First, let me give the positive about this establishment. The location with respect to Sleeping…read moreBear Dunes is just about perfect. But, unfortunately, that's about where it ends. The place is not really family friendly. It is a shrine to lesbians which, in any other respect, is fine, but I'm just looking for a place to sleep. I'm not looking for some sexual enlightenment in an overnight stay. There is a "community" area where there is a shared refrigerator, stove, games, books, and such. It is nice enough, but it isn't appropriate for the "community". The books there are pretty graphic, including information on fisting. Again, I don't care where you put your fist, but it isn't something I need to explain to my three and six year old. But, the worst part of the stay was the bedding. It hadn't been cleaned from the people who stayed there last. The sheets were full of sand and an aerosol can of sun screen rolled out from underneath the blanket. This is simply unacceptable. This is a situation where they are trying to cut corners, take advantage of people, and save time and money at my expense. Absolutely disgusting. Now, the reader is probably thinking, "Why in the world didn't you get up and get the heck out of there?" Well, we got in late, and it goes back to the three and six year olds mentioned above. By the time we figured out the bed was filthy, our kids were sound asleep. So, you have to pick your poison in that situation. Either wake the kids and try to find another place in the middle of the night or endure the unendurable. We went with the latter. After being informed, the owner simply said, "I'm sorry. Thank you for letting me know." Later on in the day, she sent an email saying she would reduce our charge by $50, bringing the price of the night's stay to $106. I appreciate the reduction, but who would pay $106 going in if you knew the bedding would not be changed? If you're really big into lesbianism and different acts you can perform on each other, and don't mind filthy beds, this could be your place. Otherwise, I'd avoid it and look elsewhere.

I love the ladies at the Duneswood!…read more The Duneswood is a small, privately owned 'resort' (think: motel). This is not the Hilton. It is a step up from camping or renting a cottage, but everything is clean and well maintained. The owners are kind and attentive. The rooms are small, modest ...and THEMED! I believe it used to be a women's only resort before it was open to anyone, so each room has a fem-theme -- cowgirls, chakra, etc. The common room has photos of influential women through history, feminist literature, and all six seasons of the L-word on DVD. Out back, the owners have spent a lot of time cultivating a beautiful garden, there's a patio table, twinkling lights, and a fire pit that begs to be enjoyed. We've come the last two years with a group of women for a bike trip, and we rent out a whole wing of rooms. It is perfect! The location of the Duneswood -- nestled into Sleeping Bear Park -- makes it easy to get on the paved trail and do some easy riding north (or tougher riding south). It's a quick walk to the dune clime, a smooth bike ride to Art's Tavern, and Traverse is an easy day trip. This year, we kayaked the Crystal river, which was so lovely. This is a great place for couples and friends. I'd like to come back in the winter for cross country skiing!

Unplugging was everything we didn't know we needed and this resort was the perfect place for it! The lake was our backyard and there are many toys on the lake that occupants can take advantage of! I was heartbroken that I set a new record high score and my daughter accidentally deleted it Luckily I took a pic as evidence prior to! Would definitely return with a different set of people to get a different experience! Thanks so much for you kind spirit and gracious vibes Kurt!

Brookside offers a lot of positives (pool! game room! lake views! cute brook, great to read beside!…read moreproximity to so many amenities by short drive!) but a few downsides that make the price point not fully align with the experience. The cold water tastes bad enough that you don't even want to make coffee with it, and the hot water in our cottage smelled of rotten eggs, and no amount of running the water made it better, so we really avoided showers. A small ant infestation in our cottage (and others reported the same) made me have to check every surface before I set my baby down. Between the pool water, the swimmers itchy lake water, the hard cabin water and the fly and ant bites, we left with myriad skin issues. There was inadequate surface for food prep in our cottage, I ended up placing in-use mixing bowls right in the sink while I cooked so I could use the tiny bit if counter space for a small cutting board. There were very few accessible outlets, so make sure to bring extension cords. A silly but annoying issue: you had to use two hands and really tug to open the utensil drawer (tough when you have a little one in arms). And while convenient to have coin operated washer and dryer access (located in the game room building), we had to run the dryer multiple times just to get a few onesies dry. That cost added up! It was a nice trip, despite the annoyances, but when the price is more than a mortgage payment, I'm left a little conflicted.
