Some of the rooms have balconies/porches, some open right to the outside like a motel, and some are just regular hotel rooms, plus theres a section where they allow dogs, so theres a lot of options. There's a nice sandy beach right outside, which was probably the best part. At breakfast they had coffee, juice, frozen waffles, toast, bagels, hardboiled eggs, muffins etc. There were biscuits and Gravy too There's a coffee shop and party store (with an ice cream counter!) Basically in the parking lot, and a lot of nearby restaurants, even within walking distance.

The owner, Steve, gave us a call before we drove up there to let us know power was out. He offered to help us make other arrangements, but we decided to wait to see if power would come back. Luckily the power was restored that evening. Steve made sure we could get in to Cottage #1 (closest to the lake) when we made our way up on Christmas day. The cottage was as described on their webpage and then some. Definitely cozy, but perfect for us. 2 bedrooms with full size beds, Linens provided. The bathroom was small, but clean and functional. A couch and a chair were in a sitting area with a small TV. The big picture windows were nice because you can see the lake from cottage #1. One of the main reasons we booked here was the kitchen. The other is that they are pet friendly. The kitchen is small, but I made it work. A big sink, a few feet of counter space, an electric apartment stove/oven, a 12 cup coffee maker (bring your own coffee and filters) and a full size fridge with top freezer. No microwave. Some cooking equipment was available (a few pots and pans, a colander, mixing bowls, cutting board, plates, bowls, cups, silverware) as well as dish soap. If you are going to cook meals during your stay, I would advise bringing paper towels (only one dish towel), foil, trash bags, a small baking sheet or 2 (half the size of a regular one), any spices you may want to cook with, a chef's knife, and paring knife. There is a table and chairs, and out the back door is a picnic table. The furnace is old, and made pinging noises when it was not running (the metal in it cooling down) but kept the whole cottage comfortable. Just keep the bedroom doors open if you want heat to reach them. There is no air conditioning, so I'm not sure how it is in the summer. Overall, the place had a real "Up North" family cottage feel. The off season rates are great and you can stay by the night. In the peak season, you need to book a whole week, but rates still seem reasonable. Right next door is the state park with beach, playground, and picnic tables (must have a recreation passport or can buy day passes). On the other side is a produce market. Lakeside Charlie's (local restaurant, even though I am from Cadillac I have never been there, but hear good things) is a short walk away. The office is in the bait shop, which is great if you fish and they also rent boats and ice shanties. For what we paid (~$80 per night in the off season) this place worked great for my family. We needed a place to stay we could bring our dog, cook our own meals, and not break the bank. There was a nature trail nearby that was great for walking the dog (on a leash, please!). If you forgot anything or realize you need something, Meijer and Walmart are just across town. Not sure if we would come back in the summer, but in the off season we will surely be back. A few recommendations for improvement to the owners: A carbon monoxide detector would be good to add, as the furnace is older. There seemed to be some water damage along the back wall of the cottage in the kitchen near the baseboards that needs fixed. it was purely cosmetic and did not really detract from our stay, but needs attention.

There were others when I thought, "Hey, this place isn't so bad!" Why I thought this was a one-starrer: *The carpet. Old, stained, smelly. Rip it out and replace it with tile or linoleum. Carpet generally is a bad idea in rental cabins. *The sofa reeked of wet dog. * Ventilation. There are two large picture windows in the main area of the cabin, which give fantastic views of the cabins across the driveway and the parking lot of the state park next door (yes, and Lake Mitchell too, barely), but don't open. There is a tiny window next to the stove that slides open, and if you open that, then leave the front door open (leaving the screen door closed), barely enough air will circulate to keep the temperature tolerable on a hot night. The bedroom windows swing in to open, which means they get caught in the curtains and you never get a nice steady draft though the night. Seriously, if you come in summer, bring a fan. Or two. *The ceiling tile was wavy, and one ceiling light was partially detached. Why I thought it wasn't so bad: *Aside from the carpet, the place was generally clean. * Shower was large, water pressure was good and there was plenty of hot water. *Cooking/eating ware provided was cleaner, in better condition than in most other cabins we've stayed at. We usually bring some of our own, but probably could have gotten by without that here. *Bed was fairly comfortable. *The charcoal grill provided looked relatively new and clean. There is quite a bit of road noise here, though we've spent time in the area before and knew that going in. Our neighbors on the other hand were quiet for the most part. While I can't wholeheartedly recommend this place, if you do need a place to stay in Cadillac, you can probably get by here. I think it could actually be quite pleasant with some renovations.

I got unit #17 and they told me we could park our truck with boat trailer just a few units down. The room was very outdated but it was clean, so no complaints there. There was a restaurant just a few feet away, so that is really convenient (although we didn't eat there). There is lake access that you can walk across the street to with a rickety pier to walk out on. The reason for the 3 stars (besides the general rundown look/feel to the place) is because our bathroom smelled SO bad. I'm not sure where it was coming from (drain? ceiling vent?) but it was disgusting. We were able to drop our key off in the lobby in the morning to check out. The price was reasonable and they were one of the only places that was dog-friendly and didn't have a 2-3 night minimum, so I may return, but would hopefully get a different room.

From the outside you can convince yourself its charming but then you open the door and it's like walking into an episode of the Twilight Zone. It's like a scene from an old horror movie, I kept waiting for Norman Bates to show up. We had a 2 bedroom cottage with a living area, it had one small AC unit to cool the entire thing, needless to say it did not cool the room. There were an unusual amount of mirrors, kind of freaked me out, not sure what's behind those mirrors. The room was pretty clean, as clean as you can get 30 year old carpet. The sheets appeared clean but there were spider webs in all the corners and the water smelled like a combination or iron and sewer. We did not sleep well. It could be a great place if someone fixed it up, great location.

On our way my wife was calling hotels & motels on our way. They were booked or no answer. Then................. Micheal called us back! Who does that! He have a room. Thank you. We got to the room, my gosh was it extremely clean and accommodating. We slept so well. Quiet, calm, & relaxing. It was a close second to a 4 star hotel. Great job Econo Lodge. I would highly recommend this hotel…read more Last night there was a snowstorm in the area and whiteout conditions meant that it was not safe to drive at all. I stopped here for a room. Nate, the employee who greeted me, was so kind. They did not have any rooms available and he was extremely apologetic. I went to use their restroom and I came back and he had called the other hotels in the area and found one right down the street that had a room! I was so incredibly grateful since it was not at all safe to drive further. A few moments later as I was about to leave. He asked me to wait a moment and had received a text from the owner who had given me permission to use a room that apparently is normally not available on the reservation system. The room was clean, quiet, and I got a really sound night's sleep. I am so grateful to Nate for helping me. Had he not helped me find a room, whether it was at his hotel or the hotel down the street that I was not aware even existed, I would have had to sleep in my car.
