THE place for East African food. The atmosphere is authentic, the food is delectable and the friendly owners are like family! Love, love, love!!

I had the pleasure of trying out this delicious cuisine this weekend. We ordered a 3 person share plate, that came to $17 per person. It came with 4 types of appetizers: -Mogo -Daal Bhajia -Beef Samosa -Meatballs Then a main platter with 4 meats: -Chicken and Beef Mishaki - cubes of seasoned meat -Beef short ribs -BBQ chicken wings And spiced fries, cabbage salad and a pop for each person. The dishes weren't spicy hot, they were flavourful and spiced. There were 4 dipping sauces: Tamarind, Coriander, Pepper, Coconut. The owner was stellar and explained the dishes prior to serving us. Amazing, friendly and welcoming service! It was a wonderful experience. I'd come back for the mogo, samosas, fries, and beef short ribs. I recommend trying this out!

Having travelled to East Africa (Tanzania in particular) many many times, I have always been craving the fusion african/indian street food that is so common there. I had heard about this place from some friends so finally we made our way to Simba Grill. The inside is small and cosy with enough seating. Colours and photos surrounding the little restaurant are all memories of East Africa. The menu has a lot of choice and all the favourites that I was craving! If you know african cuisine, you know it consists of a lot of cassava. So of course, we had to order the fried mogo (cassava) which is absolutely delicious especially with the sauces they give (pili pili, amli/tamarind, coconut and coriander chutneys). We also tried the beef samosas (these are much different than usual samosas and infact my favourite type - smaller and crispier with a meat and onion filling), the kababs (exactly the same as the ones you get at tea time in African tea shops) and lentil fritters which were perfect! We had the mixed grill plate which consisted of the beef and chicken mishkaki (bbqd cubes), bbq ribs, bbq 'sekela' chicken with wings and masala fries. I honestly felt like I was in Tanzania as the food brought back so many memories! Everything was absolutely delicious!! They are open til late so we went around 10.30pm which I feel affected the service a little as the workers seemed quite tired and were not as attentive. Also, the mishkaki felt a little dry and salad was quite simple so that could definitely be improved. Other than that, I will definitely be back when in Toronto again! They even have Kassata (african ice cream) and traditional local foods such as ugali with fish! Definitely worth visiting if you want to try something new... even just a plate of mogo is worth it.

Sorry for the bad angle, but this is the front of the restaurant.

The food was so good that my husband and I literally found ourselves eating with our eyes closed, just humming the entire meal because every bite was that delicious! We also had several appetizers, including the shrimp skewers and the shrimp with mashed plantains, plus a few other delicious items that made the table look like a feast. My husband enjoyed one of their cocktails, and I had a refreshing grape-like juice that was incredible (I wish I could remember the name because I'd order it again in a heartbeat!). One thing to know before you go: this is a small, family-owned restaurant where everything is made fresh to order. So don't come in a rush. Come ready to relax, enjoy the atmosphere, have great conversation, and appreciate a meal that's well worth the wait. Every dish is prepared with care, and it truly shows. The best part? We loved it so much that we went twice during our trip to Toronto. The first time it was just my husband and me, and we enjoyed it so much that we brought our godson and his fiancée back with us for another meal. It was just as amazing the second time. Anytime I'm in Toronto, Afro Beats Kitchen will be on my itinerary. This place gets 100/10 from me. Highly, highly recommended! If you're in Toronto, Afro Beats Kitchen is an absolute must-visit! The Party Jallof was delicious, with a nice smokiness to the rice and the chicken seasoned spectacularly. I'm typically not the biggest fan of plaintains, but the plaintains that came with the rice were crispy and savoury. It was my first time trying fufu & egusi, and for the most part it was exactly what I expected! The stew was tasty, and the fufu had such a unique and lovely texture. Similar to Ethiopian food where you use the injera to pick up the meat/veggie stews, you use the fufu to scoop up the egusi. However, since fish bones are used in the stock, I found several fish bones in my dish that ruined the experience of it. It is a little on the pricier side with these dishes at $26+. The portion of rice could have been bigger, but tastewise everything was great. I would definitely come back to try other dishes and to have their jallof again!

Since this place first opened last year, I've been wanting to try it…read more 2022 was my virgin experience with Nigerians and their food, specifically jollof rice, something I had initially at Afrofest at Woodbine Park and then later at Mild Afro Lounge and restaurant. If you had Ethiopian food, and think that's the end of Africa, you're wrong-oh! Nigerian food is completely different and more lovable by far. I'm a huge fan so far, after just trying it thrice. Starting with the rice, it's that engaging chewy texture to the rice itself that is totally addictive and unlike any other fried rice dish I've tried. And the flavour-forward bold and distinctive seasoning that starts in your mount and permeates all the way to your brain and beyond. Incredible and a huge step in varieties of experiences food-wise that you are likely to have in your life. My dish, seen in the pics, came with a side of plantain. Carrying on with the theme of a smashingly-good outside charred-like texture and caramelized-flavour along with a tender and moist-soft yellow fluffy inside these little buttons of joy make an incredible taste experience on your tongue. And last but not least is the chicken legs (with thigh). Omg that sauce is tangy-spicy good! And the outside of the chicken has a caramelized chewy texture that is totally addictive and had me gnawing away at the bones trying to find every little morsel of it. The inside is tender juicy dark meat, wonderfully soaked in that epic sauce flavour. How many times have I mentioned "flavour" in this review? Not enough, you need to experience this for yourself! Highly recommended in a barren strip of Spadina, just south of Bloor on the east side. Check out the menu and go with a group so you can try more stuff, and... invite me, I wanna wanna go!! Anytime, NO Wahala!
