This review is LONG overdue, but in 2018 I purchased two pieces - an early 19th century engraving of George Washington and a WW2 war bond poster - which given their age and fragility, needed to be handled with the gentlest of touch and looked after with ultimate care. This is a long overdue review of Rick's services, but better late than never! My family has had a textile floating around for the last 4-5 decades that is "supposed" to be the back or sleeve of a samurai's kimono. I'm not sure how true that is, but the piece is spectacular nonetheless. It is in my possession now and I wanted to get it out of the ziplock bag it's been in for the last 20 years and have it professionally framed. I didn't want to take to one of the craft store chains because it is a one-of-a-kind family heirloom and deserved better treatment. I did my due diligence and found Museum Framing here on Yelp. Rick deserves every star he gets. He's a great guy and treated my piece with respect and care. He coordinated the transfer of the piece to a textile conservationist who steamed the item so it could be framed in its best possible condition. Rick spent A LOT of time with me helping me pic out a frame and explaining how textiles should be framed. I probably had about 1/2 the stores frames on the table at one point, but Rick didn't complain. Rick delivered my piece a couple weeks later and it looks FANTASTIC! People like Rick (Museum Framing's proprietor) are the reason you choose a small business over a chain retailer: his knowledge, reliability, and fairness are unparalleled. All I know about custom framing is that it's expensive, so I try like hell to avoid it. But recently my gf's mother gifted me with a beautiful poster than demanded a frame. Was wary of going to a boutique shop right on the waterfront in Old Town because the location screams pricey. But I trusted the reviews and made my way to Museum Framing anyway. Museum Framing is no-frills; just a guy named Rick in a small shop who knows exactly what he's doing. He showed off a wide selection of frames, gave me a number of matting options, and steered me to a different color frame than I originally intended (one that looked a lot better with the piece). The turnaround was 3 days and, to my surprise, I ended up paying less than half of what my gf paid to have a similar piece framed at a large chain. I walked away completely satisfied. I am remiss in that I had a print framed over 2 years ago at Museum Framing, yet never finished my review. Rick and his staff were awesome. I spent about an hour with Rick, picking out frame and mat for a large fine art photograph of a mountain in Antarctica that I had purchased. I had struggled with ideas on how to properly display the print, which is my all time favorite. I knew I was in the right place, when I met Rick, the owner. He spent about an hour with me, discussing various options, unsure at first, I quickly became comfortable and confident in Rick's expertise and in his advice. When I picked up the print, I just glowed-- it looked perfect in the shop and even better after I hung it in our living room. Look no further than Museum Framing. Your treasures are safe there. You will treasure them even more, after they are framed and put in your home or office. This business makes me WANT to make the effort to dig out all the art I've bought on my travels over the years, drive to the heart of Old Town, and get them framed, because the work is THAT GOOD - and an solid value! (See end of this review for special note on Rick's diploma framing special offer.) We needed to frame a diploma, an un-bound oil painting, and to fix a lithograph that had slipped from it's mount inside the frame. We were impressed with the blog, Rick's passion for his work, and I don't know how better to describe it, but his ethics. Rick feels strongly that there's no excuse for charging people excessively for framing, especially sub-standard framing - you'll know that if you read his blog! He's a true craftsman and his work is impeccable. He loves what he does, and it shows in all facets of his work and his dealings with customers. The oil painting came from a gallery in Costa Rica, and it's 'folk art' style with bold colors. My instinct was to go to with a dark 'raw' wood for a rustic look... but Rick advocated for a lighter wood which turned out to be absolutely the right choice - it brightened up the painting and really makes the colors pop. The lithograph was my first 'real' art purchase years ago - a Toulouse Lautrec that I adore. I had it mounted at a commercial place, and it had slipped from its mount. Initially, I just wanted that fixed - but Rick explained that the original mat and mount was not acid-free, and it was damaging the lithograph. When we took it out of the frame, it was easy to see the discoloration. :( After years in the business, he looked at the mat and said the color was not doing the print any favors anyway - he suggested to replace the mat with a different color, and WOW what a difference THAT made! Fortunately, the damange was only on the edges, and Rick re-mounted it with acid-free backing and mat, and also replaced the glass with a UV blocking one. For a cherry wood ($$$) frame on the 16"x16" canvas oil painting, and re-framing of the ~18" x12" lithograph with a double mat and UV glass, we paid a total of $230 - that's more than what you'd pay at Michael's, but a fair amount less than what other similiar 'professional' frame shops charge (without the same level of service). Framing is not cheap, because labor is involved, and the quality of the materials makes a difference - I'm rating the price as moderate, because of the value Rick provides and the very fair, transparent pricing. Rick's work speaks for itself, but what I can't explain is how wonderful it is to work with him on a project - you feel like you've known him all your life! H's always happy to explain anything about the craft, answer (in our case seemingly endless) questions, and treats each project like it's his own. It's exceptionally rare to have straight five-star ratings when people are ready to complain and vent online at the drop of a hat. I agree with another reviewer that if I could give him more stars, I would. Please patronize this business! DIPLOMAS: Rick has a wonderful policy that he'll frame any diploma up to a 16x20 for $125 with a choice of frames. My husband is getting a degree in May, and this is $50 (plus shipping) less than the University's 'endorsed' framing partner - plus you get a choice of the style, and you're supporting a local business! read more

I had a bad experience with another framer in Old Town, and called Rick to see if he could salvage my original painting. Not only did Rick immediately look at my piece free of charge, but he gave me the expertise I needed to go back to the original place and get a full refund. I didn't know anything about custom framing before, and now I can tell the quality of everything from the mat to whether the glass is truly UV-resistant. Rick uses all acid-free materials (no paper mats)--so no worries that the edges of your pictures will see any bleeding or discoloration from outgassing. Rick has framed several pieces for me, from an inexpensive poster to an antique map. The work is always impeccable, the prices are ridiculously reasonable, and the service is very fast (I think I had a two-day turnaround one time). Rick is always working on something weird or unique, and he's always happy to talk about his work. One suggestion: Rick's hours are flexible and the door to the complex is frequently locked, so call ahead if you're planning a trip. There is also garage parking off an alley, which is a nice alternative to street parking. read more

As you can tell from other reviews, Rick and Museum Framing are quite awesome. I came here from a friend's recommendation and I was blown away by Rick's hospitality, knowledge, and pricing. I had a piece of art that I adored which needed to be framed. I went into the shop (call Rick to get help with parking or finding the place) and he asked me what kind of frame and color I was looking for. I told him I thought a silver frame would work well for the piece. He agreed and in a very short amount of time, we found the perfect frame. He was immediately able to give me the pricing and I was happy to hear it was way under my budget. I mentally prepared to go in there spending at least $150 (piece is 20"+ in length), but the total for the frame and labor was only $50. Talk about having a good afternoon. I should note that the frame was not super fine wood or anything like that (that would definitely cost you more, obviously), but it was a modern decor, great-looking frame. I came back that weekend to pick up the piece and it was perfect. Framing was excellent and Rick made sure I was completely satisfied. The service here is extraordinary. From the first phone call (to schedule an appointment) to the frame pick up, Rick was a friendly and professional individual who puts you at ease and makes the sale seamless. I can't remember the last time I was so pleased with a service. I had never had professional framing done before, but I needed my law school diploma and 2 certificates framed to hang in my new office. I was worried about going to a fancy custom shop that would charge hundreds per frame. I stumbled upon Museum Framing's website and read that Rick had a special $99 deal for diplomas of certain sizes. I'm so glad I checked him out! Rick is extremely professional and knowledgable about all aspects of framing. He framed all three of my items with solid wood frames, 100% cotton rag matting and UV glass for only $360. (I had previously bought a pre-made frame from a university bookstore for $175 that was neither solid wood nor had UV blocking glass, what a rip-off!) He helped me pick the most attractive frame and matting for each of my items. I can't wait to put my diploma and certificates up in my office! I have already recommended Rick to several of my friends who are about to graduate or have just graduated. It is a little tricky to find his shop, as he does not have a sign off the main road and it is inside a small shopping center. On Saturdays the shopping center door is locked, so be sure to call in advance so he can open the door for you. Highly recommend! read more

He and his staff, like April take enormous care and time to ensure you get the framing exactly as you envision, but also make great aesthetic suggestions that have helped us change our opinions for the better. Additionally, his shop has a quick turn around of 2-4 days, considering the numerous pieces they are doing. They also have framed several very interesting historical and cultural pieces for purchase if unique art collecting or hunting is your hobby. If I had more wall space, we would definitely consider some of their larger pieces. Lastly, while not really part of the store for viewing, as you walk around for your framing consultation you may catch glimpses of other customers' pieces in preparation for framing; and it is quite amazing the photos and art people have or bring in around the area. I had such a wonderful experience here! It was a few days before Christmas and a print I'd ordered for my boyfriend from Spain that had been delayed in shipping finally arrived. I had almost given up on getting it framed in time but I figured it was worth a shot. I called Museum Framing and Rick the owner answered. I asked if there was ANY chance he could turn this around quickly. His response, "Sure thing. Come on in tonight and we'll figure it out." So I went that night and Rick couldn't have been more helpful. It was a little on the late side but I didn't feel rushed at all. He took his time with me, showed me different options, prices, etc. It was clear he wanted me to be happy with what I purchased. With Rick's help I finally settled on the perfect frame/mat combo. They did an amazing and speedy job framing a 100+ year-old map of Baltimore that I bought for my boyfriend. My friend referred me to Museum Framing and I could not be more pleased. I called Rick on a Friday night, brought my 3 large diplomas to him on Saturday morning, and picked everything up Monday afternoon. The price was so much better for what I was getting than every other frame store I had looked at, especially since I am getting much better quality framing. Everything is carefully fitted and put together so that the diplomas are preserved, will not wilt or yellow, and can be removed with no damage. I am very impressed. You're going to pay almost as much (or more) and you won't get the service, quality and expertise you get with Rick's operation at Museum Framing. Rick takes ownership of each and every job. I've tried numerous other places, paying full price and also discounts and have NEVER gotten the quality or care that I ve received from Rick and his staff. For the same (or lower price) than other places, we receive a MUCH HIGHER QUALITY framing job. Rick always uses conservation quality cotton mats and UV protection glass. Why anyone would go to Michaels is beyond me. I love to support local shops and this was a good choice. When I brought in two pieces to be framed I really wasn't sure what I wanted. I explained to Rick that it was to submit to a local art exhibit and as a new artist, I really didn't have a ton of money to invest in framing. He helped me pick out two frames that looked great, even texted me along the way to make sure he was cutting one of the pieces the way I asked. He said he was busy with a bigger project, but was nice enough to just bang out the job for me in a few days, which I really appreciated.
