The nature views are colorful and it is tucked behind a neighborhood that makes you feel as if you are not in DFW anymore. If you enjoy boating they also have a dock area as well as a pavilion to bring your picnic baskets or cooler etc. They have a main entrance where they check you in but it is a free park to the public. There's also a cute marina café and other things to explore. Come enjoy and get your nature on now that the weather is cooling off.

This is a huge acreage, beautiful park. Quiet little roads where families can go picnic, walk,…read moredrive dirt bikes, and four wheelers, etc. Unfortunately, it gets such a low rating by me because the front gate is nearly impossible to consistently get through. The credit card machine frequently doesn't work, then it would only accept exact change of a five dollar bill, which is never received well by the machine. The amount of times that my family has driven here to try and go to the park only to have to return home because we could not gain entrance. Currently there are FIVE CARS all in line at the entrance trying to get it! The drivers are all out of their vehicles and very frustrated. Also, while there are a porta potties in many places, the only proper bathroom is at the entrance. The women's room door is broken, so you really just go to the restroom with the door wide open! All that to say, this is an amazing park that needs much better maintenance.

This is a very suburban paved trail. The trail itself is well maintained. It's wide enough for…read morebikers and walkers to share and when we went, the grass on either side of the trail was recently mowed. There are a few areas where the trail crosses over the creek and in these places we did see a good amount of trash (come on, people!) but those were the only areas looking anything short of pristine. You could probably walk this entire trail in one day, but having kids who like to stop and explore every 10 feet, we split the walk over two days, the first day walking from the trailhead at the fire station off Davis to Smithfield Rd. and the second day covering Smithfield to Creekridge Dr., which is about where the John Barfield trail ends and the Little Bear Creek trail begins. We did not explore the trail East of Davis Blvd. so I cannot comment on that. From the starting point of the fire station, heading west, the trail is bordered by foliage on one side and houses on the other. There are large power lines lining the trail. It might as well be a walk down a neighborhood sidewalk. West of Smithfield, the trail does escape the housing developments for a bit and is lined by dense trees on either side. It offers very little shade, but it nevertheless a pretty walk. If it had been that way the for the entire trail, I would have given John Barfield 4 stars, but the other portions of the trail are just too suburban and sterile. It's a place to exercise, but frankly, this is no nature walk. This trail is a great feature for those who live within walking distance, but others will likely not find it to be worth the drive. FYI: the google app on my iPhone led us to a neighborhood near the trail off Davis. The correct location for the main trailhead (which is actually in the center of the trail) is at the fire station at Davis and Shadywood Ln.

So in Keller, North Richland Hills, Hurst, Colleyville, Grapevine, Southlake and Fort Worth there's…read morea pretty good network of trails. These trails are typically wide sidewalks, suitable for walking, running or cycling. While I'm fond of the Keller trails, they lack (peaceful) connectivity to the larger system of trails in Tarrant Co. I say peaceful, because while Rufe Snow Blvd has a wide sidewalk that can get you to the John Barfield Trail, it's not the most pleasant of of routes (I take Cat Mountain to North Tarrant Pky to get off Rufe Snow). That being said, once you get on the trail (you can pick it up near Rufe Snow and North Tarrant Pky (or near Keller-Smithfied Rd and North Tarrant Pky if you use the Cat Mtn bypass) it is quite peaceful. On the Barnfield Trail you can walk or ride, in relative peace, (almost) all the way to Grapevine (via the Cottonbelt) if you choose. On this day, I did. I started my walk on the John Barfield Trail, just south of North Tarrant Pky near Keller-Smithfield Rd. Very peaceful place to walk. A little lacking on facilities (water/restrooms), but those can be found further along the trail (Pleasant Run Soccer Complex in Colleyville) or at businesses near the trail. Do bring water though, as it's easier than detouring off the trail. The trail winds through neighborhoods, eventually ending up at the Cotton Belt trail (near Precinct Line Rd). From here, you can get all the way to Grapevine, but the trail peters out at Highway 26 (Coleyville Blvd). If there's a good trail into Grapevine (from here), I have yet to discover it. The Harry Moss Trail is a hike/mountain bike trail maintained by DORBA (Dallas Off Road Bicycle…read moreAssociation) and part of the larger Harry Moss Park. It is located off of Greenville Avenue just north of Walnut Hill. Access is through the parking lot of Buckeye Liquor down a non paved road. Being new to mountain, or since we're in flat country, off road biking I was a little apprehensive about the whole experience. This trail was recommended by several sources as being more newbie friendly. It consists of several connected trails through mostly forested land. The trails are "single track" which means one-way. Bikers travel in a counterclockwise direction, hikers clockwise. It's safer that way. For the less experienced, there are numerous bypasses. More experienced bikers can tackle more technical routes. Each trail is assigned a color and, from what I could tell, the Blue Trail is the beginning. While I have logged many, many miles on my bike cruising around White Rock Lake, I found that this off road gig was ten times more challenging. And, by challenging, I mean by the time I was finished I was whipped. Like most parks of this nature, it is closed after a rain. But the DORBA website is really quick to spread the word. DORBA, a volunteer organization, maintains most if not all such parks. Their workdays are listed on their website and they welcome volunteers. DORBA also hosts numerous clinics and competitions. Unlike some of the pictures listed here, I found the property to be very well maintained. Not a bit of litter did I see. Oh, and by the way, the DWF area is consistently recognized by outside sources as having some of the best off road trails in the country.

Campion Trails is a walking/biking trail that runs parallel to the Trinity River in Irving. It…read morestretches from Las Colinas all the way to Valley Ranch. For this review, I'm going to highlight all the areas where you can park and enter the trail. My Overall Rating - 5 Stars (Atmosphere, Trail, Return) Atmosphere - The trail is a wonderful, well shaded path which is populated with a good mix of cyclists, runners, roller bladers, and even families. It's one of my favorite places in the city, because it takes you away from the concrete jungle and into a lush, green, natural hideaway. 2 Stars. Trail - Here are the trail entrances where you can park your car and enter into Campion Trails starting from North to South. Sam Houston Trail Park - 101 I-635, Irving, TX 75038. This entrance is at 161 and Valley View. It's a good location if you want to start north and go down. Also, it has the only outhouse (that I know of). I've never used it but just know it's there. TW Richardson Grove - 101 Lyndon B Johnson Fwy, Irving, TX 75063. Right off the exit for George Bush Hwy off I635, this area has a covered patio that's perfect for gatherings for picnics and cookouts. La Vallita Park - 1 Camino Rio, Irving, TX 75039. This park is in the La Villita neighborhood. It was two playgrounds for kids, lots of shade from trees, and a covered patio. Rio Vista Park - 2 Barcelona, Irving, TX 75039. Also located in La Villita. This park has a basketball court, playground, and a covered patio with grills. There are no parking lots, but you can park along Barcelona, Campion Trails Park - 5950 Riverside Dr, Irving, TX 75039. This parking lot is next to the Irving Police Station. Needless to say, it's safe to park your car here. Birds Fort Trail Park - 5756 Riverside Dr, Irving, TX 75039. This is the BEST entrance to Campion Trails. Not only is there plenty of parking, but there are several covered patios, and it overlooks the Trinity River. Paws Colinas Dog Park - 1300 California Crossing Rd, Irving, TX 75039. This is a great dog park. It's really not a place to park and enter Campion Trail, just know it connects. California Crossing Park - 5198 Riverside Dr, Irving, TX 75039. This is the end (or beginning) of Campion Trails. Start here if you want to start biking north towards Valley Ranch/Coppell. Let's go! 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. I live in La Villita so my entry way is through the two parks. I hope that after reading this review, you'll be inspired to check out one of my favorite trails in all of DFW. 1 Star.

The City of Lewisville Texas built a beautiful park, across the street from the stately city hall,…read moreand named it Wayne Ferguson Plaza. It was named after Wayne Ferguson, a former mayor with a true git-r-done attitude. We love the events that are held at the plaza, particularly the Sounds of Lewisville Concert Series. They bring in bands that are based locally and from farther cities. Always enjoyable and appreciated. We couldn't be happier that the concert series has been brought back this year. Having outdoor events lifts our spirits as we move back to life before the pandemic.
