Mullets opened up awhile back at the site of the old West Towne Pub. Reviews have invited comparison with the Des Moines Mullets and perhaps some rough early service and concerns. If my Dad were writing reviews, he might have agreed with those comments as I had to talk him into coming here for breakfast this morning, after he'd already been here couple times previously. I thought our breakfast was a decent 4 star experience in that it was better than OK, but with no real "Oh Wow" moments. Observations: - I didn't see much difference in the interior layout of Mullets compared to the old West Towne Pub. Maybe the walls had different things, but everything else seemed to be in a familiar place, including the multiple screens for sports. - The menu is certainly more expansive than the old place and at least for breakfast a little hard to navigate around all the specialty offerings. Hashbrowns seem to be one of their things, and finding a straight order of bacon and eggs required a little digging. - Service was just fine: friendly and prompt in both order taking, food delivery, and the check. - Prices seemed Ames reasonable. But it is an Iowa thing to complain about prices. - My breakfast sliders (on with bacon the other sausage) were very good and just the right amount of food, considering how many times Dad, David, and I have been out to eat over the last couple days. - My 96 year-old Dad still has quite an appetite as he went "whole hog" with eggs, ham, and a full stack of pancakes. He must have liked it as he almost cleaned his plate. - David only ordered hash browns and orange juice, of which he enjoyed. When we finished, I asked Dad if he'd come back, with the answer being yes. I guess things had improved here in his eyes. The place as also busy enough including some folks that he hadn't seen for awhile. I look forward to this Mullet's being around when I'm back in Ames around late March. read more

Went on a non-game-day Saturday in mid-October around 9am. Not very crowded, staff were friendly and available, very pleasant and low-key atmosphere. The menu was a game-day limited menu but the breakfast food choices available were more than enough. Would highly recommend The Morning Mullet and their standard Breakfast Tacos. Portions were exactly perfect, not too little and no need to take-away. The gravy they use on their biscuits and gravy is the authentic sawmill type, which I haven't had much outside of the South, and it was fantastic. The Loaded Bloody Mary is also recommended, though their standard coffee was also plentiful and good. Overall great choice and an asset among breakfast-out options in Ames, we will definitely go back soon for a similar repeat visit. read more

They've only been open a few days and are still trying to get the process down- but it was good food and good service. I had the farmers burger and it was a ton of meat. We had to wait around 20 minutes due to the heavy traffic and I think it was worth it. read more

Every time we've driven by it's said it was open but all doors are locked and a sign on the door claims they close at 3pm. At least update your hours on your website to correctly reflect your hours. Good luck getting college students to work/eat there between 7am-3pm. read more

Great server though she had to struggle with the kitchen. Seems poor management as they were out of numerous items (all I can think was what were they going to do the next day, Sunday?) and one of our party received the wrong order. Manager was very apologetic and comped two orders of the seven. Hopefully they can get things straightened out quickly. read more

For me, this is a go-to breakfast place. Love it on Saturday...or especially Sunday after church. But I recommend you stay away on Sundays, cause then there is a shorter wait for me ‍ very popular, and that is deserved. read more

Soooo long story short. It started out a tiny bit rough, food quality and service. But I would say the last couple times in the past week that we have come here it was outstanding! I can visually see that the staff has picked up the pace they are much better. The food at first was not what I was expecting. But they have found their rhythm. The bacon chrizo hash brown, cinnamon roll pancake, chicken fried steak, the breakfast nachos just to name a few! OUTSTANDING!! We enjoy breakfast. Haven't had lunch or dinner. I think people forget that they started from the beginning, new staff, new menu, and they got this all put together for US ames people. We got to give them an another chance!! We went the 2nd night they were open. The wait wasn't too bad for a party of 6. We waited about 20 minutes and were seated. Our drinks came quickly but the food took a little longer. We expected that, with it being their 2nd night open and everyone was still learning. I got the BLTA and pasta salad. Very good! Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. 4 of for lunch. Sat quickly. Took 20 min to get our appetizer & lunch shortly after. Cheese curds were soggy like they sat waiting to be delivered a long time. had to request plates for appetizers & they never picked up dirty dishes after we were done eating appetizers or at the end of the meal. Small table was crowded & should not have been. place was busy when we walked in but emptied soon after. Steak requested medium rare was well done & server didn't return to check on it soon enough. Salmon salads were blah. Salmon dry. Never hot apple juice requested but was on the bill & took 15 minutes to find the supervisor to get it off the bill when we were ready to leave. Lots of opportunities for improvement & I sent email to the restaurant but never heard anything back. Will I go back? Not soon. waitress was nice but clueless. The food was pretty mediocre. My bacon was extremely greasy to the point that it was soggy. The staff is nice, but wait times are ridiculous. It probably took about 30-45 minutes to get our food. I ordered the avocado toast.... The restaurant is cute and nicely decorated but the food and service do not make up for that. read more

I was really looking forward to a new breakfast place in Ames. I was not impressed at all. Super greasy and they need to figure out what to do with keeping the food hot when it's ready. The runners took the hot food out of the window and set it in trays and left it there as they worked. read more

Update: Shoutout GM Robert! We Robert! He's holding this whole thing together after this experience below. Yeah definitely wait a few months until they get things figured out. "Kitchen backed up" would be fine if the service was great, but we've been sitting here for nearly 2 hours, in addition to our 30 min wait to be seated. The manager is doing well trying to resolve issues but the staff isn't helping any situation. "I warned you guys" really doesn't make the customers feel heard. We had to ask multiple times for refills and just felt like a burden to be there. The servers congregated near the drink station and that's great that they're all friends, but it certainly doesn't help the waiting customers feel like they're being taken care of when we're waiting so darn long for every step. No updates on where our ticket was until we asked, then it seemed like a big deal and saw them looking at us and chatting :/ maybe put up a divider there so they can still have a break space to be friendly but they're shielded from the dining space? Worst breakfast ever, Overcooked cold eggs, cold sausage, hash browns,and bacon,forgot my toast, biscuits and gravy was inedible and ice cold. Server was nice but only took our order and gave us our check, never checked if all was good at our table, it was also so cold the entire time. I will never go back. read more

We have visited Mullets in DSM many times and have loved it! Chose to try the Ames location today as it's closer to where we live. So disappointed. Server took drink orders, brought waters and soda and disappeared for 10-15 min. Never brought the kids menus we asked for or the bar drinks we ordered. I finally went to ask another nearby server if we could get kids menus and if our bar drinks would ever come. She did go look for our server who finally brought the kids menus and finally took our food orders. Took about 30 minutes to get the mimosa flight I ordered. When food came the Benedict flight I ordered had a nearly raw egg on one of the Benedict's and I ended up have to scrape the egg off to the side because the egg white was so raw it was still clear. In general the food was ok, but still not the level of food - and nowhere near the level of service - that we've had in DSM. They were not packed while we were there. Open tables throughout the 90+ minutes we were there. Safe to say all future visits will be to DSM, no matter how long the waitlist is there. Bright spot in Ames was that Chris was friendly when I called the night before about making a reservation. He was there when we came in today and made sure staff at the door had a spot for us. read more

I'm putting a five because I see the potential it can have. Things that can be improved: making the customer FEEL like you WANT them to come eat there. The energy was ok but for Sunday morning shifts especially with an isu game in town, it should be above and beyond. Customers feed off the restaurants energy and reciprocates in generous tips and awesome reviews. It felt like everyone was there just to be there. Also I noticed a family with small kids looking restless while waiting for food so bringing out a couple small fruit cups would go a long way. Happy kids means happy parents. Now add phenomenal service and you now have amazing yelp reviews. After serving for so many years, it's hard not to analyze restaurant service when you go in as a patron and you see so many steps not being taken to ensure a return trip to the restaurant. Ordered a spicy marg. Gnarly. Tasted like vomit and a splash of Fanta. Went up to the bar to send it back. Bartender saw me head up there and ignored me. A nice server stopped by and went to grab him. Ordered a BLT. Burnt to a crisp. Extra charge. The best thing about the place was the server! Very nice gal! We were told it would be 45 minutes to wait and we waited a total of 1hr and 30 minutes just to be seated. I got an orange juice that didn't taste good at all and had floaters in it. We waited another hour just for our food to come out. My sisters was cold, my boyfriend's burrito was covered in grease he couldn't even eat it, and the food quality was just not worth the wait. Nothing like the mullets in Des Moines. We had many people walk past our table and tell us good luck because they were leaving and noticed how long we had been sitting there. We left and went to Dollar Tree, came back 30 minutes later and still waited inside for about another 10 minutes before being seated. Once seated we were ignored for over 20 minutes as the place cleared out from the morning rush and we decided to walk out just after 1pm hungry and annoyed as no one had told us they were coming to take our order, took order for drinks or anything of that nature. read more

My wife and I had breakfast here several days ago. Things started out rather badly but were somewhat redeemed as the meal progressed. We arrived a few minutes after the 7AM opening time. A sign indicated the restaurant was open but when I opened the door everything was dark inside. I asked somebody inside whether we could sit on the patio and he said yes. A few minutes later, two waitresses (one being trained by the other) came out to ask if we wanted something to drink. We ordered coffee. About five minutes later we each got a cup, but there was no creamer or sugar (nor were we asked whether we wanted any). We asked for that, and some time later that came--but there were no spoons. Another five minutes later, those came. I ordered the country fried steak and eggs, and my wife ordered Eggs Benedict with crab. It took awhile to get these. My wife quickly discovered that although her eggs were hot, the crab was stone cold. She told this to the waitress, who seemed unsure of what to do. My wife told her to never mind. There were also no potatoes with the eggs, but this didn't bother her unduly. Then she had a bite of the Hollendaise sauce and was appalled; she said it was unlike any Hollendaise sauce she had ever tasted, and she couldn't eat it. My wife said she would just eat what she could and leave the rest over, but then somebody else, unbidden, brought out a new plate of the Eggs Benedict with crab. This one was completely hot, contained hash brown potatoes, and had actual Hollendaise sauce, not whatever my wife was originally served. Since we had not mentioned potatoes or the sauce, we could only conclude that the folks in the kitchen knew there was something wrong with the original order. But at least my wife eventually wound up with a decent order of Eggs Benedict with crab. I give the kitchen staff credit for, on their own initiative, correcting a problem, but it would have been better if the problematic food had not left the kitchen in the first place. I had somewhat better luck with my order, which was good but nothing particularly memorable. If I had to guess, I would say that my country fried steak came from a freezer rather than being hand-breaded, but it wasn't bad by any means. I do think it would be nice if they served some kind of toast with this dish, however. Bottom line: this is a relatively new place (I think it's been open a couple of months) and may still be working out some kinks. The wait staff seems friendly and you get the sense that they want to do a good job. However, they're not there yet, and even if we weren't going to move out of Ames in the near future, I doubt we would return. I hope things improve. read more

No reason to return. Went with daughter and Grandkids, many open tables when we arrived. Waitress was new, so kept returning to clarify orders (not a huge deal- we all have to start somewhere). Took well over an hour to actually get our food, which for some reason was beyond cold. Waitress checked on us before we'd even taken a bite as we were getting kids' food cut and having to ask for all the condiments. The poached eggs on my benedict seemed like they came straight out of the fridge. The bacon in my daughter's omelette was burned black. Husband's breakfast burrito was cold and said the gravy was nasty. Not only did we not see our waitress to complain to, we'd already waited an hour and didn't have the luxury to wait another hour to get our meals warmed. Crawling with flies, MULLETS restaurant lacks basic table amenities, including condiments, complete sets of silverware, and matching cups (using a variety of Starbucks-branded and vintage thrift store coffee mugs) or dishes. There was a 45-minute wait with dozens of tables 4- and 6-top tables available (empty). We waited 20 minutes for water and 50 minutes for our food. None of the 7 other tables in the bar side of the restaurant had food on their tables; they were all waiting impatiently, too. When we ansked for ann update, the waitress disappeared. Our first trip wasn't great. A couple of Saturdays ago in the evening we got there around 545. Plenty of time we thought to eat and get to the hockey game on time. Sat on patio. It wasn't that busy. Learned they had the bartender working the patio area alone. We ordered drinks and food. Service was slow. Didn't get food until 700. They apologized that kitchen was delayed. Missed one of our orders completely. Not sure if staffing issues or process. Will give one more try as it's super convenient when we are in Ames and we've had great experiences at the Ankeny location. read more
