It wasn't too busy that we could have just walked in on a Tuesday late evening. We got seated right away. We saw lots of pick up to-go traffic while dining. We did the Prix Fixe meal. We both chose the samosa veggie and samosa Keema (lamb) to try each others but we both chose medium spiced chicken tikka marsala. OMG that was not medium spice but fire. I was sweating while trying to eat it. It was good with the Garlic naan bread. We choose the kheer for our dessert (rice pudding). The dessert was a little on the dry side and not enough liquid for me but I liked that it had actual pistachios in it. Service was as good. Why the three stars, I've had better Indian food for cheaper but I guess they treated like a little fancy restaurant. I just think these are more traditional Indian dishes that it doesn't have to be expensive but you can try it yourself and tell me what you think. [44R,2026]

However because Indian food has complex flavors in general, I feel like fancy chefs tasting version was less impressive than other cuisines (bc Indian food is already sho good lol). Still this was really delicious, like legit the best Indian food I've ever had for sure for sure. Some notes on food: - pumpkin & coconut shorba SOOOOO GOOD... i've had starter broths and consummes but this was probably my favorite, it was warm and hearty and flavorful. - jackfruit: decided to give this a try and it was most definitely worth the try.... not sure how tf they cooked this but it was so good - lobster tail: cooked to perfection but more importantly the sago and the sauce were very delicious. i told sam he could have most of da lobster but i just wanted more sauce - then when I was thinking i was pretty full they gave us these 4 dishes. the naan(??) was just ok a lil too doughy but holy the dal moradabadi was so good just on its own too - makhan malai: SO FAT AND HUGE AND JIGGLY LOL. at first the saffron & cardamom flavors were a little too sudden but it grew on me almost instantly and the texture is actually godly like so airy and soft and whipped as hell. I could've had another fat bowl of it but also it was comical how much they gave lol.

The starters were the pumpkin soup and the blue cheese naan. The soup was very yummy and had a nice flavor. The blue cheese naan was very potent. For the starters we chose the tofu and the potato sphere. The tofu was crispy and had a really nice texture. Never had tofu like that before. The potato sphere was also super interesting. I wish it had a filling though. The middle dish we got was the yogurt kebab. The texture of the yogurt was very interesting. The sauce was pretty spicy but again another dish that was super interesting. For mains we got the lamb and the paneer. The paneer texture was good and the sauce was very yummy as well. The lamb was very tender and was very delicious. The roti it came with was also so soft and delicious. The green chutneys were my favorite. The chicken kulcha and black daals were also good. Personally loved the black daal and the garlic naan the most. I think these two dishes could have had more flavor. For dessert we had the black rice cake with the rice pudding. The black rice cake flavor wasn't my favorite. The rice pudding was great. They also surprised us with an extra birthday dessert which was the saffron foam dessert. I really liked this one and the flavor was super interesting. Service was great all night. The only thing throwing me off was the b health rating. If you're looking for an upscale Indian restaurant to celebrate something this one is great.

I had to use both arms to break it apart and it hurt to bite into. Whoever is warming up food in the back needs some guidance in this regard. Rest of the thali was decent enough. Payasum (dessert) looked sus. Avoided that completely. Coffee at the end was a scam. Annapurna Bhavan doesn't need to be more popular. There always seems to be a line, even at dinner…read moreon a weekday, despite being in one of the least lovely parts of Manhattan. There is a reason for the line: Annapurna Bhavan is good. It's not amazing good, but it's better than any of the Saravanaas locations in NYC. The food here is commendably non-greasy, like what amma might make at home. And the decor, AC, and clean bathroom also make the overall experienced far more civilized than the competition. The masala dosa is crisp and light, filled with a basic, but well made aloo masala, mostly just turmeric-tinged potato and black mustard seed. No nuts, peas, dal or even alliums, I don't think. (Please double check on the alliums if you follow a Jain diet.) The accompanying sambar is thick with dal. I personally enjoy a slightly soupier consistency, with more vegetables and more tamarind -- but of course that's completely a stylistic preference. The FIL loved it. I missed the tomato chutney that often comes with dosa. (It's summer for goodness sakes! I want my tomatoes!) There was standard issue coconut chutney on the side. Sambar vada was well made, a generous portion made with the same thick sambar that comes with dosa. We also tried the bhindi masala, which was so-so. Flavors were balanced, but a good portion of the okra in the dish was burnt and rubbery, unfortunately. Not sure what happened there. Drinks: Rose milk was VERY sweet. (I wish I'd thought to ask for another glass of plain milk to dilute it.) They have a brief, but decent wine list including whatever crisp white wine the Pardner ordered (guessing it was a sauvignon blanc). I frankly don't love alcoholic beverages with Indian vegetarian food -- maybe I feel too sacrilegious -- but if you do, Annapurna Bhavan appears to have a full bar.
