Still a wonderful trail after all of these years! I come here often to explore the trail and lake views. I've also done long runs out here training for trail ultras over the last decade and have enjoyed that. If you are a trail runner/hiker/or just want to up your game and get fit COME HERE! The nature views are colorful and it is tucked behind a neighborhood that makes you feel as if you are not in DFW anymore. If you enjoy boating they also have a dock area as well as a pavilion to bring your picnic baskets or cooler etc. They have a main entrance where they check you in but it is a free park to the public. There's also a cute marina café and other things to explore. Come enjoy and get your nature on now that the weather is cooling off. read more

Wow. I did not know Dallas had nice active areas like this. I am glad I am venturing out more and more to discover these beautiful areas! I came out here mainly to bike. Love that it's free. Well I started off on a trail, not knowing what I was getting myself into. Let me explain, I have a mountain bike and I have only ridden it on paved areas so far... This is my first time taking it on a trail designed for mountain bikes! It's crazy. I got the hang of it tho. People here are extremely nice! Who knows if it's because I am a girl and I was the only girl biking thru this but all the men kept asking me if I was okay when they would pass me. Haha I even got lost and some nice men helped me back to my way. The trails are also good for hiking...and yes you do have to be careful of the men biking but they are very alert and I doubt collisions even occur. After biking I went towards the water and admired a few people fishing. They have about 5 picnic areas where I was... And you can walk out on the rocks and stare at the lake. I am definitely coming here again to bike or hike. Maybe even camp out sometime! read more

Great no-frills park to get you outdoors! We ended up camping here with a church group and had a really nice time. We did a little bit of hiking and fishing, and a lot of hanging out, so this was a great spot for us. The bathrooms were a little shady, but whatever - it's nature. read more

One of our favorite places on lake Grapevine! Our family likes it more and more each time we go--which is one way of saying it's more than meets the eye. It took some exploring to find the best spots, but it was worth it. Great place to be for long summer evenings with the kids and our dog. Pros: Free for day use--woohoo! So many areas to explore. The shore is varied and interesting for exploring and enjoying the sunset. The hike & bike trails are a nice way to get into the woods. Lots of wildlife if you're quiet: deer, herons, egret, bunnies etc. Small beach areas are fun for kids wanting to wade in or launch kayaks. Open areas for kite flying, throwing a football or frisbee, or kicking a soccer ball. Plentiful picnic areas. Boat launch near entrance of park. Cons: No frills--there are no playgrounds. We've never used the bathrooms, but they look pretty basic. Basic picnic areas. Inexperienced bikers: be careful--there are some significant challenges when riding. It's been a long time since I've been back here and now I have to say that it's still a nice park to visit. It's a US Army Corps of Engineers park so their basic picnic spots look much like all the other picnic sites at their other parks. When we first got here at the gate I didn't know that it was free entrance into the park so I was waiting for the gate attendant lady to ask me for some money and to give me a pass or something. While I was sitting there in my car right before she waved me through, the Flower Mound cop sitting his lazy ass in the booth starts yapping his I'm a dickhead mouth and starts being smart with me about not going thru the gate already. I'm guessing the douchecop was just bored of not giving people speeding tickets on the road that day. Jerk. Our picnic spot that we got dibs on was pretty cool. It was right by the shore of Lake Grapevine with a nice view, had a stoned/metal camp fire ring, and concrete table and seating. Be prepared to swat away some bugs and spiderwebs that kind of hang under the site's awning. The lake shore is kind of rocky so you need to be careful not to slip. If you're fishing, there's plenty of flat rock spots where you can sit and fish. Also if you're into catching your own minnows for bait, there's plenty of'em as I saw little kids netting away in the cold lake water for their lazy bum parents. A downside of this park is that alcohol is prohibited as well as glass containers, so I'm gonna suggest using a beer koozie or plastic bottles and cups for your undercover drinks. When I was helping to clean up I noticed that there was tons of boxes of Coronas and Bud inside the dumpster. Party on muchachos. When driving to and from your site don't drive faster than the limit posted. The Flower Mound 5-0's were pulling people over left and right. read more

Park has some picnic sites and places to fish and swim. Northshore Trail is fun to hike or bike. Camping is primitive and cost $10 a night. And I mean primitive. No water or electric, only has one pit toilet and only some of the sites have tables, fire rings or grills. No alcohol is allowed so make sure you leave it at home. Park Rangers and Flower Mound PD patrol regularly and I've seen people get tickets. You only have to pay $$$ if you're camping. Entry into the park for the day is FREE! read more

Too many mountain bikers to walk the trails. I had to step off the trail 6 times in the first 5 minutes on the trail. No joke. The corps of engineers should set aside some trails for walkers/runners only. I know the cyclists are focused, and that they don't want to wreck, but all were rude and going way too fast to be close to the trail entry. Rock formations around the water are very nice. Picnic area is awesome. The water is beautiful. Too bad the woods aren't more accessible. read more

We go to Murrell Park often. I love the fact that it's free to get in - I honestly can't think of any other lake park nearby where this is the case. Visitors can bring their dogs AND the dogs can actually go in the water with owners - something that is almost always prohibited at other area lakes. On the downside, the park is not very well maintained. Don't even try to use the one bathroom house since it seems to be rarely cleaned. The stench is unbearable. There are several port-a-potties scattered throughout the park, which is convenient. However, these are also rarely cleaned and you might want to bring your own toilet paper. There is quite a bit of debris on the shoreline - old tires, broken bottles and discarded cans are strewn about in many spots along the water. The water looks a little sketchy, but we swim in it often and so far so good. If you have a pair of water shoes you might want to wear them since the rocks can be mossy and slippery - we saw someone take a nasty spill. There's a sign at the gate that says no alcohol is allowed in the park. I'm not sure how they enforce this since I've yet to see anyone patrolling the park. Maybe they patrol more at night, and since we've never camped here I can't say for sure. The view of the lake is beautiful. There are several biking and hiking trails and that seems to attract a lot of people. There are several campsites here, but there are no showers. We've actually seen people bathing in the lake, with shampoo bottles in hand. But, what else can you do when there's no place to shower? Lake parks are severely underfunded all over the U.S., which is a terrible shame. So, I get why it's a struggle to maintain this particular park - given the fact that it's free to get in and camping is cheap. Even with the lack of showers and adequate maintenance I'd still say this is a great park to spend the day at the lake. It's free and you can take your dog along too. read more

I love this park! Keep in mind this review really only covers the trails. I think when reviewing a park based on mostly the trails you have to review the people you encounter. Sure one day you might encounter a few snobs that are not up to par on trail etiquette, but overall this is one of the most friendly parks i've been to. People move over if you are riding faster, stop and talk to you when you have stopped and above all they always stop to check on you if it looks like you are struggling or have a mechanical problem. The trails offer a mix of novice and expert sections. The thing i like most is that the trails flow really well, nothing is too much of one thing. I will say that i had a run in with the guard lady one day. She motioned, or so i thought" to drive on through the gate. When i passed up her shack up she lost it. I immediately stopped and backed up. She lectured me about the stop sign and how i have to stop. This wasn't a normal, "hey you messed up", this was a full on "i'm going to take your soul". Seriously woman!, You motioned to go through, it was a simple mistake, it's not like i just broke into some high clearance facility. Other than that, this is one of my favorite places to ride ! read more

On a hot day with a slightly cool breeze, this park is a nice choice. A group of Yelpers went to celebrate the birthday of Katie C. So we loaded up food and beverage (although alcohol consumption is not allowed, just be discrete) and parked ourselves at one of the covered picnic tables. We told the guy at the gate we were going to a birthday gathering, and he didn't charge us anything. I'm not sure if they ever charge anything though, as there were no signs posted anywhere. Murrell Park is located at the top of Grapevine Lake, I think. My sense of direction is extremely poor, however, from the lake shore you can see the Gaylord Texan, so I'm pretty sure we were north. The water was extremely warm, like bath water, and the rocks we climbed over were kind of dangerous with all their slippery moss, but somehow we all survived, unscathed. The grass surrounding the lake and the section we were at was mostly prickly and dead, which doesn't make for fun, but another group put up a volleyball net and had a game. We just sat at our picnic table, grilling and drinking. Another plus of this section of lake is that there aren't many boats screaming by at high rates of speed. I do suggest, however, that you beware of dead bodies floating around under your feet. Just kidding. Maybe. read more

This place is kind of sad. It is not at all scenic and there was a lot of debris scattered about. Perhaps the last flood did more damage than I thought. In any case, some trails were closed, tables were in disrepair, and water fountains did not work. The lady at the gate informed us that eating was not allowed in the park, even in our car. Ridiculous. Why and since when? Everywhere we drove or walked, people had ice chests, picnic baskets (as we did), and even grills. She was clearly misinformed. Entering the park is free making it at least a good value, even if it isn't very attractive. read more

Maybe it doesn't bother other folks as much, but the amount of trash on the shore in the picnic area is disgusting. We went Saturday early afternoon for a little picnic. Beer bottles, plastic bottles, beer cans, soda cans, snack bags and lots of discarded SOCKS for some reason washed up and also tossed around. It's not like there aren't plenty of trash cans in the area. It is a beautiful place with it's orange sandstone until careless humans had their way. The restroom was disgusting, hadn't been cleaned in awhile. I don't have a problem with latrines, but paper was strewn everywhere and I definitely didn't want to touch anything in there. A cleanup of this park or at least picnic areas is in order! read more

Great place to ride. The biking trails are challenging enough for an experienced rider to get a good work out and easy enough in spots for the novice to get a good ride in. It appears that there is free admission to the park. When we went in there was a guard at the gate, we told him we were there to ride bikes and he opened the gate. About the park and trails - this is Texas, so when it is hot outside the grass is brown and probably not very green. If you are obviously a city rider and expect perfectly green manicured trails and perfect trails then this is NOT the place for you. You want to go to River Legacy park in the Arlington area for perfect little trails. These trails are rugged terrain that are long, hot and dry. Perfect for a great mountain bike ride. The available picnic tables and break area are nice enough and most riders don't expect much when riding good trails, we just bring what we need and most of the time break at our personal vehicles. Everyone there seemed very nice and helpful if they thought you were in trouble or needed a helping hand. Great place for an adventure - you can also hike the biking trails if you like, but keep your eyes and ears open for the riders. Well kept and clean - there is also Little Pete's here for a good lunch break if you need one. And no need to worry about the cops - unless you have something to hide.
