I learned that Basil Bandwagon has been open for 25 years. The year they opened, I was eating cold Pop Tarts while running to catch the school bus at 6:55am. In those days, fat-free was all the rage and considered "healthy" -- never mind all the refined carbs, loads of sugar, and preservatives. These days, I'm a strict vegetarian who is mostly vegan. I cook a lot and eat fresh produce daily. I appreciate that BB offers a healthy alternative to basically all the crap fast food otherwise available in the area. We ordered a wrap from the cafe and decided to eat it there. The seating was a counter with a few bar stools but it was clean if not spacious. My husband and I shared the "Freebird" wrap -- tofu-based mock chicken, sprouts, lettuce, tomato, and vegan mayo. It came with potato chips. Wow, this was so good! Clean tasting, hearty, and delicious. I was so impressed with it that we grabbed a prepackaged wrap from the cold case to take on the plane with us. We also picked up a few other vegan sandwiches which were okay tasting but overall too dense and heavy. Next time, I'll stick with the housemade items. I do find it a little annoying that BB doesn't seem to carry as many vegan items as they do things that are "paleo" and gluten-free. I also find that some of their food items are so outrageously overpriced that you'd be better off hunting around at the local grocery stores instead of purchasing them here. The next time I'm in town, I'll be there to order another yummy item from the cafe. Now, as a health-conscious adult, I still shop here regularly. Not just because of the gluten-free selection, but because of the quality of the food, locally sourced products, healthy options, and all of the unique and niche things you don't find at a conventional grocery store. I've shopped frequently at both the Clinton and Flemington locations over the years and have consistently had great experiences at both. There are tons of options for gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, and plant-based diets, along with a great selection of snacks, specialty products, supplements, fresh foods, and local goods. Within the last couple of years, I also started ordering more frequently from the café, and I can't believe it took me so long! I'm a huge fan of their wraps. They have gluten-free tortillas and bread. They somehow make wraps with relatively simple ingredients taste unbelievably fresh, flavorful, and savory. I've ordered the same wraps at both Clinton and Flemington and they taste practically identical, which says a lot about how consistent the café is between locations. My personal favorite is the Free Bird on a gluten-free tortilla. It's vegan and gluten-free with tofu salad and a savory mustard, and it blew my expectations away. I also love the sauces and dressings they use in the café. I discovered many (if not all) of them are made in-house and are even available bottled to take home. The house-made vegan honey mustard is especially delicious and worth trying. For drinks at the café, I'm a big fan of the Strawberry Fields protein smoothie and the So Kal juice. I've also done their two-day juice cleanse, which includes 12 fresh juices that you can order ahead and pick up. Whether you have specific dietary restrictions, eat vegan or plant-based, prioritize locally sourced and health-conscious foods, or just like discovering interesting products you won't find everywhere else, it's such a fantastic local resource. And with convenient location (right near downtown Clinton) and convenient hours (8 AM to 8 PM every day), it's an easy place to keep coming back to!

Elderberry is coming next week! Kambucha helps digestion and contributes to a feeling of well-being and relaxation, George says, and my short experience with it agrees. Plus it's just fun to drink. And for me, it seems to help stave off hunger pangs. The flavor is reminiscent of beer, but livelier and somewhat sweeter. And did I mention it's only 40 calories per 8 ounces! Everything Natural Too also has added a bakery counter with gluten-free products - chocolate tarts, apple nut tarts, coconut cookies...a fairly wide selection.
