I was in the area with a friend and happened on this place. The special was fried fish and omg. A huge piece and prepared perfectly. They also had FRESH crawfish. I met the owner, Hoyt and not a more friendly person could you find. I shared pics of Colorado mud bugs with Hoyt. Then I met the boss!!!!! Awesome folks. But... the real shock was the starter of 3 CHEESE CRAWFISH DIP -$16.99, It is a total rip off. The portion was so small. It did not even fill the small container - 1 & 3/4 inch high.. See photo. There was crawfish, a sauce with a lump of cheese on top. The taste was good. It came with 8 pcs of bread. There was barely enough of it for two or three pcs. This restaurant is combined with the revel Patio grill which is interesting. Revel has live music that you typically have to pay a cover charge for. The crawfish was pretty good. I also tried their Carolina reapers wings and could barely taste the seasoning. We also tried their supreme pizza and it's pretty thin crust. It was pretty good. read more

It's been awhile since I wrote a review. Here's the good, the bad and the ugly for Mud Bugs. The Good: The Boudin Balls are amazing!!! Like really really amazing! My wife and I both had the Cajun Sampler. The shrimp and corn chowder is also amazing. The gumbo and etouffee were also very good. The Bad: The hostess was terrible. She barely spoke to us. The host/hostess should be a beaming ray of sunshine! They provide the first impression of a restaurant and when they don't speak and seem grumpy it's not good. More Bad: have the drink menus at the table. Also, have someone clean the tables when guests leave. We sat next to a dirty table for over 30 minutes. It didn't bother me but it makes the establishment seem messy. The Ugly: We sat at our table 8 minutes before someone even acknowledged us. 2 more minutes and I was going to leave. We watched another party get seated and they sat there for at least 10 minutes before they left. Nobody even said hello to them. This is absolutely unacceptable. After they left, nobody even picked up the menus (see my Bad comment). Simple attention to details will make you or break you. In summary, the food is really good but the service and attention to detail is not. To the owners/management, please take this as constructive criticism/feedback. We want Mud Bugs to succeed and we're very excited about the new location. I know you just opened and you're working out the kinks but please address your service issues. read more

Stop what you are doing and proceed to your Cajun heaven! Service was engaging and fun! The drinks were on point! We shared the crawfish dip on reco by Manny, and it did not disappoint! The crostini were fresh French bread buttered and griddle toasted. The dip had lots of crawfish and the perfect combination of creamy goodness and flavor. I got the catfish atchafalaya...And I'm from southern Mississippi about an hour and a half from Nola, and this was some of the best catfish I've had in years and years!!! The fish was fresh and tender, meaty but still light. The coating had amazing cornmeal crunch with a little heat! I had the crawfish étouffée over the rice/under the catfish, and it was a nice and dark, rich sauce. I really could not have asked for more! Rating low for a few reasons. I placed an ordered online for 5 lbs of crawfish as well as boudin balls. I asked the girl over the phone how many boudin balls came with the appetizer, and she responded "5." She even doubled down and said yes when I repeated 5 just to be sure. So upon arrival, I ask for my order and the girl tells me to check my order to make sure I had everything, which I appreciated and did so. Then this other girl walks up (short, short curly blonde hair) says hi, and as I'm checking out everything, I notice there were only 3 boudin balls in the box. I tell the girls confused "when I ordered I asked how many boudin balls it came with and the girl said 5, but there's only 3" to which the blonde girl shakes her head and says "no, sorry." So then I say, "well the girl I spoke with said 3 so.." and sort of trailed off just because I didn't want to start anything and to see if they'd give me a reason, but the short blonde girl just shook her head again and said no. Then as I was looking through the crawfish, I noticed there weren't any corn or potatoes, even though online it says it comes with both (as seen in my pic). So I asked about that too, to which they again just said "no, it doesn't." I'm not sure if she's the manager or what, but I definitely think she could've been more friendlier or just explain more in depth to my questions because I wasn't even sure why she came up to us in the first place. After that, I just said thank you and left. Now that I'm home and was able to thoroughly check the crawfish, they're SO dirty!! Like it's actually disgusting, I've never seen such dirty crawfish and I'm from SETX. So not sure who's in charge of cleaning them, but this is incredibly disappointing and gross. At least make them look like they were cleaned a little, but this is horrible. Also, I did try one that wasn't as dirty and it definitely be seasoned more. So overall, bad experience, bad crawfish, and bad service, and I didn't even dine in . Would not recommend coming here for a crawfish spot. read more

I lived in Little Elm, when the original location was still operating. I was back in town for the day and decided to go by their new location to pick up food. The new location is much larger, which is nice, but location is not great. The food will not bad, but it is definitely nowhere near as good as it used to be. Absolutely terrible experience from start to finish. The owner was shockingly rude, unprofessional, and outright aggressive. After noticing an extra charge on my bill, I calmly brought it to her attention. Although she removed it, she did so with clear irritation and then stood there staring at me in a hostile, confrontational way while handing back the corrected bill. I then told the owner that my friend and I were paying for our individual meals separately, which I had told our waitress earlier. I further explained that our waitress took an incredibly long time to checkin on our table, over 20 minutes. My friend had to leave and pick up her daughter from an art class 5 minutes away but would be returning to pay her bill and order a to-go meal. As the owner walked away, she continued glaring at me with a visibly angry, almost menacing expression. I pointed out-calmly-that this was poor customer service, which she then escalated the situation. She immediately stormed back to my table in a threatening manner, raised her voice, and told me that I was a poor customer and that I needed to pay my bill and never come back. The entire interaction felt incredibly hostile and uncomfortable, especially given that I had done nothing more than question an incorrect charge and shared that I was splitting the bill with my friend. I then paid my bill by leaving cash on our table. Subsequently, our waitress returned to the table and scoffed, saying, 'We have your friend on camera, and she'll be charged with stealing.' Within the following two minutes, my friend returned with her daughter to pay her portion of the bill. l've dined at many places and have never been treated this way. No customer should feel intimidated or unsafe over a simple billing issue. The behavior was completely unacceptable and deeply unprofessional. I ultimately felt the situation was serious enough to report to the police. I strongly recommend avoiding this establishment if you expect basic courtesy or respect. read more

Had dinner here last night. The atmosphere is improved at the new location over the old Mudbugs, but the food was not nearly as good. My main was fried catfish with red beans and rice. The red beans and sauce tasted like it was out of a can or store bought mix. The sauce was salty and bland with more of a generic meat sauce taste and not much cajun spice/flavor. The andouille sausage bits were small, rubbery, and very overcooked, with no flavor. Beans appeared to be from a can. Rice was mushy. The catfish had decent flavor, but was clearly overcooked, as the crust was dark brown and brittle. A piece of "jalapeno cornbread" was included. It did not have the cornmeal taste or texture of cornbread and looked and tasted more like a savory muffin with a couple of small pieces of jalapeno inside. Ordered the cheesecake with pecan praline sauce topping for dessert. The sauce was tasty, but the cheesecake itself was obviously from a Jello or similar brand "no bake" box mix, and extremely underwhelming. The total cost of the meal for myself and my girlfriend (I did not review her food, only my own) was $70.00, plus tip, for two mains, a soda, a water, and a dessert. Definitely not worth the price. Service was slow with an unconcerned attitude. I had to wait 10+ minutes for a beverage refill more than once. At one point, the server took my drink for a refill and was gone several minutes before wandering back by the table and suddenly remembering that he'd taken my glass, going back to the refill area, and returning with the refilled glass a couple of minutes later. Worst was the men's room. Smelled very bad, like it hadn't been cleaned in years. The urinal was out of order, paper towel dispenser was empty, and the hand dryer was very underpowered and shut off after 2-3 seconds, so I was continually having to move my hands away from the dryer and back to get it to restart. VERY disappointing compared to the old location, especially the food. read more

Since the move to close their restaurant and move into the kitchen at Revel I am sad to say it's not the same..... not even close. I used to LOVE Mudbugs! Why they did not open a new stand alone restaurant I don't know, but what I do know is the food is a shadow of what it was. Had the shrimp Poorboy, it was over flowing with perfectly fried shrimp at the old location. Now it's half the shrimp and they are using much smaller shrimp. I asked the waiter if it was the same cooks, he said yes . However I can't imagine a restaurant merging menus and keeping all the cooks. Soo sad but it's no longer worth anything. We did NOT have a good experience. The patty melt was just a cheese burger with one kind of cheese, no onions & I had to SAW my burger with a knife. The crawdads were re-boiled (they should have told us they did not get a shipment because of the ice), the muffuletta had minimal olive tampaneade and fried bologna (who puts fried bologna on a muffuletta?). Well here goes: Went there twice as I like to give places the benefit of the doubt especially when they are under new establishment and I'm a Nawlin's girl so I was hoping this place would be my new eatery with similar food from home- BUT it's a NO for me! First time, the service was awful. We were seated and the waitress took 20 minutes to come take our order, poor girl was trying to be so nice and yes it was a Friday night and they were in the midst of just opening a night ago so she apologized that they were all over the place. It was obvious they hadn't been trained much or ready for a busy night. Ok cool, but then after sitting there for over an hour and no food and no more waiter visits, we left! Soooo another night looking for some quick Southern food on date night without the kids and without wanting to cook it myself that night, we went over and was seated quickly and served-take heed, it was empty in capacity that night. The food came out hot and fast but the looks of my plate was terrible. I've never seen catfish come in the smallest nuggets and onion rings had no onion in them, just fried flour crunch. My husband's pasta was like an ice cream scoop of food and he said it taste like I rather not say. We started to call the waiter over and ask for our money back or a remake but we just bust out laughing and ate it and said that's what we get for going back. Choosing to be happy and still have a good night, we left for drinks and still enjoyed date night to never return to this establishment ever again! We got 5lbs of crawfish and the top ones were good but after we got about a third of the way done we had to throw most of them out because they were dirty, overcooked, and not juicy. We were looking for a fun cajun place to celebrate mardi gras and ended up at Mud Bugs. No mardi gras decorations. When we arrived, they were having a concert in the front so were told we had to go eat on the back open porch. A bit rustic. Our biggest issue was that just about everyone at the bar area was smoking. And smoke carries, so we inhaled cigarette and cigar smoke the entire night. Not conducive to an enjoyable meal. Note to management, you may want to warn people before going to the back that they may have to enjoy their meal amongst a bunch of cigar/cigarette smokers. We ordered drinks which were cold and good. We started off with a cheesy crab appetizer which was very good. Again, trying to enjoy through the smoke. We both ordered a variety of things, half shrimp po boy. Small, but very tasty. Chowder, good. Gumbo also good. And Ettoufe. Service was good, although we never received water refills and our glasses were empty by the time we left. The food was good, we just couldn't enjoy it in the all the smoke. If you enjoy eating your meal in that type of smoke filled environment then its a great place. Otherwise, I don't receommend simply due to the smoke. read more

Went with wife on a Saturday about 5PM. By 6:00 it was pretty full. Seated quickly by a pleasant, fast, efficient & very knowledgeable waitress. Not too noisy, so we could visit. Ordered boudin balls appetizer, shrimp tacos & catfish Atchafalaya. Served quickly, food was hot and very tasty. Had just the right amount of spice without being too hot. Cheesecake after was rich yet light. Delicious. The only bad thing was the margarita. Weak and ultra sweet sugary, in a large goblet. Myeh (but then, you don't go to a Cajun restaurant for the drinks...). I'd skip the fancy cocktails next time. We saw several going straight for the big loads of mudbugs (crawfish). I've had them before - not my cup of tea, but they looked pretty good. Overall, a nice diverse menu with a wide selection of Cajun food, served quickly in a pleasant atmosphere. Moderately priced. I'll just order a beer next time. One last thing - lots of parking (it's in a strip mall area), but if you're coming in from the south, up FM423, you have to turn left at an intersection with no light, and the traffic on a later Saturday afternoon was so bad it took forever to turn, and very dangerous & hard to see oncoming traffic with oncoming opposite turn lane traffic blocking your view - be aware of possible access issues. read more

Went to the new location in Revel this last weekend. After waiting 10 min for a server and more for our drinks, we ordered food. Twenty minutes later, we still didn't have our food. All we ordered was gumbo. That should have been already cooked and ready to serve. At 25 minutes, I cancelled the order and the manager came over. We informed him of the situation and we left. This is not like the original Mud Bugs that was in Little Elm. The atmosphere, people, and service leave a lot to be desired. To top it off, they raised the prices substantially. Mud Bugs has been, and continues to be, one of my absolute favorite restaurants! It's a phenomenal family-run spot serving truly authentic South Louisiana food. They're always happy to accommodate special requests, which makes the experience even better. The staff has been wonderfully consistent over the years I've been dining here -- friendly, attentive, and always welcoming. Every visit feels like catching up with family, and the food never disappoints. They even have my Saints on during football season complete with volume!!! Highly recommend! read more

We were so excited to come to the location and UTTERLY DISAPPOINTED. The place is so LOUD that we could not hear the wait staff. We were also informed that if we were still there when the next band came on we would be charged $20 a person cover charge because we were in the building. (So slow service & now triple the cost). Decided to revisit Mudbugs while we were in the area. I have family from New Orleans, so I have basis for my review or their dishes. This is not a huge place. They seem to get a lot of take-out orders. We had Hush Puppies ($8), Corn bread ($1), two Seafood Platters where you select the main meats for the platter ($22 each). The food was delicious, as usual. I got fried oysters and shrimp, hubby got catfish and shrimp. All were excellently seasoned and not overly breaded. The shrimp were a very nice size and delicious. It had been a while since our last visit, but it was as good as I remembered. Other good choices are crawfish etouffee (not quite as good as Pappadeaux, but more reasonably priced), crawfish dip, Slap Yo Mama cajun pasta (has a little kick, but not overly spicy), Maw Maw's Shrimp and Corn Chowder (one of my favorites). The only miss to me is the Jambalaya, which I don't like the seasonings, but hubby thinks it's okay. Overall, great place to get some really good Cajun cooking. Gator Bites - had better Grilled Oysters - had one and done French Fries - typical Alfredo Pasta - never again as the sauce was so thin that it wouldn't coat the fettuccine at all Crawfish - it was fine as we knew the crawfish would be on the smaller size due to the season coming to an end and they don't offer a spicy level Bread Pudding - ridiculously sweet to where I could only eat three bites and I have a huge sweet tooth My friends recommended this place because it's the best in town. Crawfish season is finally upon us. So glad we have Nola style crawfish in Frisco! Came here to try it out and ordered 3 lbs to go. They only sell by increments of 3 or 5 lbs. Learned that when I tried to order just 2 lbs... thank goodness I had no choice but to get 3. I devoured all of it by myself and was sad to eat the last crawfish. Next time I'm definitely going to order 5 lbs lol. Since the season just started, the crawfish size is small-medium. There were only a couple larger ones but I'm not complaining. I'd like to come back and try out other items like the chargrilled oysters. I'll just need to control myself and try not to come back every other day lol.
