It was a great place while it was open. However it was closed during covid as the owner retired and had already sold the building.

My favorite music store, period. Prices are as good or better than you'll find at any discount superstore, but with much better and more knowledgeable service. Used prices are very reasonable. Tim carries several excellent makes you won't find at the big box stores, too; I bought my G&L ASAT Special, my Vintage V52, and two Loars from him, as well as several used amplifiers and guitars. While I do a lot of my own setups and repairs, if a job is beyond me I take it to Tim. He's made new nuts for my guitars, fitted mandolin bridges, and repaired amplifiers for me. There's no one I trust more in the area to work on my gear. read more

A very tiny bright purple building off of woodward. All though this place is small, it is so much better than the hell of corporate guitar center. These dudes are stellar at what they do. I believe the main 2 guys that work have been there for years. They have done repairs for me many times. Whenever I have a question about equipment-anything silly or serious they answer it kindly. They have even went to far as to fix something small for free. They also have great deals on rentals of equipment. I have a vintage amp from the 60's that I wanted to sell if the price was right...they were so honest they told me I should hang onto it beause it is most definately worth more then what any place would offer. read more

Tim has been running Music Castle since I was a wee little Detroiter back in the 80s. He's top notch for repairs and they have one of the better rental programs going for beginners to gigging musicians that need an amp in a pinch. It's refreshing to know there are still non corporate shops for folks to go to other than the evil mother ship GC. Treasures like this cave of musical goodness need to be appreciated as they're responsible for the next generation of players getting a leg up...And that's a damn fine thing indeed! read more

Knowledge, but at a price. Tim knows a lot about his craft. He lets people know that he knows a lot. It's important to support local stores as a consumer. But as a business owner, it's important to treat customers with respect. I really wish that I had a more positive review, because it's truly a gem of a store on Woodward. Unfortunately, I've had bad experiences every time I've stopped in. Maybe Tim will hang up his pejoratives and mercurial attitude in exchange for a warmer demeanor. I've always loved this place, awesome selection, friendly dudes that know their stuff, not overpriced and they really take care of their customers. They helped me out in a pinch when I needed a specific guitar, quickly at a good price. I won't waste your time with a long review just to get to my point, so here it is. Yes, I had good experiences there for a while before this one. But one of the repair guys broke a part on my guitar and attempted to charge me a lot of money to fix it. I work on my guitars all the time and I know what was and was not functional before I brought it in. Additionally, it's a static part, there's no way it would just break by itself. This isn't sour grapes on my part, I just thought people should know. Most kids who take their guitars in there probably don't know any better. read more

I brought my cheap Korean Fender Strat. to Music Castle for a setup. When Tim was finished with it, it played smoother and better than any of my American or Japanese stratocasters. The difference was unbelievable. I was told he has over 30 years of experience and his expertise proved it to me. Tim at the Music Castle does great work. He has brought my guitars up to the highest quality. His scope of knowledge about guitars is vast. He always has a great solution for any problem. In less than one week, he fixed my Tele (new neck, fixed electronics, fixed the bridge - the best it's ever been.) and fixed the electronics on my Strat in two days.
