We found this gem completely serendipitously. We were going to Traverse City, and didn't want to…read morestay in town because of high traffic due to the cherry festival. It was getting dark, this place pulled up on our GPS, and we called hesitantly. Linda could NOT have been nicer. She does not stay on-premise for the night, but we called pretty late, and she drove over and met us right away. No one else was staying at the house, so we had the whole place to ourselves. I believe they are sometimes known as a curio shop, when you do a Google search on them. I don't think this is a fair or accurate description. Each piece in this house (and there were a LOT of them) seemed to have a story and a connection to the owners, whether it was something sentimental, like a family photo, or a trinket that was from a friend or previous patron. There was an organized and well-cared for air to everything as well, rather than the antique-shop feel you usually get from places that hold this much intrigue. The bedrooms themselves were amazing, and each one had a theme. We chose the Satin & Lace room, but one room that was especially touching and soothing was the Zada & Serene's room, done in lovely blue and dedicated to the owners' grandmothers. There were even pictures of them, as well as other remembrances. The guest book is also in this bedroom, and looking through it, you really get a feel for how lovely the hostess is. There is also a jacuzzi suite, and we were told that a couple was going to be staying there the night after for their honeymoon. Linda comes over in the morning, and whips up a FANTASTIC breakfast, made to order (from the night before). She is a warm and wonderful person. When I left my jeans there upon departure, she went through a lot of trouble (scouring through the guest book to find us) to find our address to mail it back to us, on their tab. It came with a lovely card, thanking us for the visit. Prices were amazingly reasonable (around $60/night about a year or two ago)...if you think of the money you'd spend on a quality breakfast elsewhere, the stay practically pays for itself. The house on the outside is also lovely, with a sliding rocker on the deck by the back of the house. Great alternative to staying in the standard, run of the mill places in Traverse City. It is a bit out of the way, but well worth it, for at least a night.

He booked us one of the regular rooms and we had a FANTASTIC time. The home is older and in great shape, it's full of an impressive collection of antiques, collectibles and Linda's family memorabilia. It's really a treasure to be inside what Linda and her husband call her "dollhouse" because it's so full of character. She put so much love into her B&B that you truly are in a place that she poured her heart into. The place is very clean, well-kept and comfortable. Linda made us an INCREDIBLE breakfast. Pumpkin pancakes, homemade, with sausage links, scrambled eggs and a fresh fruit bowl with pomegranate seeds! Plus coffee, water and orange juice. We had such a lovely time. Our ONLY issue is our own fault - we're overweight and had a hard time fitting both our "husky" butts in the full-size bed in our room. So, if you're of the "husky" variety, ask for their premium room with the king size bed and a JACUZZI! For less than $100/night WITH HOMEMADE BREAKFAST it's a GEM! Such a great experience, we will call again and highly recommend!

First, let me give the positive about this establishment. The location with respect to Sleeping…read moreBear Dunes is just about perfect. But, unfortunately, that's about where it ends. The place is not really family friendly. It is a shrine to lesbians which, in any other respect, is fine, but I'm just looking for a place to sleep. I'm not looking for some sexual enlightenment in an overnight stay. There is a "community" area where there is a shared refrigerator, stove, games, books, and such. It is nice enough, but it isn't appropriate for the "community". The books there are pretty graphic, including information on fisting. Again, I don't care where you put your fist, but it isn't something I need to explain to my three and six year old. But, the worst part of the stay was the bedding. It hadn't been cleaned from the people who stayed there last. The sheets were full of sand and an aerosol can of sun screen rolled out from underneath the blanket. This is simply unacceptable. This is a situation where they are trying to cut corners, take advantage of people, and save time and money at my expense. Absolutely disgusting. Now, the reader is probably thinking, "Why in the world didn't you get up and get the heck out of there?" Well, we got in late, and it goes back to the three and six year olds mentioned above. By the time we figured out the bed was filthy, our kids were sound asleep. So, you have to pick your poison in that situation. Either wake the kids and try to find another place in the middle of the night or endure the unendurable. We went with the latter. After being informed, the owner simply said, "I'm sorry. Thank you for letting me know." Later on in the day, she sent an email saying she would reduce our charge by $50, bringing the price of the night's stay to $106. I appreciate the reduction, but who would pay $106 going in if you knew the bedding would not be changed? If you're really big into lesbianism and different acts you can perform on each other, and don't mind filthy beds, this could be your place. Otherwise, I'd avoid it and look elsewhere.

I love the ladies at the Duneswood!…read more The Duneswood is a small, privately owned 'resort' (think: motel). This is not the Hilton. It is a step up from camping or renting a cottage, but everything is clean and well maintained. The owners are kind and attentive. The rooms are small, modest ...and THEMED! I believe it used to be a women's only resort before it was open to anyone, so each room has a fem-theme -- cowgirls, chakra, etc. The common room has photos of influential women through history, feminist literature, and all six seasons of the L-word on DVD. Out back, the owners have spent a lot of time cultivating a beautiful garden, there's a patio table, twinkling lights, and a fire pit that begs to be enjoyed. We've come the last two years with a group of women for a bike trip, and we rent out a whole wing of rooms. It is perfect! The location of the Duneswood -- nestled into Sleeping Bear Park -- makes it easy to get on the paved trail and do some easy riding north (or tougher riding south). It's a quick walk to the dune clime, a smooth bike ride to Art's Tavern, and Traverse is an easy day trip. This year, we kayaked the Crystal river, which was so lovely. This is a great place for couples and friends. I'd like to come back in the winter for cross country skiing!

If you're looking for nearby restaurants or activities, be prepared to drive a few miles to Glen Arbor or Empire or beyond. Sleeping Bear Dunes national park is close, especially the dune climb trail which I highly recommend. Some of the rooms have small kitchenettes which are nice for preparing some of your own meals or snacks. My room included a refrigerator, microwave, some limited dishes, and a coffee maker. The bathroom provided towels and mini shampoo and conditioner, but no hair dryer. There is no housekeeping service provided during your stay, so I had to ask for extra coffee packets, shampoo, and conditioner during my stay. Though the room appeared pretty outdated, it was perfectly clean! The walls are quite thin so you can hear your neighbors next door or outside on the deck easily. The lake is at the end of the street, just a short walk away. Kayaks, paddle boards, and a canoe are available for guest use. The paddles and life jackets are located behind the building, so make sure to bring what you need down to the lake with you. On one evening, the innkeeper started a little campfire in the back which was charming. Overall, I enjoyed my stay here with some nice features, but also leaving a bit to be desired.
