For years and years, this MTD shuttle went in a loop up and down State Street from Sola to Cabrillo. It ran every 30 minutes for most of the daylight hours. Until recently, they operated out of neat old-fashioned trolley-style buses. These were recently replaced with enclosed all-electric buses. I live a few blocks from the topmost Sola stop and would take this bus many a weekend if I were headed to the funk zone or the ocean. It's only $0.50 per ride and the price had remained that way for years. A great deal. State Street has been closed off and turned into a promenade-type area as of late. The change has displaced this beloved shuttle. Not sure of State Street's future, but I'd love to see this unique shuttle back in action, if even on another street like Chapala. Long live the Downtown Waterfront Shuttle!

I have been late multiple times because A) The bus arrives 10+ minutes late or B) The bus never arrived at all. Ive been to the bus stops early but had to pay for an Uber to class to make it to my exams on time because the bus never shows. Or you can grab an uber. The train station is small and quaint- but gets the job down. At the station there is a small building to purchase tickets, sit about and to use the bathroom. The bathroom only has a couple of stalls and they are locked- so get the password. You may also need to hold your nose, as smells like sewage- but at least there is a bathroom on the premises. Very limited seating outside, thus people were siting on the ground. Would be nice to have more cover seating outside. Parking exist onsite- but there is a fee for parking.

Unfortunately, it ended up being one of the more disappointing parts of the trip. The seating is tightly packed. I understand maximizing capacity, but at 6'6" it was not comfortable. We moved to the front right side where there is a sideways bench behind the driver, which offered more legroom. That felt like a smart move until we realized most of the sights being pointed out were on the left side of the trolley. It felt like about 80 percent of the tour was oriented that direction, which meant we were constantly twisting around and still missing details. If you book this tour, sit on the left side. The narration also felt disorganized. The driver mentioned he was reading the traffic flow incorrectly and ended up doing much of the route "backwards." Because of that, he would introduce a historical figure or landmark, then later circle back and partially repeat the same information when reaching his usual talking point. There was noticeable repetition and filler instead of a smooth, cohesive storyline. Midway through the tour, there is a stop at Mission Santa Barbara for about 15 minutes. While it is nice to get off and stretch your legs, 15 minutes is nowhere near enough time to meaningfully experience the mission. You can walk through the courtyard and take a few photos, but that is about it. The mission deserves more time than a quick pass through. In practice, the stop felt more like a checkbox than a real opportunity to explore. Another frustration was departure time. The 2:00 p.m. tour did not leave at 2:00. The driver waited past the scheduled time to see if additional passengers would join. When you are visiting from out of town and carefully stacking your schedule, those extra 10 to 15 minutes matter. Overall, for about $30 per person, I expected a more polished and better organized experience. We both left disappointed. If you want a meaningful introduction to Santa Barbara, you may be better off exploring key spots on your own at your own pace.

This station is at 224 Chapala Street and is a cute reddish brownish orange miniature station that serves the beach town really well. It looks kind of beach like, which is awesome, and because of this, it fits in well in Santa Barbara, which is a very sleepy town considering how crazy LA is. It closes for 3 hours a day, which is hilarious, from 11 till 2. Now that's a long lunch break! The Amtrak trains also stop here, and they have those beautiful archways and what not - it's amazing. On the way into the station, you'll be whisked past gorgeous beaches and over an amazing viaduct that literally crosses coves and beaches and rocks. It's an amazing part of the world and one which you should feel very lucky to live in. I always feel lucky to visit. They also have a Package Express service here.
