On my most recent visit to my hometown of Flemington, I took a trip to Basil Bandwagon to grab…read moresomething healthy (and vegan) for our long flight home back to the West coast. I learned that Basil Bandwagon has been open for 25 years. The year they opened, I was eating cold Pop Tarts while running to catch the school bus at 6:55am. In those days, fat-free was all the rage and considered "healthy" -- never mind all the refined carbs, loads of sugar, and preservatives. These days, I'm a strict vegetarian who is mostly vegan. I cook a lot and eat fresh produce daily. I appreciate that BB offers a healthy alternative to basically all the crap fast food otherwise available in the area. We ordered a wrap from the cafe and decided to eat it there. The seating was a counter with a few bar stools but it was clean if not spacious. My husband and I shared the "Freebird" wrap -- tofu-based mock chicken, sprouts, lettuce, tomato, and vegan mayo. It came with potato chips. Wow, this was so good! Clean tasting, hearty, and delicious. I was so impressed with it that we grabbed a prepackaged wrap from the cold case to take on the plane with us. We also picked up a few other vegan sandwiches which were okay tasting but overall too dense and heavy. Next time, I'll stick with the housemade items. I do find it a little annoying that BB doesn't seem to carry as many vegan items as they do things that are "paleo" and gluten-free. I also find that some of their food items are so outrageously overpriced that you'd be better off hunting around at the local grocery stores instead of purchasing them here. The next time I'm in town, I'll be there to order another yummy item from the cafe. Thanks Basil Bandwagon for catering to us "healthy" folks looking for something tasty and satisfying to fill our bellies.

    Nature's Harvest

    Nature's Harvest

Nature's Harvest is owned by Michael Specchio, where he peddles expensive, unnecessary supplements…read moreto people desperate to feel better. Allow me to begin by saying Michael Specchio is not a licensed doctor (medical or naturopath) and there is a significant chance he will make you feel worse. This, mind you, is only discoverable after you've spent roughly $2,000. I've truly never had a worse experience with a provider as I did with Michael Specchio, let alone ever been gaslit or belittled to such a degree, and the whole process reeks of scamming. My brother had a better experience (possibly because he's a man, as Michael expressed his preference in helping men, so women beware) and saw results, which is why I wanted to try him out. It's $350 for a consultation and $250 for follow ups (that's as of this posting, they will raise the prices on you without notice or consent). You'll be asked to send in "recent labs" without any clarification as to what that means, probably because Michael doesn't even look at them. Just like with my brother, he ordered $700 worth of tests that can't be reimbursed by insurance, and despite my results being quite different from his, put me on the same exact diet, which is essentially the candida diet. Turns out, that diet has no studies behind it and rarely helps people with CFS (my biggest issue). Rather than providing a comprehensive list of approved and unapproved foods, Michael will rattle off a few things you can eat and a few you can't, and send you off. After you try this highly restrictive diet, you begin to have questions about things he didn't mention, and when you ask his support staff, they will largely ignore you and encourage you to spend another $250 to ask Michael yourself. I've never been unable to contact a provider directly in this way. A full month after asking for a list of foods and attempting the diet the best I could, I finally received a list. When I asked him why this wasn't provided to me sooner, he tried to argue that he customizes diets for every patient, which simply isn't true, as my brother's diet was virtually the same. He then tried to gaslight me by saying he spent 15 minutes going over the diet with me and that it was my fault for not understanding, when, in fact, I have the recording of the appointment (he encourages it) and he only spent a fraction of that time, and there was more on the list that was never mentioned than was. And though he apologized, he did so in an insincere and aggressive way, his ego-bruising resulting in interrupting me at every opportunity (when I brought this up, it seemed to make him interrupt me even more). Ironically, while he tried to blame me for not taking enough notes, he had taken zero notes on me, so every visit was like the first consultation and I would have to repeat my issues all over again. He will also prescribe $800 worth of supplements FROM HIS OWN STORE. Sounds pretty shady, right? In the three weeks that I tried this program, I felt absolutely horrible, and discovered that because he made no effort to listen to me, that these supplements were flushing out a vital medication that I told him about multiple times. I spoke to my usual licensed ND/MD and she looked him up to find he was not licensed, that all of these tests were unnecessary, and his radical supplement regimen was not only over-taxing my system, but could have put me at risk for pernicious anemia. I'm full of regret for not running all of this by her first, as she could have saved me a lot of time, money, and misery. I wanted to try Michael because he helped my brother, but his heavy-handed, blanket approach to treatment simply wasn't tailored to me or my needs. Never have I felt so attacked or exploited by a treatment process. They fleece people who desperately want to live healthier, normal lives, and we pay because it's our only hope. To exploit people like us is truly shameful and horrendous. I recommend finding a licensed naturopath in your area instead. Best of luck to you on your journey.

Finally one is just around the corner! I stopped by on a weekday and was greeted at the door by a member of their team. After I told him it was my first visit, he explained the prices on the two sizes as well as the flavors they had available for the day. I got a couple of tastes and ended up leaving with a 12oz of the ginger tumeric and a growler of the red zinger. All for around $26-$27. I usually go through one of the Health Ade bottles a day so I love that these are organic and locally nano-brewed. They don't have the tartness that most kombuchas I am used to have, so that is either a plus or minus for you depending on your individual preference. Oh! One more thing, if you live nearby and plan to go here quite a bit, go for the growler. You bring it back with each visit and refills are $15 compared to the $20 you'll spend on your first time. So of course this is a *Covid times review and I felt that they took some great steps to keep customers and their staff safe. They have a little table set up outside where you drop off growlers and pick up refilled ones. Hand sanitizer was on the table and a menu was on the window so the whole interaction was nearly contactless. Andddd now my ginger turmeric is officially done...

I got a caramel latte which was flavored exactly to my preference! The caramel was not too sweet, didn't taste artificial and the double espresso was roasted perfectly. At the chocolate counter, I order a few different items. Just about all the chocolate is made in house (including the springtime/Easter specials)! The only items not made by in house are the peanut/peanut butter containing items (which are kept in a separate case). These items are sourced from Asher's Chocolate Co. Mr. Pops does this to ensure all of the chocolates made on site are 100% peanut free. The ambiance is quaint. Mr. Pops is decorated to elicit memories of a chocolate shop of old. I spoke with owner Tim who added to the pleasure of the experience. I am excited to return soon to Mr. Pops where I anticipate trying something cooler as the weather warms! In the corner of Mr. Pops I spotted an ice cream case... I hope this is an indication of ice cream and/or gelato coming in the near future. I would love to try an affogato from Mr. Pops! I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Couch is comfy, but floor plan in the back area is a bit awkward, you go down some hallways to get to bathroom and pass some lonely candy shelves. Chocolate quality is so-so, it lacks a richness and cocoa bite. Ice cream flavors are very interesting and strong. I got the banana cookie ice cream in my affogato and, while I wish there was more ice cream, it was QUITE good. My wife didn't want all the caffeine from hers, so I walked out 320mg of caffeine richer. Would return for ice cream and ambiance.
