Nonetheless, we had a very enjoyable meal and met a charming young lady by the name of Niki, who was our server this afternoon. She is the regular bartender on the weekends, and with her outgoing personality, I am sure she does well! Now to why y'all are reading this review: the food was seriously good. The fried pickles were like thin potato chips--nice and crispy. I had the seafood basket with fresh oysters, catfish, hushpuppies, and crawfish tails. My friend had the tilapia, and her French fries were nice and crispy, which she thoroughly enjoyed. It was a good afternoon to be had by all. Give them a try--you'll be glad you did. Be sure to ask for NIKI. Peace!

It kind of has a warehouse feel to it. I'm surprised they don't open the place up on weekend nights for a western themed bar or something. I've seen the same workers in this joint for over a decade, so I'd think it's family owned. They stay busy, so it must be popular. Today, Momma wanted barbecue, and the places closer to home don't offer indoor dining. Since we were dressed up for Mother's Day, we drove out of the way to come here. I expected a good time. Straight off the Road has always had good vibes, and nothing there has changed. Country music when you come in the door, good service, and authentic feeling decorations. It just feels like home in here-- Texas without all the pretentiousness of fancier places. I was surprised to see the parking lot and the restaurant only half full on Mother's Day, but looking back, I should have known then that something wasn't quite right. Everything went well until I got my plate. I ordered the two meat brisket and sausage, potato salad, and fried okra. The portion was huge-- enough for three people -- but I couldn't enjoy it. The brisket should have been the star, but it tasted like was baked too long in an oven an oven a day or two ago. There was no smoke flavor, and the meat just fell apart. I could have eaten it with a spoon. It was tender, sure, but anybody can do that if you cook it/rest it long enough. The flavor just wasn't there. I'm not sure whether they make their sausage or get it from somewhere outside, but it seemed to be quality stuff before they cooked it. It was coarse ground like I like it with good seasoning. But where was the smoke? The sausage honestly looked and tasted like it was sliced and boiled. I was shocked. The potato salad tasted good, but the texture was all wrong. Everything was chopped up small like it was done in the food processor and there was no love in it. Fried okra is hard to get wrong, but there was nothing particularly right about it either. I was so suspicious about the lack of flavor in my meat that I drove around the back parking lot when we left. There were several racks of neatly stacked firewood, but it was all filled up to the top. Either it had just been delivered, or it's not getting used. I suspect the latter. This is Texas. If you're gonna keep the doors open at a barbecue joint, you have to do better. I love coming to your restaurant, and I hope you get things figured out.

Ordered a 3 piece hot tender basket with fries and white queso Mac and cheese. Now, we're Mexican and can handle some spice but biting into that first tender I just got hit with straight chile powder, no hint of salt or other seasonings. Only ate one tender left the other two alone. Fries were cold, but thankfully the food runner was able to bring us a fresh batch of fries. Queso Mac was ok, didn't love it. The staff seems to need a little more training. When we walked in someone came up to the register who had been waiting for 30 minutes for food. Took the staff a bit to figure out the order. There were only 4 other tables occupied at the time and a number was given to us by the cashier. Shortly after we sat down, the cashier was walking around with two trays of food asking each table if that's what they ordered. Everyone said no, so she walked around asking each table what they ordered. I thought that was the purpose of the assigned numbers, maybe my understanding is wrong. Unfortunately don't think we will be back for a third time.

The wait staff were friendly and the food was made to order. The fried fish was hot, crispy exterior and soft inside. Some of best I have had. The shrimp was large, expertly fried with a light batter. I was expecting a little more seasoning on the shrimp (maybe that's why they had 4 different bottles of hot sauce on the table!) We also tried the shrimp gumbo. While it was tasty it was not very "Cajun." Maybe that's my Louisiana snobbishness. Another key point that must be noted is their large selection of grilled fish and seafood. If you want a change from deep fried seafood I'm confident this place would be a great option. We will return soon to explore other items.
