Mushkaki burger, spicy chicken and chicken quesadilla

What is there not to love about Mushkaki? It's a hole in the wall with good food at a very reasonable price. This joint is run by a family and their food is Somali fusion. T-Bone Steak ($11ish) - Very decent, properly cooked and seasoned Mushkaki Burger ($5) - Made from real ground beef with an egg on top. Not the best burger ever but it's pretty tasty, also pretty filling for a $5 burger. Spicy Chicken($11 with side and rice) - Really GOOOD, tastes as delicious as it looks. The rice is also cooked perfectly (dried long rice). Chicken Kata Kat ($9) - Meh, while it was tasty, it had too much bread and not enough meat. Mushkaki Fries ($9) - Mind blowing, best thing on their Menu! Cheese curds with their sauce and generous amount of chicken. Best option for a good meal at a very reasonable price.

I found this hidden gem when I was searching for a restaurant for my birthday lunch with coworkers. If you make it to this place you are in for a surprise, the menu is great with variety of choices to indulge on. Everything is made then and is fresh! Service was exceptional as we walked in with around 10 people and there were plenty of seats. The owner/ cashier at the till was very friendly and patient with us till we figure our what to get as everything on the menu looks good. Food-wise people went with burgers, Honey Garlic Chicken, Spicy Chicken, Quesadilla and Pasta w. Roseo Sauce and all the people enjoyed the food as it was fresh and hot. I went with Mushkaki Beef Burger which is topped with lettuce, tomato, fried egg, cheese, mushkaki sauce, ketchup, and mayo. I also added one more beef patty on to the burger...and WOW the burger was too good! hot, cooked well and yet juicy and the egg went so well with it. I also choose their spicy fries and they were very good, crispy and with a different taste. The portions are really good also expect a bit of a wait as the food comes out fresh. They have a TV in the restaurant for sports fan. I will definitely come back as there is so much to try especially Mushkaki Fries. Which the owner stated is a meal to itself as it comes with chicken in the fries. For my Muslim Folks - This place is Halal friendly and their entire menu is Halal, also stated on their site.

I was skeptical of trying this restaurant at first but I'm glad I did. Their Mushkaki chicken is to die for. Their burgers are perfect. I also tried their chicken steak but didn't like it as much as the mushkaki chicken. The price is amazing for the delicious food and portions are HUGE.

Somewhat secluded dining area at the back.

The service at this halal restaurant is great. The menu has a lot of variety. Everything is freshly made and tasty. I spent like literally 10 minutes looking at the menu trying to pick 1 thing because I wanted to order like 4 things. They had everything from burgers to pasta to ribs. There's something for everyone here. Mushkaki, I learned at the restaurant, is Arabic and East African for "bbq" or "grill". The staff were very very friendly and well acquainted with the customers. They were happy to explain menu items with pride and make a suggestion. I decided to go for the mushkaki fries. It was fries with barbecue sauce, cheese sauce, green onions and sauteed chunks of chicken. It was very tasty. And very saucy and strong in taste. The BBQ sauce was kind of sweet but very BBQ'y. As an adult I would say that it probably had too much sauce but I think teenagers and kids would like it. If you are interested in this dish, I would just suggest that you ask them to just drizzle the bbq sauce on the dish. Everything is freshly made so expect to wait a little bit before you get your meal. You can call ahead and order and pick it up. There is a lot of seating and there is a TV that had sports on. I would say that this place is good for family n friends hang to out for a quick bite. I will be back and I would recommend this place to anyone.

It's located next to a gas station, noticed it while pumping gas. I had the Mushkaki fries, which are sweet with pieces of fried chicken being semi hot. I also had the Mushkaki burger which I didn't fancy to much because it comes with a fried egg on the beef patty. The owner is hard working and makes most of the menu from scratch. However it is a Somalian restaurant in which the menu is inspired from. Another note the washrooms are bad and are located in the basement of the unit. If your in the area of Kipling and Rexdale, get the fries.

Wonderful homie feel to this small family owned restaurant. Ordered food and came in less than 5 min. Each plate more delicious than the next. I was very impressed by how honest and friendly the staff were. Will defiantly come back for their pasta with Alfredo sauce. They gifted us a small cake with ice-cream on top.

The Party Jallof was delicious, with a nice smokiness to the rice and the chicken seasoned spectacularly. I'm typically not the biggest fan of plaintains, but the plaintains that came with the rice were crispy and savoury. It was my first time trying fufu & egusi, and for the most part it was exactly what I expected! The stew was tasty, and the fufu had such a unique and lovely texture. Similar to Ethiopian food where you use the injera to pick up the meat/veggie stews, you use the fufu to scoop up the egusi. However, since fish bones are used in the stock, I found several fish bones in my dish that ruined the experience of it. It is a little on the pricier side with these dishes at $26+. The portion of rice could have been bigger, but tastewise everything was great. I would definitely come back to try other dishes and to have their jallof again!

Since this place first opened last year, I've been wanting to try it…read more 2022 was my virgin experience with Nigerians and their food, specifically jollof rice, something I had initially at Afrofest at Woodbine Park and then later at Mild Afro Lounge and restaurant. If you had Ethiopian food, and think that's the end of Africa, you're wrong-oh! Nigerian food is completely different and more lovable by far. I'm a huge fan so far, after just trying it thrice. Starting with the rice, it's that engaging chewy texture to the rice itself that is totally addictive and unlike any other fried rice dish I've tried. And the flavour-forward bold and distinctive seasoning that starts in your mount and permeates all the way to your brain and beyond. Incredible and a huge step in varieties of experiences food-wise that you are likely to have in your life. My dish, seen in the pics, came with a side of plantain. Carrying on with the theme of a smashingly-good outside charred-like texture and caramelized-flavour along with a tender and moist-soft yellow fluffy inside these little buttons of joy make an incredible taste experience on your tongue. And last but not least is the chicken legs (with thigh). Omg that sauce is tangy-spicy good! And the outside of the chicken has a caramelized chewy texture that is totally addictive and had me gnawing away at the bones trying to find every little morsel of it. The inside is tender juicy dark meat, wonderfully soaked in that epic sauce flavour. How many times have I mentioned "flavour" in this review? Not enough, you need to experience this for yourself! Highly recommended in a barren strip of Spadina, just south of Bloor on the east side. Check out the menu and go with a group so you can try more stuff, and... invite me, I wanna wanna go!! Anytime, NO Wahala!

I discovered Jollof at Afrofest a couple years ago and hooked on that tangy spiced rice and chicken. There's steam trays at the back to choose your selections from and create a dish. Starting with 3 kinds of rice, of course including the reddish Jollof rice. Then move on to the meat and veg dishes to complement the rice. Many choices from fish, whole chunks almost caramelized into chewy spicy goodness, turkey, chicken, all drenched and simmering in intensely spicy sauces. Let the super friendly staff suggest topping the rice with some of that ish and it's pure heaven! I grabbed a Zobo, a home made drink concoction that sounds like the Caribbean ginger beer. Staff cautioned me not to drink it with the spicy food I ordered so it's coming home with me. Not gonna ignore that caution! There's a bar and comfy pseudo booth style two tops along the wall to hang in and take in the ambiance as well as the Afro beat music going on. My only complaint would be the value. My meal was $22.95 not including a drink. In a competitive market like Queen West where there are plenty of good value meals this is pricey. And I left wanting more so there was no leftovers to take home. Welcome to the hood Africa, glad you're here with us : )

There's an entire section dedicated to grilled meats, and even a meat platter that you can split. A subset of our group ordered an african thali platter along with the simba grill platter. The thali platter came with Ugali. Having never tried it before, it was an interesting experience. As described, it was tasteless on its own and is meant to be eaten with curry or other flavouring. The curries that came with the platter were great. The grill platter comes with various different offerings of BBQ, including wings, beef mishkaki (cubes of beef), chicken mishkaki (cubes of chicken...), and spare ribs, along with some salad and fries. It is a great way to sample each option to see what you like.
