    Manjar Blanco Flan

Maybe we're not fair judges - having eaten mostly of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine in our lifetimes - but Mutuo was wonderful surprise that went beyond expectations! At first we were concerned with a restaurant located inside of a Sheraton, but the ambience of Mutuo's little area inside the lobby is chic, super hip, and very private. The food is Puerto Rican/Japanese/Peruvian fusion (any two of which is wonderful, but all three?!?!?) and every bite was fantastic. We started with the entirely vegan pisco sour made with aquafaba instead of egg white. More subtle and fragrant than your typical Pisco sour, with hints of ginger, gentler than normal with a delayed but powerful punch. We then started with the pork dumplings - a total winner, combining flavors of soy sauce, smoke, and minced onion with big bites Puerto Rican pulled pork. Sweet, smokey, and salty all at once. We followed with flank steak "anticucho." a Peruvian staple that's usually made with beef heart, but instead made here with strips of tender flank steak paired with classic Peruvian flavors of aji and crema. Delicious, soft but well charred, beautiful presentation. We took a break with a salad laced with aguacante and seaweed, paired with a soy-based vinaigrette. Then finished with a big plate of ceviche - perfect fillets of whitefish, rings of calamari, coins of mussels, oversize shrimp, all with the classic accompaniments of red onion, sweet potato, and cancha (Peruvian, crunchy corn). On this one, the Japanese-altered leche de tigre was too sweet for our taste - we missed the acid and salt of punch traditional ceviche. Luckily the server had a bowl of aji rocotto standard ding by for a kick. But as a plate of raw fish, it was impressive and plentiful. We finished with a manjar blanco flan - a showstopper. Smooth, ultra sweet, with caramel syrup and bites of Italian meringue. Among the best we've had, especially if you're a sugar addict. Server Hira was warm, knowledgeable, and super smart about food - absolutely steered us in the right direction and gave us a wonderful attentive service. Congratulations to the entire staff of Mutua for putting on such a great culinary show.

I have to give a 5 stars to Mutuo. Native puertorrican here that comes often for work and uses the Sheraton often. Mutuo was a great place enjoy a nice glass of Sauvignon Blanc, a delicious and hearty appetizer (pumpkin/ ginger soup) followed by a deliciously fresh sushi. But what honestly blew me away more than the food was the service. In an industry that is slowly losing the importance of Customer Service and Hospitality, I was provided an enjoyable experience by both my server and the hostess. Highly recommend!

We were the first and only ones at noon after a morning on the beach on a beautiful Friday. Our waitress was sweet and funny and everything came out quickly. I enjoyed my coconut mojito, super refreshing, not too sweet. My friend wasn't crazy about her passionfruit mojito so she ordered el cocotazo coctel and continued to order two more because she was in love. Now to the surprise guest: the food. We honestly only ordered because we were drinking an exorbitant amount of alcohol and needed carbs but boy were we glad we did. The stuffed green plantain was crispy but still soft on the inside, the pork inside was delicious. The fried cheese with guava sauce was interesting, almost reminded me of tofu but we could not stop eating it. The crab wontons were the star of the show in my opinion. Fried pockets were jam packed with a crab salad, topped with creamy guac and sweet eel sauce and I could probably eat 20 in one sitting. I also ordered a mofongo with shrimp in garlic sauce, the texture of the mofongo was soft and creamy unlike most places ive had, which I loved, but the garlic sauce was wayy too salty. That's where they lost a star, but I would definitely make sure to make a stop here the next time im in Puerto Rico

PHENOMENAL This is…read morenot just a restaurant, this is a dining experience. This is upscale elegance in a relaxed environment. This is global techniques blended with locally sourced Puerto Rican ingredients. From the moment you walk in, you feel welcome. I was there to celebrate my birthday (a reservation is a must). I asked if I could be seated in a different section of the restaurant, and even though they were packed, they said absolutely and found me a lovely seat in the bar area. The staff is knowledgeable and attentive. I suffer from severe food allergies but wanted to experience their tasting menu. My server spoke to the chef directly and then took the time to walk me through every option. I TRULY appreciated that they did not take anything off the menu but rather told me how they could adjust for my allergies. That is very rare and so very much appreciated that they went that extra mile for me. I highly recommend the tasting menu. It's 5 courses and they give you 3 options to choose from, within each course. And for the price ($85), a great value. Everything was delicious but I highly recommend the Breadfruit Gnocchi, Rainbow Runner Crudo, and Criollo Duck Mofongo. Chefs kiss! What I also noticed was, even though they were insanely busy, they didn't make you feel rushed. The invited you to savor the experience - which I did. Next time you are in San Juan, make a reservation and go. You won't be disappointed!

4.5 stars. Cocina Abierta was one of the better meals of our trip. The food was excellent overall,…read morewith the lone exception being the empanadas, which were simply too salty. Everything else was very well done. The two of us split one order of the five-course tasting menu plus an additional starter, and it ended up being a nice light meal. Had we each ordered our own tasting menu, it would have been far more food than we wanted...something we found to be a fairly common theme with portion sizes throughout Puerto Rico. The standout of the evening was the Criollo Duck Mofongo, which was absolutely exquisite and easily the best mofongo we had on our trip by far. The cocktails were tasty and unique, but a bit small for the price. This definitely isn't an every-night kind of restaurant...the prices are on the higher side. But if you're looking to splurge a little, it's a fun place to do it.
