TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! ZERO STARS!!!!I made an appointment with My African Heritage because the original appointment that I had set with my regular braided fell through. The appointment was for my four year old daughter. Normally I read a company's reviews before I settle on a service. However, being that I was pressed for time I opted to google braid shops near my home. Deciding to book an appointment with this shop without having done the research was an EPIC FAIL! The price that was quoted over the phone for simple french braids seemed a bit high ($45) as I had grown accustomed to paying $35 with my regular braided. None-thee-less I agreed to the terms as I was told that the price would depend on the style more or less. I arrived at my scheduled time and when I walked in there was a lady there braiding another women's hair. I WAS NOT acknowledged nor greeted. The next best thing was to ask for Fatima, who was the lady that was the braided scheduled for the appointment who just so happened to be directly behind me as I'm coming into the shop. She too did not introduce herself properly and was very rigid and drab. She rushed in before me and nonchalantly waved me over to the chair to get started. At that point it was only right to settle the pricing before she started the job. The photo that was saved to my phone of the style that was desired was shown to Fatima at which point she told me that the other women (i'm assuming the owner) that was there braiding had to price the style. At that time she was on the phone so I waited patiently for her to get the numbers cleared. When the picture was shown to her, she immediately said "NO! We can't do that." I told her that I would be willing to pay whatever the price was for it. She told me that the price doesn't matter, that I couldn't have the style done. (which was a bob style with no intricate or fancy designs). In an attempt to negotiate the size of the braids (suggesting the same style with larger braids) I was told that they could not accommodate the style but that they would do two ponytails instead. An entirely different style that I was not interested in for $65!!! I suggested that it was expensive for a kid and further for the style. The "owner" had a nasty attitude, was very RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL and ABRUPT. She did not want to hear what I had to say and she talked over me the entire time. She told me that she had been in business 20 years and that I did not have to have my daughters hair braided there. She turned my wanted a certain hair style for my daughter into an ARGUMENT and I have a hard time debating something that I am spending money on. I thanked her for her time and LEFT. I did not appreciate the treatment that I received going to this shop and would not recommend patronizing a business who treats potential customers in such a demeaning manner. I told a friend about what happened and she told me that she had a similar experience there not long ago. So there you have it, seems like a common business practice to me. You have been warned. I have heard so much about how good African Heritage was but I wouldn't know now. I scheduled an appointment on August 22nd with Dorris to have my hair braided. She told me I could come in on September the 8th at 12:30 pm & to please text her a picture of the style I wanted. I did just so but never received a response from her. Today August 7th I called to confirm my appointment & find out how much it would be for my appointment tomorrow August 8th. She had no clue who I was. My thing is if she didn't want to braid my hair she should have said so. I cannot find anyone to braid my hair in one day. This was so messed up. On top of that she was very rude about it and didn't seem to care. She lost out on a good customer. Can anyone recommend a good braider in the Bay Area? read more

I have been a customer here for awhile. i LOVE their work, it never fails whenever I leave out I am a walking billboard for a period of time and I have no problem sharing where I got my hair done! I usually go to Hawa and am always satisfied although EVERYONE in the shop can do hair!! I like to change up my hair so I have pretty much got almost everything, whether it's braids (micros), full sew in or partial( a couple of tracks). I would definitely recommend this beauty shop, it may be a little bit of a drive but well WORTH it!! read more

Excellent braiders. Poor customer service. I've been here a few times and the reason I give them my service is because their braiding talent is impeccable. However, they are very unprofessional and downright rude. Whenever I tell them specifically what to they just tell me "it won't look right" and do what they want to do anyway. The last straw for me was when I told them not to use a lot of hair because it was pulling my edges. The braider said okay okay, but she still used the normal amount of hair and did not listen to me. Afterward, I told her I wasn't satisfied and what could she do about it. She demanded to be paid in full or she would call the cops on me because she had my license plate number. If you're into good service for the expensive price you pay for your braids this place isn't for you. read more

I like my African heritage I've been going there for a long while.I have learned in my time there that if you want your hair done right,ask for Doris.She will always make sure your hair is tight and it will not fall out.I sadly can't say the same for the other girls although they are all perfectly lovely women,they don't seem to take pride in their work like Doris.They are VERY affordable,but their business is like a family business,even if you make an appointment for a certain time they are very laid back in getting to you sometimes all the women all working on a client.All in all I give them 4 stars cause if Doris wasn't there I wouldn't be either. read more

First let me start by saying I feel bad about the review I'm about to leave because I enjoyed Doris' company the entire time I was in her shop. She is truly a pleasure to be around however I wish I had of known then what I know now about the sew in I had her do. I have seen braids she has done before & they are fantastic, but sew ins may not be her thing. I originally wanted a part but she convinced me that I should get it all sewn in to let me edges rest because they were thinning some. I agreed about my edges but was still somewhat skeptical about not having a part but she promised I would like it because "I'll make it look like it's growing right out your head & offer a money back guarantee if you don't like it because I know you will like it. Plus it's curly hair & naturaly curly hair never has a defined part anyway". The shop was kind of dim so it wasn't until I got home that I had a good look at my hair. The track going across the front of my head was showing & looked like I had a head band on. Plus I had a big hump on top of my head. I got my sew in done Friday & called her on Monday to tell her I was unhappy. She told me to come in & she would fix it. When I got there she tried to make it seem as though I didn't know how to take care of my sew in & it was my fault the track was showing. Anyway, she pulled some hair out & covered the track in the front so I figured I could deal with it now although I still wasn't completely satisfied. So here I am typing this review 2 weeks later because my sew in has gone from bad to worse in a mere 2 weeks. My braids and strings are all extremely loose & several of my tracks are hanging off the braids because the strings have either gotten loose or come out all together. And on top of all that, I have to bobbie pin the end of a loose braid at the top of my head. (But the braid does make me chuckle a bit when I look in the mirror...LOL). But like I said in the beginning, I really like Doris but her sew in...NOT SO MUCH!!! read more

If I could give it 0 stars I would. I had a 10:00 appt, I arrived 20 mins before. Two braiders already had customers in their chairs. One finished and asked me what kind of style I wanted... It was irrelevant because she grabbed her purse and said she'd be back later. So, the lady who is left is the one supposed to be doing my hair.... She's taking her sweet little time! The phone rings, and a customer walks in to make an appt, and I got up and walked out. It was 10:30 and she was no where near starting my hair... Then when I was walking to the door, she had the nerve to ask me why was I leaving... REALLY?!!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS? VERY UNPROFESSIONAL!!! Doris is the best - she's braided my and my daughters' hair for the past fifteen years. She is professional, skilled and FAST which is very important to me. During the past several years due to an inherited condition, my hair has thinned considerably on top. Doris always styles my hair so that my issue isn't obvious (individuals, twists, afro style weaves,etc.) I always receive compliments on my braids and sing her praises to one and all. I will never patronize this business ever again. I went there to get my hair done at 5:30 pm because the person who was suppose to do my hair faked. They agreed to do my hair right then even that late. said they will be done by 9:00 pm and they did, two people on my hair. 2 day later one of my braids came undone. three day later braids start coming out at the root and all the braids start getting frizzy and coming undone. when I really looked in the mirror at the back the braids in the front were a lot smaller the the back braids. in a week in a half my hair looked like i had my hair up for two months. So I went back to her and she looked at my hair and said oh yeah i see, I'm sorry I don't know what happen. no problem I will fix it for but I'm going out of town Tuesday my daughter can do it for you she will go through each braid and fix it but not today. so I called the next day to make appointment which I made for Tuesday at 3.00 pm. I was a little late about 3:15 or so, and the shop was closed. I got in touch with her mother and she call her and then called me back and said she will be back she ran to the store. it was about 4:30 when i was able to return she went through my hair and if MAX 30 braids if that and called her self done. I said this don't look no different I want my money back or my hair redone. she said i need to wait until the owner get back( her mother) so I called her money while she was out of town and got in to a verbal argument texting each other. she refuse to give me my money back. she wanted to just redo my hair but by then I was irritated and didn't want them to do my hair at all. she refused to refund my money. She said why is your hair still braiding as if I was going to take it down before I showed her the mess she made and didn't fix right the second time. I went there with my fiance and she accused me of sicking him on her and called the police. nothing happen police just told me I should sue her in civil court. So I am. read more
