This truck occasionally comes to my work for lunch. I missed them the last time they were here but when I saw they were coming today I thought it was the perfect opportunity to check it out!! What I ended up with was a lackluster experience. My friend and I decided to split something because I also wanted to try their cobbler. She orders the meatloaf only to be told it isn't ready and will be a 20 minute wait. So, she ended up ordering the baked chicken and rice. I ordered a side of mac and cheese and some cobbler. The guy says they didn't make cobbler today. The cobbler was the main thing I wanted from this truck. The mac and cheese is ok, not creamy or cheesy, very peppery, a bit oily. I just feel kinda like it's missing something that would make it taste really good. It's like they decided it's a side, so why try. I ended up throwing half of it out because it was just too greasy for me :( You get a piece of cornbread complimentary with your order. I opened up the foil it was wrapped in and it was hard and crumbly. I don't often eat cornbread so I asked my friend if it's supposed to be dry. She said noooo, I'll take her word for it. She said the chicken she got was really good, but the rice was very salty. I don't know, when I hear a business is going to do some homestyle food, I expect it to taste homestyle. They aren't doing their granny justice, that much I know. I just feel like this is food you should really care about and this food felt like an afterthought entirely. read more

You can always add salt, but you can never take it away. I really, realy wanted to love this food. I like supporting local businesses, especially food trucks. Unfortunately, the pork chop was so salty, it ruined the flavor of everything else. The green beans were canned with no kick of flavor added, the mac and cheese was plain, and the corn bread was very dry. My co-worker said the meatloaf was okay, but also very salty. They didn't have a vegan options today (sad face from the girl in front of me in line), nor did they have the sweet tea I was looking forward to. I could be picky and say the meatloaf is a little dense and could use more sauce, and the accompanying square of cornbread is underseasoned. For a quick lunch food truck, so so good! I ordered the beef tips with a side of green beans. It came out so fast, so bonus points for that! The beef tips were super tender and perfectly seasoned and so comforting on this cold January day. The rice was also perfect. I got the seasoned rice by special request (it's usually served on white) and it's a stand alone. It was a bit of a shame to put beef sauce on it. The green beans were also good but better with Louisiana Hot Sauce on it -which they have outside the trailer. I'll be watching for them from now on. read more

Mac N' Cheese - not the typical Mac. The cheese is not cheddar but it's still pretty good. I nice change. Greens - good but be warned that they aren't seasoned. It does allow the customer the ability to add salt, pepper and hot sauce if you choose. I couldn't eat without adding "extras" so if I were to eat onsite, I'd choose another side dish. Beef tips - perfect just as they are. Chicken and waffles - Driving to drive home with the awesome aroma of delicious nuggets covered in syrup may prove to be a challenge. This dish is perfect as served. Baked chicken - this dish is pretty good and plentiful. The white meat is juicy. I opted to add just a tad of Tony C. I really wanted to like this. The Domain is doing a trail run for a food truck park and I was lucky that I didn't have to drive all the way to 12th street to try it. I read the reviews before deciding to go so I knew exactly what I wanted to order. The beef tips and rice seem to be a hit. The owner was there and even told me it was a good choice. I also ordered mac & cheese, cabbage, and greens. I was highly disappointed. The only thing I ate was the cabbage and half of the mac & cheese. Gave the rest to my brother and law, he even agree it wasn't good. The rice seemed under cooked, the beef tips was decent, mac & cheese was good but too much butter/oil, the greens were salty, corn bread was dry, and I enjoy the cabbage (no complaints there). Unfortunately, this will not be a place that I give a second chance. read more

The food was good but the customer service was horrible....even for a food truck. They were at the Juneteerh Celebratoon. It took over 20 minutes to order food (not because the lines were long but they didn't open for at least an hour after they said they would open). I stayed in line because folks kept telling me how "wonderful" the food was. After I ordered, it took nearly an hour to get my food. I ordered the Chicken & Waffles and it takes nearly an hour?? They kept saying the waffles were cooking, but the waffle machine waffle machine was broken or something. When I asked if II could substitute the waffles for another side, all they said was "the waffles are coming." Nearly can hour later, and the waffles were just average. No apology or anything for the extreme delay. I won't be going be going back. I consider customer service just as important as the taste and quality of the food.) Beautiful Saturday. Craving chicken and waffles, but Yelp says they don't open until 1pm, so we wait all day and get there at 1:05. Had called the night before but no answer. Disappointment #1: their sign says they actually open at noon. Ok fine, so they updated their hours and Yelpers haven't changed it. Not their fault I guess #2, the cook says they're not ready and actually won't open for another 30 minutes (90 minutes late based on their sign, which is in front of us)- whaaat? They're open "whenever" then #3, they no longer have chicken and waffles! Don't sell them. Not on the menu. You have been warned! :( So sad we of course won't come back. Spotted the Granny truck on Congress Ave today, and tried it for lunch. Ordered the chicken and dumplings. I am from Texas, and have some ideas about what chicken and dumplings should taste like - this was just OK. Too much dumpling and not enough chicken. Was a bit thin, and needed more seasoning or substance besides the thick dough pieces. Left most of it in the box. Too much dough. The potato salad was nice and cold, but too salty. After a few bites, did not want to eat any more. The black eyed peas were OK. I think they make them vegetarian to allow a diverse group to order them - But without a ham hock in the pot, they are rather plain. They added some cayenne or other spice to it which made it inedible for me (food sensitivity.) After a few bites, could not eat any more. The price was reasonable, and the staff was nice at the van. I love a good southern food truck and Granny's did not disappoint! I had the chicken and dumplings with a side of Mac and cheese. They also threw in some cornbread. The chicken and dumplings were so flavorful. I had my fill of the dumplings soon but couldn't get enough of the chicken. The Mac and cheese was wonderful and swimming in cheesiness. Adorable little soul food truck! I had it for the first time today and I asked the lady working the truck for a suggestion. She recommended the chicken and dumplings saying "well when's the last time you had chicken and dumplings honey" (add the perfect southern drawl). She was right, I hadn't had chicken and dumplings anywhere outside of a can in years. Now it may have been my nostalgia, or the fact that the food was in fact fantastic but the chicken and dumplings was done right. Perfectly seasoned, cooked just enough and warm - delicious! I got the Mac and cheese as my side and I am a Big Mac and cheese eater - this did not disappoint. It was peppered and savory. Good serving size, appropriately priced and sweet staff. Dining on Rainey is a dying experience, with all of the high rises going up, the bars being constricted with increasingly limited parking, and well... not much room to expand, at the most basic level. The veggie options span the Southern Kingdom, with black-eyed peas and mac and cheese standing in as the faux-veggies... well-accustomed favorites to the meat-and-threes found in places called "My Granny's Ktichen." Among my favorites were the collards and the sweet potatoes, often called yams in the Southern circle. Etymologically speaking, there is no difference. The greens boasted all of the soggy texture and tart bite desired, while the mushy sweets screamed of brown sugar. MGK does not boast anything particularly special about its menu or presentation, but sometimes humble, greasy, sweet, salty food is the best food to eat when your ego is in the clouds after a few too many drinks. read more

This fabulous food truck is parked at a new spot in South Austin called The Thicket between William Cannon and Ditmar. I've heard that you have to have the chicken and waffles so I did and it was awesome! Breading on the chicken is amazing and the waffles are the perfect texture to go with it. Generous portions but I managed to scarfed it all up! We also ordered the beef tips with seasoned rice, also cleaned the plate. I haven't tried the chicken and dumplings yet, for 2 reasons: 1. I can't get away from the meatloaf! :) 2. I suspect the dumplings are "incorrect." Meaning, I think they're the strip-dumplings, which are essentially big noodles. True southern dumplings are drop-dumplings, the puffy, doughy kind. Now, I'm only going off the pictures; I haven't seen them for myself. But if they are strip-dumplings, I'll be disappointed -- and I don't want to be disappointed by anything from this great truck! read more

I came here as part of Truck by Truck West and got to try chicken and waffles as well as fried mac and cheese. The chicken was tasty but the waffle was kind of soggy however I came 15 minutes before closing so that might be the problem. That being said, I'm surprised they close at 10pm on a Friday night. Surely business would be booming right around 2:10am. Anyway, the fried mac and cheese was really great. That dish is a little too bready for me to want to ever order it somewhere but I was happy to try it, it's the best iteration of that dish I've ever had and I would happily steal one from my neighbor's plate some time in the future. If you find yourself in the Rainey St trailer park, this is probably the best place to get a meal. Plus, the proprietor is a great personality and worth the price of admission. read more

This fantastic little trailer was at a small shop event we went to one evening. That was all it took for me - I'm a fan! I'm not a foodie that normally seeks out chicken & waffles (in fact it's usually the opposite since I don't prefer sugary dinners) but it sounded and smelled sooo good that night. I was not disappointed - it was FANTASTIC! The medium-sized seasoned chicken tenders (not strips, not nuggets, right in between) were perfectly matched with a not-too-heavy maple syrup and two waffle triangles - dense enough but not too cake-like. I would have taken a picture to post, but it didn't last long enough. I ate WAY too much of it, whined about how full I was for the next two hours, and probably raved about it annoyingly until the next day. The two employees (owners?) were nice and attempted to fill the orders quickly as there was a small rush of hungry people. But mostly the food...the food was IT. If you've got amazing food and good service, you're a yes in my book. I would definitely eat the chicken and waffles again - should probably try something else too... read more

It was a Thursday night when I decided to hit up the Rainey Street food trailer park, and man was I hungry and so was my hubby. After scouring the park for the perfect place for a late night eat, I spotted My Granny's Kitchen. There was one woman working the trailer (I'm guessing it was Granny herself) and she was on her game. She took the order and made the entire meal ( I was impressed). Now for the food. Let's just say it was delicious. We had the Chicken & Waffles along with some fried Mac 'n' Cheese. Yummy! The flavor of the Mac had a southern flair, so don't expect boxed Kraft crap from Granny's. I gave Granny's 4 stars because the mac 'n cheese was a bit on the dry side and could have used some type of sauce served on the side. But everything else was great! read more

These guys just started coming to my work. I'm debating really hard on whether or not to give them three or four stars.... I had the chicken and dumplings with green and mac n cheese. It comes with yummy cornbread! The mac and cheese was AMAZING. Loved it. The greens were really good too. I wasn't sure what to expect of them as I've never had them before but they were peppery and soft without being mushy and I would definitely eat them again. 5/5 stars Here's were my issues come in. I wasn't expecting the texture of the dumplings but it was really well seasoned and it was tasty. I got over it and ate it anyway. Still a 4/5 stars The peach cobbler I was really looking forward to. Cobbler is usually fruit with a bread or crumble topping. They served me a bowl that looked like soup with mushy pie crust at the bottom. *tears* The peaches themselves were delicious, soft and cinnamony and not over cooked. It was literally a crime that they were drowned in sauce and the crust was so unappetizing after being soaked. No mush for me please. 2/5 (if the peaches weren't so good I'd have said 1/5 stars) Overall, I recommend them for their food but seriously, just skip dessert and have it somewhere else. You'll be happier. As for me? I'm hoping they will start serving their chicken and waffles during the week cause I really want some! It looks really good :) read more

Went out for lunch today with no plan in mind, but boy did I get lucky finding this truck parked a couple blocks away. Stony's was also holed up in the same spot, but one look at the menu said I had to sample this new Southern fare. There was a decent line too - always a good sign. You get a great vibe from this place right away. The truck has a bright, appealing look, and the staff seem very friendly and get the orders out fast. Wasn't sure what to order, so I asked the woman at the register for her recommendation, and she pointed me toward the chicken and dumplings. Well, don't mind if I do. Holy mother of god, this dish was absolutely delicious. I love a well-made chicken and dumplings but haven't found many places that even offer it. But here, they get it darn near perfect and I fell for it in about 30 seconds. The chicken was fall-off-the-bone tender (but thankfully, no bones to be found). The dumplings had excellent consistency - not the best I've had but more than tasty enough. And the soup/sauce was straight-up awesome, with a great herb flavor (with some bay leaves thrown in for good measure) that tied the whole dish together perfectly. I'm a sucker for black-eyed peas so I got that as a side. They were well seasoned and a great addition. They also throw in a piece of cornbread, which is crumbly and sweet, but not overly so. Man, what a heavenly meal to interrupt a dull workday. IMO, Austin is a little short on good Southern cuisine. Hoover's aside, I haven't found much to write home about. So if you love comfort food, and love it you should, then this place is a must-try. The portions are huge and well-priced, only $9 for my giant entree and side. This truck comes to the office building at the arboretum every other week during lunchtime. I usually get the beef tips on rice with green beans and greens. So delicious! The beef is tender soaked in savory gravy. The greens are cooked with turkey bits and give them a great flavor, not bitter at all. They even have Louisiana hot sauce and hot pepper sauce if you want that extra spice and I recommend it! They offer more than the typical trailer food fare (I am so. over. mexasian. fusion.) and really do offer entrees and sides my granny used to make. The baked chicken is good, but my favorite is the chicken and dumplings. It's especially delicious when she comes on a rainy day! They offer a variety of sides including green beans, greens, mac and cheese, and sweet potatoes. I really like the collards, especially with the added hot sauce. It's $11 for an entree and two sides, but the portions are HUGE, I usually get two meals out of it. Me and my friend just moved down the street and finally decided to go to the food truck park and came across this beauty. Granny was so polite and all smiles and she was prompt in taking our order. We both got the smothered pork chops and rice with Mac n cheese and a sweet tea. MY GOODNESS, those pork chops were so tender and the gravy was nice and spicy but not too "hot." The mac n cheese, though...WAS AMAZING. Literally the best Mac I had ever had and it was piping hot and freshly made. Super creamy with the perfect amount of cheesy-ness. And finally, the sweet tea. Pork Chop was tender and slow cooked in a flavorful thin gravy and the black eyed peas were piping hot and satisfying. The Sweet Potatoes were sweet and buttery and very soft and dessertlike.
