The Kentucky Dinner Tain was not really what I was expecting. The meal was very good--huge portions that most people could not finish. As nearly all were vacationing, very few people took leftovers home--it was a huge waste of good food. I had expected a ride through Kentucky countryside with narration of what we were seeing. There wasn't any--just a ride in one direction, and a ride back. Some of the scenery was pretty --most was just houses, some of them in need of major repair. If you want to eat dinner on a train, this is the event for you. But that's all there is. And it's fairly pricey--$150/person & then they suggested a 20% tip for the servers on the entire ticket price; not just the food cost. It's not anything I would do again. read more

I had hoped this would be a more memorable and unique experience, but it fell short of that. I had the butternut squash dish which was mostly onions and the brussel sprouts were tough and way undercooked. ***But more disappointing ( given the high ticket price!) was no narration given as we travelled the 2 hours. They toss you a card with 8 "points of interest" but NEVER a prompting of what might come in view. (No "Hey on your left coming up is where Jesse James hid from the authorities...") Really? No one ( except me) dressed for the occasion as they encourage on the website and not a single member of the team even came into the train car ot say hello. I paid about $96 dollars ( before taxes and fees) for a salad and main course and a dessert. Come on. Do better. Save your money. read more

This year we decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary with lunch on My Old Kentucky Dinner Train and we had a wonderful time! The decor of the train and the table settings are beautiful. When buying the tickets, one question asks if you are celebrating a special occasion and there was a nice Happy Anniversary card on the table when we arrived! There were 10 tables for 4 in the car where we were seated, but the couple who was to share our table were unable to come so we had the table to ourselves. Our server Haley was efficient and friendly and provided good service for us and the people around us. It's impressive how all of the servers can carry the big trays with four servings of food on the moving train and not spill or drop anything! The meals start with the Golden Spike salad, and one chooses the entree and dessert when buying the tickets. We both chose the pan seared halibut over risotto, with roasted fall vegetables (sweet potatoes, cauliflower, and carrots) and the meal was delicious. Hot dinner rolls with whipped butter are also served. Beverages included with the meal are water, sweet tea, unsweet tea, and coffee brewed with beans roasted especially for the dinner train. Drinks from a full bar are available for an extra cost, along with several appetizers. However, we found the food from the menu to be filling and did not desire any extras. As the train rolls down the track several attractions are pointed out along the way, including a safe house used by Jesse James, and a trestle that survived the Civil War because it carried bourbon for both the Union and Confederate soldiers! All in all, we enjoyed our trip and the food, and would consider returning for the experience. read more

Brought my kids on the North Pole version of the dinner train today. The salads were fine but I didn't like their signature dressing at all. They do have other options available by request. I had the chicken florentine entree. The chicken was a little tough but I really enjoyed the sauce- I would have liked more sauce, honestly. My kiddo had chicken tenders with carrots and mac&cheese. The carrots were very good kind of sweet and salty. The star was the chocolate mousse cake. Melt in your mouth yummy and not overpoweringly chocolatey. The service was good and the temperature on the train was comfortable. All in all this mediocre meal/experience was not worth the $260 (not including gratuity) for my family of 3. read more

First good news...ambiance is lovely ,service was great,drinks good. We did the murder mystery dinner. Bought Tix back in Nov for our anniversary....January brought an ice storm and blizzard and the ride was canceled we opted to reschedule for late March . We made it to Bardstown and missed the train due to a car wreck holding us up. I was gutted,first trip overnight off the farm in 6 years and was beyond our control.We emailed them immediately from the Red Rose Inn where we overnighted(highly recommend it's excellent!). A bazillion emails and phone calls late and a 20 percent rebooking fee later we did the red last night ($402 plus tip!) We sat with a couple also celebrating their anniversary who were from Bowling Green and very sweet .They randomly sat with us while we waited in the depot to board and we discovered we were sitting at same table! We boarded last...the ambiance is beautiful old Pullman style dining car.Salads and crackers and a cheese dip ball was sitting there waiting for us and water.Drink orders taken and served straight away .Your choice is sweet r unsweetened tea (or half cut like I do) or alcohol is additional.Food Order was confirmed and they easily subbed veg and starches .(mashed or fried potatoes)Also happy to sub desserts. We had mahi-mahi and prime rib.My husband could not eat his meal.It was awful.I choked down a very dry Mahi Mahi.Our seat mates also struggled ...one had Mahi Mahi the other the pork.Pork went largely uneaten as did the sides.Lindsay our serve was very sweet.We asked for extra rolls and she brought us some.They were warm and honestly the best part of the dinner.Dessert was another blow of shattered dreams and despair ,the lemon blueberry cake was dry ...crumbly ...old...the pecan pie was extra oozy and tastes of refrigerator the crust was dry and sandy. The scenery ...I saw a lot of slum lord places and trees.They had you a card with highlight to look for but nobody announced anything or gave any other information.I completely missed the trestle.We did see Jim Beam. The show...was very simple to solve and ended with a proposal which was sweet.It was fun and someone won the prize .Cast was bubbly and charismatic. Overall now investing 2 nights off the farm arranging help,2 tanks of gas,2 overnight stays in Bardstown and $402 plus tip...wouldn't do it again .Bardstown is cute with lots bourbon if that's your thing and lots of history which is interesting. We visited here last weekend on Saturday at 7 o'clock. We had a dinner. We had a murder mystery show and a train ride all in one. I got a prime rib, baked potato salad. It was good. It was not the best but it was good. waitress was really nice. The murder mystery show was interesting, we liked it. I didn't know what to expect. The ambience was cool. I like looking out the window seeing the sites. It was Strange staring at a person. This was fun! A group of us decided to try it and we're glad we did. It was a two hour trip, and only lacked a host to give background on what we were seeing. Something I thought was a "professional farm" turned out to be bourbon storage. Figured that out from a card I picked up afterwards. We were told to arrive at 5 for a 6 o'clock departure. Why? As near as I can figure they wanted you in the bar (at extra cost) and gift shop. Right at 6 we boarded. The servers worked hard, not only checking on your menu choice but serving drinks. I thought I would die of thirst before I got my glass of wine. While food was good, we laughed we paid $100 for a $30 dinner. And while salad and pimento cheese were served to everyone, one at our table didn't get hers and when we pointed it out the server said she would check on it and never got back to us. Turns out two was plenty for the 3 of us. Would I do this again? Probably not. But I'm glad I ticked it off the bucket list. And Bardstown is charming. More on that in another review. We went on a "lunch" train version of the dinner train. The sun was shining, the food was amazing and the service was beyond reproach. Meal service was chosen prior to boarding, but they do offer a cash bar for those who chose to partake. They even had a "tourist card" that explained the landmarks visible out the windows at the designated mile markers. I am was so impressed with this trip that I am planning to return for their "Murder Mystery Train by Murder and Merriment" trip. If the lunch was any indication of their professionalism, then the murder mystery would be a hoot! read more

The train ride was noisy and cold. My husband was seated under an air conditioning vent that was blowing ice cold air. We asked twice to get it turned to a warmer temperature. My husband's food was ice cold as well as his arms. We finally spoke to a manager who said they would refund his ticket. Have yet to receive refund. We so enjoyed our trip while visiting Kentucky for the UF vs UK game (Go Gators!). Not only was it a neat way to see some sights and the beautiful KY countryside, but the food was delicious and the servers worked hard to ensure our experience was good. The best part was that, as a WFPB eater, I was not wanting the Vegetarian option of cheese tortellini, and let them know in advance that I would prefer the veggie sides and potatoes from the other meat options available. I did not get that. Instead, I was delightfully surprised that they went above and beyond to make me a special dish of Spaghetti Squash in a sauce of capers, sun dried tomatoes, etc, that was not only delish, but even better than MY spaghetti squash (which I love and do very well)! The train ride was great until I tried walking to bathroom, not for people with balance issues. The liquor was flowing and so was the loud mouth people that didn't seem to be bothered about disturbing others experience. When four people are sitting together at a table, please be respectful and not talk through the whole time. We was trying to look at the scenery, but a woman wanted to talk to us. The Kentucky bourbon train is a very unique dining experience that lasts 2 1/2 hours as you travel through the Kentucky heartland while enjoying a nice dinner. The food was good - a nice salad, fresh bread, hearty entrees, and delicious dessert. The experience would have been better if the service was more attentive. Our server spent the majority of time with another table and unfortunately our table suffered the consequences of not getting drinks timely or at all. I did see other tables being serviced well and think it was just our server so I would probably do this again if the chance arose. read more

Hold on folks! My daughter booked a trip for Father's Day. I had no idea this train existed. All I can say is wow. What at treat. The train was cool and the ride was very nice. They had a host giving background and info on bourbon and the area. Overall service was fantastic. Now, you might find this hard to believe but the food was amazing! What is something one can do for their birthday/fun day out that is different? Ah, that's right. The Kentucky Dinner Train. This was such a treat. I really hasn't heard of this experience until finding it in my "Kentucky Bucket List" book. And when you're a Derby baby and just want to get the heck out of that craziness, heading down to Bardstown for this was just perfect. It is a splurge, but totally worth it. You can opt to come for lunch to save a few bucks. We got there early, and they have a bar you can relax at while you wait for the train to board. The train ride itself kind of goes in a straight line, but it's still fun. While you're not going to see anything completely out of the ordinary, it's still nice to look out into the countryside of Bardstown, and even into many people's backyards. You'll also go through some distilleries, too. The food was phenomenal. I was expecting just one plate....and I was dead wrong! We were given salads, beer cheese/vegetable plate (I think this was extra,) our main course and dessert. We got the shrimp and grits for lunch, and it was wonderful. And that apple dumpling for the end..perfection. I really can't think of anything bad to say. If you're only dining with one other person, chances are they will probably seat you with another couple. That didn't bother us, but just a heads up. A very 'Kentucky' experience that is worth checking out! read more

Really neat experience, worth doing at least once. Kinda has a fancy feel to it, so dress up a little. The atmosphere is nice to enjoy a meal and look at scenery as the train goes by. The food was ok, with large portions. I ordered the charcuterie board as well, which turned out to be too much food. I ended up with leftovers from both the charcuterie board and my meal. When you are paying this price for a meal, you expect it to be top-notch. My grandmother and I got the roasted "fall" vegetables, and they were barely edible. We picked through them and ate the the couple of sweet potato cubes, a couple of the small regular potatoes, and a few carrots. Our snow peas and portabella mushrooms were tough and rubbery. The mushrooms were soaked in so much vinegar, they made you pucker. They were just BAD! We left the train hungry and had to go some place else to eat. My niece got the pot roast, and she loved hers. It was tender, and she was very pleased. The train ride itself was fun, but you don't see much than normal countryside--just like you see from the roads. The train itself was the highlight of the trip for me. The staff was helpful and friendly. I just wish when we complained about our vegetables, they would have offered us a different meal choice. The waitress even accommodated me and tasted one of my mushrooms. She said she would tell the chef to lay off the vinegar for next time, but it didn't help us out at the time. Had a terrible experience with My Old Kentucky Dinner Train. I purchased 2 gift cards in November 2019 for $150.00 each to give to my adult children as Christmas gifts. Then in the spring of 2020 COVID struck and they closed. According to their website they closed permanently. It was sad that I lost $300, but not much I could do. Their website was closed, no-one answered the phones, no way to communicate with them at all. Then in September 2024 I found out they had re-opened. I contacted them immediately and they have a record of my gift certificates....but then went on to tell me that they would be expiring in the first week of November, only 6 weeks away! My kids have busy families and schedules and it's not possible for them to plan a trip in such short notice. I complained to My Old Kentucky Dinner Train and asked them to extend the deadline so my kids would have ample time to use the gift cards.....as of this writing, I've received no response. This is a terrible way to treat a customer. They have CHOSEN to let the gift card expire. They could extend the time if they wanted, but they apparently aren't interested. Went today for lunch service. It was nice. I wished they had more options for the salad course. Only one salad and it was sweet. Couldn't eat it. Personal preference, I dont care for fruit in my salad. That was the only option though. The main meal and dessert were amazing though. Two of us had the hot brown and the other pot roast. Apple dumpling, cheesecake, and chocolate cake. The problem we had was with service. She was nice when she was present. She forgot our dessert and we had to ask for it. She did apologize. Watching the server on the other side be so attentive, I was a bit jealous. We weren't offered coffee or refills. The view was nice at times. I think we would try it again and try the dinner service.
