Great selection and lower prices than any other natural food store in NJ. I was astounded at the price of a gigantic jar of honey being $20 - always pleasantly surprised at the low price tag when i check out with lots of food. A unique store with everything organic . Fresh veggies and fruits , meat , dairy , fresh and packaged food & beverages , dairy , fresh nuts , baked goods , cleaning products , cosmetics , incense candles , you name they have it . It's like a Trader Joe's of sorts in size and products , but they carry most known organic brands . A bit pricey considering it's all organic . They have a deli with sandwiches soup salads and dessert . It's a fun store to shop if you are picky about getting specific brands. Fresh produce is a bit overpriced but some things like onions are still priced right . I liked how organized it was and it was not super crowded . The date walnut balls that I picked up from their deli was very tasty and a quick pick me up dessert or power snack . You have to walk around this store and explore the products at least once to figure out if it's for you . read more

Whole Earth Center is definitely the kind of place that requires you to break out the Birkenstocks, hemp undergarments and your 1972 Volvo, converted to run on newly rendered kitchen grease. It also might help to rename your children Banjo and Cedar. This place certainly puts the crunch in crunchy granola. But before I get too carried away with the long since departed Whole Earth Catalog stereotypes, they also carry a significant assortment of fresh organic baked goods, meat substitutes, sandwiches and fruits that all come to market sans pesticides and artificial coloring. That can't be bad. In fact, once you've tasted a raw oat muffin that can double as a shower loofah, your life (and your colon) will be changed forever. why on earth does this store sell california strawberries year-round? Berries are not meant to last for weeks at room temperature and hence require lotsa dioxin as a preservative. this is deadly for children. there's lotsa chips and ready-made sauces, but the produce is often unmarked as to origin, and not nearly enough emphasis on local produce. read more

I was in there with my service dog and after I already paid the woman followed me out the door and made a scene and embarrassed me. she said I want to know what your dog is trained for!? I pulled out my service dog card as I did not want to disclose my medical condition in front of everyone who was staring at me in the store, she said I don't want to see a card I want to know what your dog is trained for? The good the bad and the dang expensive: Small market when you want something healthful plus nice array of fresh grocery items IE: veggies are plentiful. But not the place to buy your essentials such as baking soda as you may find the tiny one for big bag price. But, at least you will find most of what you need! The pre-made foods are mostly full of additives/sugar but apparently 90% of the world thinks that's just dandy! They have some hard-to-find healthful snacks & bulk too. Just be prepared to kiss wallet bye-bye. It can be crowded and small space so allow plenty of time for that. I'm not sure how they are running via pandemic so call first! read more

Edit 07/2018: prices have increased slightly but are still very reasonable. A few tips: 1. Grab a ticket before you get in line - they take orders by ticket number. 2. Ask for a sample of the items before getting them if you aren't sure! 3. Sometimes the fridge area has 1/2 off items (e.g. salad)! --- This review is just for the deli. Disclaimer: I'm not vegetarian/vegan but I do love eating vegetables, possibly to an excessive extent. The deli attached to whole earth center is legitimately my favorite place to eat in Princeton. It's vegetarian but has a ton of vegan options (e.g. soy cheese and Nayo). It's reasonably priced for a deli in general, so for Princeton the prices are amazing, especially the sandwich prices which amazingly don't seem to have changed in the last five years (according to the old menu pic anyway). It also serves hot entrees, soups, and prepared cold grab-and-go items (including wraps, salads, and desserts). It's a bit of a trek from campus but I think it's definitely worth the walk. The sandwiches/grill items here are split into two broad categories: 1. Fairly standard items - BLT, veggie burgers, quesadilla, PB&J, fakin' bakin' melt 2. Massive things overflowing with raw vegetables - everything else I'm in love with the second category. The pita sandwiches are huge; one whole sandwich (around $6) can easily be a meal for two people if they aren't extremely hungry, and whenever I try to eat a whole one for lunch I feel completely stuffed the entire day. They pretty much all look vaguely similar the hummus or Colby melt photos attached, but with different veggies inside. My favorite is the rainbow, but all are delicious in the same teeming-with-veggies way. Shredded carrots and other parts might fall out as you try to eat, but this doesn't bother me. I don't really like the grill items as much since the outside is hot, but the raw veggies inside are still cold, but they're still good. The pitas/English muffins also tend to get really hard and dry when grilled - it's ok in some because there's so much moisture from the vegetables, but in other sandwiches like the BLT this just makes it too dry. I don't eat a lot of tempeh but the tempeh bacon here doesn't taste very much like bacon. It's a little sour and the savory flavor isn't evenly distributed, but it's not unpleasant - I actually like it quite a bit with the mustard. The soy cheese seems pretty standard based on my limited experiences with vegan cheese - kind of soft and sour but looks like Kraft singles. (Once I had the seemingly brilliant idea of just stocking up on a bunch of rainbow sandwiches to save walking time, but the next day I realized this idea wasn't so brilliant due to their moisture content... oh but this might work better with the premade rainbow wraps??) The whole earth salad is also really really good - it's made of kale, tofu, carrots, red cabbage, brown rice, sesame seeds, almonds, and a lemony vinegary dressing, and it comes in boxes of varying sizes in the fridge area. There are a few other salads as well, but in general the cold items are less filling for a higher price than the sandwiches are so I haven't tried many of them. (The whole earth salad is worth repeatedly buying though.) Similarly I haven't tried any of the hot items - the enormous veggie-filled sandwiches have my loyalty. There are also a lot of dessert options - the fridge with premade salads and wraps also contains cupcakes, tart slices, pie slices, coconut balls, and rice pudding; there are also cookies by the pound and other goodies in the bakery section. I'm not a huge fan of the vegan baked goods I've tried here - the vegan fig tart had a very hard/brittle/cracker-like crust that kept separating from the filling, and the vegan chocolate cupcake was a little dense/gummy/sticky feeling (though very chocolatey and the frosting was light). The pear and almond cake I tried from the bakery section was much better though. Service is variable* but generally has been friendly enough in my experience, but the way that they take orders isn't the most efficient and it's not always clear who is in line to order/where the line is. I also agree with a previous review about the clientele here being weirdly hostile (maybe I'm one of them??). The indoor seating area has a lot of outlets but isn't very clean, and while there is a recycling bin I'm mildly sad about the lack of composting. There's also an outdoor seating area with some tables and umbrellas (and trash and recycling). Also, this isn't part of the deli but inside the market they have fig bars in the bulk section and Aqua ViTea kombucha on tap (!) *a weird interaction: I called to ask if hours would be standard on a certain day, the employee who picked up "I wish we would close early.. yeah if you could give me permission that would be great," I laughed awkwardly, and he responded that yes they closed at 7 but I can't be a single minute late. I'll pay extra for good food but not for bad attitude. ----------------------------- Some of my vegan friends swear by this place so I decided to stop in for lunch to go while I was in town. The food was good - the whole earth salad that people drool over was every bit delicious as promised. But the workers weren't nice. No smiles, barely any interaction at the register and surly men working the loading and stock from the outside. I have a soft spot for local health markets, especially when they have a cheap vegan deli attached (you'd be surprised how many of these kinds of establishments exist). Whole Earth is one of my favorite ones, and gets even more points for being the only one for miles around. ***LOCATION & INTERIOR*** There are 3 sections--the deli with some seats to eat at, the dry goods area, the fresh veggies/fruit area by the registers. A very well organized store where you can easily find what you need. The dry goods area has two walls of bulk goods (you know, those containers of nuts, dried fruit, grains you can get however much you need of the item), which I absolutely love. Not the cheapest for nuts, but they have a good selection of grains for reasonable prices. They even carry sweet brown rice, which you can usually only find in Korean supermarkets. In the back is a small wall of baked goods, with many vegan options! ***FOOD*** Whole Earth, like most health markets, is very vegan, gluten-free, etc. friendly. You can find all of the popular health brands, and they're not too expensive. There are often sales which push the prices to below what you would find at Whole Foods. The veggies/fruit section has a great variety and is very fresh. Again, you're paying a premium, but I think the quality is definitely better than your normal neighborhood supermarket. My favorite part is the deli, which is vegetarian only with vegan options. They have a menu of burgers and sandwiches which are all really surprisingly cheap. The one I always get is the tempeh BLT, which loads up the tempeh strips and veggies for a really filling, really yummy meal for only ~$4.50 after tax! You won't find such a cheap sandwich anywhere nearby, and certainly not a vegan one. Besides the menu, every day there are a few different hot food items, like rice and tofu, that you pay for by the lb. There's also a refrigerated section with to-go salads and sides, but I find those to be a bit pricey. ***NOTES/RECOMMENDATION*** Absolutely come for the veggie deli if you're vegetarian/vegan/a cheap college student, and you'll leave with a happy, full stomach. OK so they have this salad, right? It's kind of like ceviche kale with almonds, brown rice, cubed tofu, shredded carrot, sesame seeds, red cabbage, and a citrus vinegar dressing. The more you chew, the better the greens taste. This salad is incredibly complex and has more ingredients than a Twinkie (OK, not even close, Twinkies have like 56 ingredients and none of them come from dirt). The point is, all the variation allows for the eater to acquire all the macro and micro nutrients they need for the day! PLUS, it's deLICious. Like, seriously. It's called the Whole Earth Salad, and if there aren't any there when I go back for mine next week, I'm going to be as pissed off as I will be proud of you for trying new things. Whole Earth Center as a....whole? Haha. Yeah, it's a winner. Locally owned for like 40 years, newly renovated with an enlarged deli section. As much alternative selection as Whole Foods with a much more knowledgeable staff if you have questions. Oh, and everything is organic. EVERYTHING. More importantly, they feature local FOODS -- produce, cheese, dairy, meats, and poultry. By supporting local farmers and craft producers of raw and other whole foods, this grocery store supports the health and finances of the community of Princeton. It used to be I'd come to this place for stuff I couldn't get at the Whole Foods store, but I'm now officially spending more in this store than I am at the Whole Foods. I still go to Whole Foods for certain items, but WEC is now the first place I go to on grocery day, so if it's available at both places, I get it here. Part of the reasoning for that is that it seems to me that my local WF is now carrying less organic than they did before, and more national brands instead of local. I like at least being given a choice, and I really am not getting it now. The WF has really lost their way. The other reason I'm digging the WEC is that it's just a nice place to shop. It's small enough to be shopped quickly, and large enough to carry a decent variety. Because their selection is so lean, I don't do too much in the dry/prepared foods section, but I go nuts in the fruits and veggies area. My only criticism of the fruit/veggie area is that they don't tell me what part of the country their vegetables come from on the tags. They're almost all organic, but I don't know how local. I can also buy yogurt from grass-fed cows grazed right here in Jersey. WF can't even keep their yogurt section stocked. The bulk foods area is great, and I especially like that I can bring my own container, weigh it, and then use it for the bulk foods I'm purchasing. The vitamin/health aids area is way too big, and to me at least, is disorganized. (Why does the vitamin B need to be in six different places?) That just bugs the heck out of me. Fortunately they've got someone back there all the time to help me find what I need or want. I understand why they have so much space dedicated to vits and minerals (it's the money), but I'd rather they'd add a few more dry goods instead. The people at both WF and WEC are equally helpful and friendly (maybe WF's people are a little nicer if you need a winner), so it really comes down to ease of shopping, and a better selection of organic products that makes the difference for me. My parents see the whole earth employees more than they see me their child. While my grandmother makes a fake vomitting face because she says their food doesnt compare to hers- and how could it gram you are rite. That being said they have a close second when it comes to homemade food. My parents frequent here.... everyday. Big fan of the classic kale salad and everything from the hot bar is always great and we can count on the quality. This place does not dissapoint and is such a great healthy option. Excellent produce, which makes me wonder if it's really organic as it's all so perfect looking. Many varied selections, including cosmetics and personal care items as well. Though - be sure to Read 'Ingredient Lists' on back or sides of all items. Some things marked as *Organic contain palm oil and other undesirable ingredients and chemicals. Be advised that I recently learned a US Organic insignia no longer really means true organic, as it's been 'downgraded' to include 'Hydroponics', which in my opinion, and that of many organic farmers, is 'not' organic at all. So I now wonder if the produce is hydroponically grown. (?) I learned many organic farmers reacted to the downgrade by creating their own organization for truly organic labeling. ALSO, check *Pricing as you're being rung up at check-out station. Last month, a large jar of honey, explicitly posted as $10.+ cents, rang up at $23.+ cents. While shopping, I had carefully checked it's bar code and item name, description & weight, against the price sticker posted in front of it on the shelf - yet it rang up as the more expensive item, which is next to it, but that had a different name. Unfortunately, I didn't notice this on my receipt until I was home, 20 miles away. SO, if checkout worker moves too fast for you, then either ask he/she to slow down so you can see each price, or review your receipt 'before' leaving the store. (Expensive lesson.) read more

Nowhere on the store's website does it mention that they still require customers to wear masks inside. Walked over from my house to pick up a couple of items only to find about 20 signs outside noting the store-imposed mask requirement. It is their prerogative to require masks, but the requirement should be stated on the website homepage so as not to inconvenience customers. Whole Earth is my "go-to" for any healthy speciality food items and supplements. All their veggies and fruit are organic and always look fresh. They have nuts, flours, spices and more all by the pound. Their homemade cookies are super healthy but also super tasty! The people who work in the vitamins and supplements department are especially helpful and knowledgeable. Lastly, they offer a senior discount (if that is important to you) which is a very nice gesture. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is that I find some of their packaged good overpriced. read more

I'm not one to frequent shops like this, but with my family getting older and being more concerned with our health, we decided to take a ride into Princeton and check it out. I have always had a good experience at "Deans" in Red Bank, so I was expecting a something similar. If you don't mind being overcharged for supposedly "healthy" items that a snobby & pretentious worker that barely had a moment to help you with, then you should shop here. My family was made to feel stupid for asking questions about some of their products, most of which, I recognized from bigger food stores for less money. I find the people working at Wegmans, Whole Foods and even Trader Joes to be more informed, more helpful and just plain old nicer. I don't need a side of arrogance with my quinoa, thanks. They are mostly famed for their plethora of decently prepared lunch items (hot & cold) that seem to be popular for the "I want to eat healthier, but I don't have the time to cook myself" set. But as a health food store, I find them to be a huge fail. It used to be that they were $1 higher on $5 items, but now they are up to $1 higher on $2 items: not acceptable in my book. If you like old style groceries and natural/organic foods, Whole Earth Natural Grocery is the place for you. It is everything that Whole Foods could be, but isn't. Minimal commercialism, reasonable prices, deep community roots, and a sense of true wholesomeness that makes you feel good just to be there. They carry most of the well known organic labels, while local sourcing their produce as much as possible. Their signs and ingredient displays are clear, and best of all they don't dedicate a third of their floorplan for overpriced buffets and salad bars. No. Here you buy what you want to eat, take it with you home or to your office, and enjoy good grub. As with most natural food stores, it is not a one stop shop. You will still need to go elsewhere for most canned goods, and those non-organic items we all still rely upon. No worries - with so many alternative groceries around from Wegmann's to Trader Joe's and Shop Rite, you can get anything you want within a small radius of WENG. Don't take me wrong. I love organic produce and belong to the largest CSA in the country but there is something wrong at this place. I can't figure it out. This is the best source of organic vegetarian food in this entire region. I've been coming to it from across the state since the 1980's, and it has since expanded (and I've since moved right into Princeton). The food is of the highest quality, and it carries an impressive variety, including bulk organic grains and dried foods, bulk teas, bulk green cleaning products, and fresh produce (locally grown when possible). Best of all, it now includes a delicious all-vegetarian prepared foods department (with limited sit-down eating for lunch). If you want to lunch here, come early or be prepared to wait in line, as it gets busy. Parking is tight. The entire store is small, but packed full and extremely well managed. People who think Whole Foods is natural, organic food have no idea until they've tried Whole Earth, which is the Real Deal. read more

This is a Honey Brook Farms CSA drop off, so I have been here often over the last couple of years. They've got a number of things that I can't find elsewhere, and a much better selection of vegan products than any other store nearby. The Sunneen foods vegan "tuna" and "egg" salads are wonderful, as is the treeline goat cheese. The trouble is that most things are just prohibitively expensive here. (The Sunneen products are the exception--highly recommended.) Produce is astronomical, and I can get better quality for less money at Whole Foods or Wegmans. Bulk spices used to be a real selling point, but the outstanding Savory Spice Shop downtown makes this point moot. Pasture eggs--nice, but I can get pasture eggs for cheaper straight from a farmer on Saturdays (Princeton Junction) or Thursdays (downtown Princeton). If I happen to need a quick lunch, sometimes I'll stop in and get a container of vegan dumplings. The samosa dumplings are my favorite. The treeline goat cheese is arguably better than regular goat cheese, which is saying something, but it's also $8.99 for an egg-sized package, which is more than I'm willing to pay. read more

Get the sunburger at the deli, and ask for it to be prepared vegan. They have vegan mayo available. Why is it that every time you go to somewhere with great local products you have to feel like you need to grow out your hair, start composting, and start doing yoga? Nevertheless, Whole Earth Center does have the best selection of local and organic foods in Princeton. They also have a deli area that makes a killer kale salad (I have to get it every time I go there). They have an extensive selection of packaged foods, frozen foods, local dairy (including cheeses from Cherry Grove Farm. Yum!), and a pretty sizable vitamin/supplement section if you're into that kind of thing. In terms of produce, people who aren't used to seasonality may be disappointed when they go looking for asparagus in, say, December and not find it. But rest assured that the produce you are getting is fresh. So go, wear your Baja Hoodie, don some dreads, and go shopping! Namaste. read more

4.5?? I'm a huuuge fan, I swear! The only thing that keeps this from getting a 5 is the prices. But hey, it's Princeton, and I guess I have to deal. Anyway, I love this place to pieces! They have a great wholesome selection of products, mostly organic, lots of healthy and awesome stuff - think Whole Foods or Trader Joe's but with even more of the tradtional local grocery vibe. I usually skip out on the pre-packaged stuff as I can get it cheaper elsewhere, but I am all over their deli and bakery! Their eggplant spread, curried sweet potato soup, and vegan coconut orbs are to die for, not to mention they have a heavenly selection of healthy delectable baked goods including their amazing vegan cookies and muffins. Ahhh, I just want to buy out their entire stock of store-made goodness every time I go. Oh oh and I almost forgot, they have an incredible lineup of bulk bins from nuts and grains to herbs and spices,, dried fruit, nut butters, cereals, everything that you could possibly imagine buying in bulk. Update: Wow--what a change this place has had in the past year, and for the better. I'm happy to come back every other week or so now. Not only is the selection fantastic, fresh, and local, but the staff is too. They go out of their way to help out anyone who appears lost, needs questions answered, needs help filling a dish liquid container (and not just me). Even the checkout people are pleasant now. And their stevia remains the best I've found (it's not the NOW brand that Whole Foods had, btw, as I've compared them--the stock at Whole Earth is much much sweeter). When I've needed items not in stock, they've ordered them straight away. After my daughter was born, we needed gripe water; not in stock, but after they found some, I was called to be told it had arrived--the next day. They stock infant probiotics, which is safer for and works better than mylicon (though your baby's poop will smell like yogurt). The "soup" bin is also great for organic produce to be used in a day or so, at $.69/lb. I've found portobello mushrooms in there too. They just added a fresh cashew butter machine too, and spelt from NYS. The cracked oats were great as a replacement for barley in my recovery stew, but also were incredible in my home made haggis. Here are my reasons: 1) Quality of goods is fantastic: you won't find better locally sourced produce plus some dry goods, breads, microwave popcorn, beeswax. Their fresh peanut butter is better (and cheaper) than anywhere else--and yes, I bought sub-par peanut butter from nearly every other store in the area and hated it (the dog didn't care for it either). Also bulk red raspberry leaf, the hottest cayenne pepper, bulk detergents, the only good powdered stevia, and a nut-carob bar that tastes like dark chocolate. They also have goat butter. 2) It's locally owned 3) Some people who work there really go out of their way to help you and to make you feel welcome--those in the prepared food section, the woman who knows everything about supplements (dried apricots have calcium!), the tall woman who could reach the glycerin for me 4) The building is LEED certified So we're testing it out again. I have been going to the Whole Earth Center for over 18 years, I drive from 45 mins away. The lunch deli counter has very tasty, organic, fresh and vegan food at a reasonable price. The bakery has delicious daily baked breads an goodies. The locally grown, organic produce section is excellent. The overall store vibe is relaxed. The selection is good, the layout is convenient, the staff is friendly, knwoeldgable and the prices are reasonable. This is hands down the best independent, health food shop and supermarket in the tri state area. You won't be disappointed. read more

I must have passed this place a million times before finally stopping in. So glad I did as it is perfect for vegans or anyone who wants to eat extremely heathy. It's a decent sized supermarket with nothing but healthy and organic versions of everything. Actually ended up doing a decent amount of grocery shopping here. They also have a cafe section with seating where freshly cooked food is served. I had myself a plate of chickpea stew with roasted potatoes and collard greens and it was very good. I was expecting a decent tasting meal, but my expectations were certainly exceeded. Overall this is the perfect place to shop for the health conscience. Prices are cheaper than whole foods and there are about 70% less people in there. I'll surely be coming to this place consistently if I'm in Princeton and need to do some grocery shopping or want a tasty vegan meal. read more

This place is an awesome alternative to Whole Foods and especially since I'm vegan, it offers a lot of options. The produce, although a little expensive, is really fresh and mostly local. I'm obsessed with the guacamole and the vegan almond butter bliss balls. There's also tons of super foods and gluten-free options which is really great. I just wish there were more fruit options and that they were more conveniently packaged. Overall, really great. read more

Small, extremely well-stocked store that is busy constantly, especially at lunchtime for their deli of creative items. The grab and go dishes and sandwiches are excellent too. Wish I had this in my town. I heard Meatloaf Night is huge. read more
