caribbean or Mexican restaurant. As I observed the multi colored flags are a common decor in a Mexican and Nepali restaurant. This restaurant has 6 to 8 tables, with views covering Townsend Park, homeless people on Central Ave and some brick buildings on Washington Ave. The restaurant is well maintained and clean with good friendly service. The menu is limited. If it's working and the owners are making money, no comments and skip through. If they are looking for some recommendations, I would probably have them add more menu items as the food was flavorful. We ordered: combo set which comes with chowmein, fried momo and steam momo. Best value Jhol momo: almost tastes like minis in lentils soup. But the soup is made out of a tomato base.l which is spicy and tangy Chili momo: was my favorite, my son who can handle spicy food was sweating, this dish is made with stir fried chilies, onions, bell pepperane tomatoes. You have a variety of choices with the filling inside the momos. Vegetarians can choose from mushroom, veggies or chives. Meat options include pork, chicken and beef. In addition they have the chaiya, which is a Nepali tea. It's different and if you like bubble tea, you may like it. It's milky and sugary tea with some spices. There are only a limited people who have passed the tea making test, ones my friend, a masala tea on a train journey in India or me, myself and I. I would recommend the restaurant and probably be back again. I wish the restaurant owners the best of luck with a lot of restaurants nearby shitting down. I enjoyed takeout from this restaurant in Center Square that included onion rings and the C Momo - soft dumplings served in a tasty chili sauce with onions and peppers. I had a choice of chicken, beef, veggies, or paneer as filling, and I went with the chives/veggies. There were 8 delicious dumplings for about $15. What an incredible spot in Albany! I've never had Momo or Nepali cuisine at all, so I was really excited that it's available here in the Capital Region. My friend and I decided to order a little bit of everything. We ordered the Chicken Kothey Momo, a pan fried Momo that comes with a tomato and sesame based chutney, the Beef C Momo, a stir-fried version with chilis, onion, Bell pepper, and tomato, as well as Pork Jhol Momo, a steamed version served in a warm soup with tomato, sesame, peanut, garlic and spices. All three were incredible! It was hard to choose a favorite. There were 4 or 5 tables for four people, so there was a good amount of seating, and it was comfortable to dine in. Mystic Momo opened in July, becoming the capital region's first Nepalese restaurant, and I was so excited to try it out! As a huge momo lover, I was thrilled to see their incredible variety of dumplings--from momos in soup to chili momos (my personal favorite) and even chow mein. Mystic Momo's menu offers so much, and everything we tried was phenomenal , including their mango lassi and chai . We had the Johl Momo, Kheema Momo, C Momo, Fried Momo, and their chow mein. My favorite was definitely the C Momo--sweet, spicy, and tangy, just incredible. The Johl Momo and Kheema Momo were also insanely good, offering unique and delicious flavors. I still need to try their classic steamed momos to compare them to the ones I've had in India. The restaurant also has 6-7 tables and is well maintained, clean, and great service. I tried them for the first time this week. I got the momo combo and it was 4 steamed chive dumplings, 4 fried and a side of veggie lomein. I did not care for the orange sauce... it doesn't pair well with the chive imo. The chili sauce was great. My favorite thing was the veggie lomein. I didn't care for the taste of the steamed dumplings. It was my first time trying them. I tolerated the fried ones but I just don't think they're my thing. I will try the mushroom ones next time. The lomein was spectacular. Dont expect fast service, I hoped this meant my food was cooked to order lol. I look forward to trying other things on the menu. read more

Do you like dumplings? The Nepalese version are thin skinned and more crumbly meat than Chinese. This version had some kind of gently spicy peanut sauce. I went at an odd hour (330pm) and they were made fresh, not reheat. It's a bare bones place, with only a few tables. 2 public parking places close by - I hate circling, looking for a space. Total was $14.50 with tax for the plate. You can also up size your dish to 12 dumplings if you are hungry. I think it is a nice option. read more

My favorite was the pork , but I just have that bias, and probably wouldn't get the chives as the skin was a bit thicker than I would've liked. However, I'm really excited to try their other vegetarian options (mushroom and paneer). Mystic Momo is small Nepalese restaurant that limits its menu to a select few items. It is located on a busy street, Central Avenue, and parking may be a bit of a challenge. Inside, there are six tables (5 four tops and a "deuce" in the corner) and an ordering counter. The restroom is also in the corner, which, weirdly, has a fob to permit access. The fob is given to you by the cashier at the counter. This restaurant may be getting more traffic due to a recent article being published by a local magazine. I'm glad to have come across that article because I've never had Nepalese food before and was now excited to try it. Family run restaurants are awesome. There is a comforting feel about them. During my visit, the proprietor was behind the counter and a relative, aunt/mother, or friend was assisting him. He was really nice but I didn't want to impose so I left his co-worker alone. Anyway, on the to-go menu today: Beef Momo (Jhol) and Pork Momo (Kothey). Apologies in advance for comparing distinctly different cuisines but I hope it provides a frame of reference. Momos are dumplings which can be filled with meat, vegetables, or paneer. They remind me of Chinese soup dumplings without the soup inside. The dough is thicker, more substantial, and it holds up, more or less, even after being pan fried. The filling remains moist due to the fat content in either the ground beef or pork and it is also generously seasoned like a seekh kebab. Jhol is a soup made of tomatoes, sesame, peanuts, garlic, and spices. I found it to be very good; it had a slight tang mixed with the sweet richness of sesame and peanuts. Kothey is pan-fried to make crispy-bottomed momos. If you like fried dumplings, you won't want to pass on these. I had a quick question on the color of the beef momos, which have a pink hue to them. The proprietor said they add a little bit of food coloring to the dough to distinguish the beef momos from the others. It's not traditional but it is efficient for a restaurant. Side note: the chili sauce served on the side is no joke. It packs some heat. With the combination of a family-feeling restaurant, nice and efficient owners/workers, and carby, stick to your ribs cuisine, this place is really good. read more

Lucky folks in Albany to have such a great fresh Momo restaurant. We wanted some variety for our first visit and had a steamed mushroom momo, fried beef momo and the Jhol with paneer (cheese) momo as well as a chicken chow mein. It was all so satisfying and flavorful. 20 minutes after picking it up we were home with still hot food (since who wants a room temperature momo) and declared the meal delicious. The warm soup (Jhol Momo) was so delicious it's a must have. All the momo's were spicy, not mouth burning, palate numbing, but perhaps not for people sensitive to spices.... just order them Chow Mein, lots of flavor and while it has a little zing, it's most likely tolerable for even those sensitive to spice. Owners/staff are lovely, street parking might require a drive or two around the block.. but it's worth it. read more

So I'll start with the good news - the food was great, the momo perfectly good and the sauce tasty with a good amount of spice. The location is also very interesting, right by the monument near Henry Johnson Blvd. and (usually) a fascinating people watching spot as the place has good windows. The service was ATROCIOUS. We were the only two people in the restaurant, and it was right around 1pm on a Saturday (I think). Peak lunch hours. The employees stared at us when we walked in as if we had just walked into their living room unannounced. They proceeded to visibly mill around the small place as we waited to put in our order for tea to start. It took a good 10 minutes, and another 10 minutes to get water and finally place our order. Fast forward about 20 minutes, and four employees sat down at a table in the restaurant and proceeded to eat their own lunches together in silence, oblivious to the fact that it's peak lunch time and they had just TWO customers in the place with a very simple order. Finally we get our food, clearly "interrupted" by having to bring two plates to the table, which as I said, was very good - but it was hard to not be annoyed by the wait time and lack of attention. ASTONISHINGLY, they kept eating in silence and not even looking up. We finished and sat there looking around, trying to get their attention. Not even so much as a glance. Finally I stood up and politely asked if we could please have the check, as we needed to leave. One of them sauntered to the back without a word, handed us our check, and we finally paid and left. I was absolutely stunned. I have worked in a variety of restaurants myself when I was younger, and I cannot imagine sitting down among the patrons and taking a leisurely lunch with the other servers while there are customers in the dining area. I have a lot of compassion for people working in the restaurant industry because I know how difficult it can be to work with the public, but seriously - not even looking up ONCE to see if we needed anything?! It's also decidedly NOT a cultural thing, as I've been to Nepali restaurants before as well as a variety of authentic ethnic places and have never experienced anything so blatantly disrespectful to paying customers. I know it sounds like I am exaggerating, but I'm really not (or I wouldn't even be writing this review). It was unbelievable. Verdict: ORDER TAKEOUT. If it is like this all the time, this business is absolutely blowing a great location for a cute little place. read more

What a flavor bomb this food is!! We stopped for a quick bite for lunch and got the sampler, which included 4 steamed momos (a Nepalese dumpling) , 4 fried momos, and lo mein. We had fried pork and steamed chive momos. Everything was absolutely delicious and packed with flavor, and freshly made. The pork momos were crispy and generously filled. The chive momos were tender and yummy. The lo mein had great flavor as well, and loved the two spicy sauces on the side. Everything was a bit spicy but we love spicy food! We are big fans of the Momo. East Asian dumpling with South Asian taste. These momos are handmade to order -- so don't expect grab & go. Well worth the wait. Tasty. Served on proper plates, --way better than the cardboard used by many other places. Nice array of flavors. You'll need a mango lassi or clay pot yogurt to dampen the mouth heat. When I first saw the sign, I didn't know what a momo was. It's a Napali dumpling. Usually filled with either chicken, beef, pork or veggies. You can have them steamed, fried or served in soup. I tried the Keema Jhol momo. The momos were made with minced beef and served in Jhol which is a lightly sliced soup. It was very excellent and filling. My meal went well with the Mango Lassi drink as the Jhol was a bit spicy. It is a very small place. Not alot of seating, and it was full when I got there. Which is a good sign. The service was excellent and the waitress was attentive. There are many other items on the menu besides momos. The momos are not just mystic but magical. It is worth another visit. read more

What a gem such nice service in a very special place!! We travelled 1.5 hours for Nepalese food and struck gold. We started with the spicy tofu appetizer (great texture and heat- no too spicy and didn't linger) then had steamed chive Momos and fried chicken Momos. Both amazing, chive was a flavor explosion . Then thukpa. Nice married flavors with ground chicken and roasted chickpeas. Try the yogurt in the clay pot, sublime with subtle cardamom and cinnamon flavors. read more

My first experience with Nepalese cuisine. I ordered three styles of momo, which is a type of stuffed pasta dumpling. More similar to a semolina dough,, not thick and glutinous like rice dough. Clearly hand made with care. Jhol Momo is steamed dumplings served in soup. Nothing was too extreme in the soup, it was balanced and savory. Kothey Momo is like a pot sticker,, fried on one side and steamed. I got paneer cheese stuffing. It didn't have lots of cheese, but rather savory vegetables to round out the filling. It's served with chutney, a traditional sauce. I really enjoyed this even though I was expecting more cheese. The C (Chili) Momo is bathed in a spicy and slightly sweet red pepper sauce. It has bits of onion and pepper and shaved scallion. I got chicken stuffed. If you like General Tso's you'll like this, if you like Chicken Cacciatore you'll like this. It left my lips feeling pleasantly warm after eating. I'm curious to know what kind of chili pepper they use. Medium heat level, don't fear it. The owner was very nice and answered my questions, and language was not a barrier. The interior is bright and clean with several tables. The exterior is fresh and new. It IS at a very busy intersection of Albany, which is why I went between lunch and dinner hours. Be aware that if you're driving finding parking nearby could be tricky, but also be mindful of holding up traffic as you search for a spot. If necessary, drive around the block and regroup. The food is worth any extra work you have to put into getting it. I felt safe in the neighborhood, but be aware of your surroundings, it's a busy area with several main roads coming together at that location. Perfect if you come by bus! I'll be going back to try beef and mushroom momo next time, and Mango Lassi to drink. 24 pieces of momo for $36 not bad. If you want a sampler order the Combo Set, hidden at the bottom of the menu. We love Mystic Momo after our first visit. We ordered two different kind of momos and some fries for our kid to snack on. They didn't have tea, but did have mango lassis. The food was delicious! But beware the heat on the very spicy chili momos! There is no dhido or gundruk. This is strictly a momo centric place. It is still worth the visit. The prices are good, the place clean and pleasant, and the service was very friendly. There is limited seating but they do also do takeout. Will definitely be back for more! read more

This is a great place if you're looking for something different in the dumpling world. I had a number of the meat and veggie dumplings. They were all unique tastes. One caveat--most of the dishes seemed to be very spicy. I like spicy food and so does my wife, but I just say that as a heads up those who don't or have kids who don't. read more
