After trying to explain each month I can hardly walk or even stand up she told me cardio would help. This appointment made me feel so hopeless, I've never cried in a doctors office until yesterdays appointment. She told me she "didn't want me to feel like she was just throwing a pill at me" but that's exactly what happened. I wasn't able to explain myself, and I think it really comes down to me being young. I'm only 20, but I know my body, I've been going through my cycles for nearly 9 years, and I didn't feel heard. I tried to make it clear that my menstrual cycle is nearly tearing my life apart and I don't even know if I can make it through another month, but she told me to come back in 4 months to see if anything changed. I tried being as open minded as possible, and I understand that she is busy, but this just added to my negative experiences of women's health care. This doctor would be great for someone looking for reassurance that they're healthy, but if you feel that something is wrong, based off my experience, I would NOT recommend this doctor. Unfortunately, especially if you are young :(

I came to Dr. Butler with concerns about chronic pain in my vulva. Over the course of the ten minutes she spent we me she proceeded to blame my recent weight gain, tell me I was "being dramatic", and condescend to me for using the wrong medical terms about a condition I did not know about until that visit. On top of her overall horrible bedside manner, she was unnecessarily rough while examining me causing me to cry out in pain. When I did so she asked me why I was acting like I was in pain despite the fact that I was there because of pain in my vulva. After having complications with a medication she prescribed me I returned to the office to find out what was wrong. After waiting with my clothes off for a full half hour she chided me for returning over something "so minor" and then preceded to act as though I was making up that she prescribed me the medication that cost me $120 with insurance. When she finally found the note that she had in fact prescribed this medication she completely dismissed my concerns. I have now left her office crying twice because of her rough treatment and I advise anyone looking for a gyno in the city to steer clear.

The office is located off of St. Clair in the Northwestern Memorial building (and there is validated parking available); the office is very cute, clean, and modern, and I waited less than 10 minutes after my scheduled time (which is pretty much unheard of; the receptionist also apologized which I thought was ridiculous!). I filled out basic medical history and such on their patient portal beforehand, which I thought was quite convenient and makes things more efficient. I was really excited with all the raving reviews on not only on Yelp, but on other health websites that rated Dr. O'Mara. When the doc walked in, she was extremely nice, very knowledgeable, straightforward, a great listener, gentle, professional, and very informative. She listened to all of my health issues as well as my thoughts and opinions, and basically gave me a plan of action. She took her time with me, asking questions, and the whole time, I was not felt rushed! The best thing is that she was very genuine and I was extremely comfortable, being a new patient with all these high expectations! There is a lab on-site, and the phlebotomist, Lauren P., was so sweet and kind, and drawing blood was not at all uncomfortable (considering I have a very low threshold of pain and am such a pansy!). Dr. O'Mara and everyone on staff seems to be extremely detail-oriented and organized (which I absolutely love). The high ratings on the doc do not do her justice - she really is AWESOME. I have a follow-up next week am actually looking forward to a doctor's appointment - isn't that crazy?! I am looking forward in being Dr. O'Mara's patient for years to come! +ask for Angie, the receptionist :D +Dr. O'Mara = AWESOME +limited parking (park at garage)

Dr. O'Mara's office is a clean, modern one-physician practice. She exhibits all of the professionalism and knowledge I have come to expect and appreciate from Northwestern practitioners and affiliates. I was randomly assigned to her through Northwestern's physician referral practice after I suffered a serious medical event and I was shocked by how great my experiences with her have been. My initial consultation was in her office, where she interviewed me about all of my health concerns, family history, and really took the time to get to know both me as a person and my health issues. Despite a relatively complicated health history, Dr. O'Mara has gone above and beyond. She takes the time to research issues about my medicine and listens to my questions, no matter how silly they may seem to me, in a non judgmental environment. She has followed up on problems or before procedures through phone calls about things I, at times, hadn't even thought about. She is always eager to explain these things to me. She truly cares about her patient's well being and happiness -- even following up on what I thought about places she had sent me for a referral. In short, I have never received this level of care with any doctor before. Her assistant, Angie, is also very nice and helpful. To top it off, it's extremely easy to make appointments here, and Dr. O'Mara keeps an electronic portal where you can ask her questions, view your test results quickly, and access other features from your visits. If you need a new internal medicine doctor, visit Dr. O'Mara.

She gave me a Pap smear while I was having my period, which I knew would skew my results. At the time, I questioned her, she told me my fears were unfounded & not to worry. Thousand of dollars later after a very painful biopsy of my uterus, I found out that I was fine and it was all unnecessary because of the Pap smear during my period. So last March, when I started having problems with pain in one of my hands and dropping things (I'm 26 and active, so that's not really normal for me), I decided to visit her. It started out well enough, as told to by the receptionist, I arrived 15 minutes early to fill out paperwork. Then was taken to a tiny, stuffy room where I waited a full hour. Ok fine, doctor visits aren't known for being speedy or in rooms with nice air flow. Finally the doctor pokes her head in, introduces herself, and asks if I wouldn't mind if a student doctor from Northwestern sits in. I said that was fine. She said she'd be right back. Several minutes later she came back with the student, introduced her, and left. The student, who was very friendly, spent a good 45 minutes asking me about my family health history and discussing my hand. She spent time moving it around, feeling it, etc. She took detailed notes the whole time. When she left, she left the door ajar and I could hear her and the doctor discussing me, my health and my hand for about 25+ minutes. By then, I'd been there 2.5 hours, and was not happy. Finally the doctor came in and proceeded to ask me all of the same family health questions the student did, even as she was holding the student's notes in her hand. She asked about my hand, didn't touch it, just asked a few questions. Finally she recommended that I quit my job and look for a new one since the repetitiveness of it was causing the pain. She also took some routine blood tests, because I was overdue for them. Three hours later I left. THREE. Are you kidding me?? It gets better though. She said she'd call in a week with my test results. Two weeks later I come out of the bathroom to see that I have a missed call from her. I call back and the receptionist answers. When I asked to speak to the doctor, she said "She just called you a few minutes ago, why didn't you answer?" I said I hadn't heard the phone ring. She said "When the doctor calls you, you answer, she is a very busy woman." I repeated myself, and said I wasn't ignoring her, I hadn't heard the phone and since it was a week past when she said she'd call, I hadn't exactly been sitting on the phone. She ended the call saying she'd have her call me. Fast forward exactly seven months to now... I never got a call back, and I only just this week received their bill, even though I saw when it went through my insurance company several months ago. This doctor (and clearly her receptionist) have no respect for people's time. Why didn't the doctor just sit in with the student, as initially implied, to save everything from being discussed more than once? A huge waste of time for us all. I will not be back there.
