Great place for beginner ski lessons especially since they have a magic carpet for all the bunny slows so the kids can easily practice without being afraid of the lift. The instructors are pretty nice and both of my kids learned how to make turns and comfortable stop. The group lessons were for 3 hours though... so they were so tired and hungry afterwards! The restaurants nearby are a bit pricey but decent especially after a long day of skiing. read more

The mountain offers everything from mom runs, to terrain parks, to the more challenging runs for expert skiers. It wasn't crowded during our visit and there are two high-speed 6-person lifts, so the lines were short. We stayed at the Hyatt Place in Reno, that's only about 25 minutes away, and has a great free breakfast. The roads were clear, so it was any easy drive to the slopes from our hotel. I only ski at Mt Rose when I have a chance to do so on a discount, but I did ski here as a pass holder for nearly a decade. I just visited recently and I was shocked by how well they have maintained and continued expanding the resort. The amount of terrain Mt Rose offers is truly amazing. They have added several new runs and access to new areas that I have not seen before. Very impressed with how much terrain availability there is and how that helps skiers spread out across the mountain. I visited most recently on a Saturday and even on a holiday weekend, there were no lines! Score! This has also been a lackluster winter with not a ton of snow, yet the conditions were incredible and the entire mountain was open. Lift tickets here are expensive, but worth it. A season pass is the way to go if you plan on coming more than 4-5 days. If this was the closest resort to me, I would certainly be a pass holder. Would recommend the skiing and riding at Mt Rose. This is one of my fav family friendly ski resorts. Their magic carpet is great for beginners, this ski resort has plenty of runs for all levels, and parking is free. Like anything else, this place can be crowded but def not as bad as Heavenly or Northstar. Their lift ticket prices are creeping up but I do like that they offer am half day and pm half day tickets. Food at their Lodgepole Cafe can improve (their pizza is too thick and dough is too dense) and it would be helpful to offer a few more food options (protein plates or bowls). I have not tried Hela's Cantina yet. Staff are always nice. read more

Do not go to winter creek if you're new I made that mistake I had to go down an intermediate trail to get back to my car. I haven't seen the food yet or drinks mainly here for the skiing experience. Took kids lessons in Mt Rose but was disappointed. It is a super mess. The lessons are said to start at 9am, asked us to arrive 30mins or 15 mins earlier. However, you will be lucky if kids can get out to ski at 9:45-10am. Other parents waiting outside also complained this was a mess because it took a long time to get kids' skis and some coaches did not show up until very late. We arrived at 8:45am and waited until close to 10:30am and kids were still waiting for their skis. Waited there for more than one hour. Not organized and lack of management. They also lack of stuff. So disappointing. Also level 3 kids were still on magic carpet all day, no lift. My kid said it was crowded in the magic carpet ski area. Not recommended. Especially if you come in late November or early December. Maybe after December will be better choice. read more

I have had a season pass for several years. This year I just had a bad ankle sprain in October with at least torn ligaments and I decided I had better not ski this winter. I asked in advance to Mt. Rose Ski Mountain for a refund for my season pass because I have an ankle injury. Mt. Rise Ski Mountain then said they would not refund my season pass but they would consider letting me use my season pass instead next winter if I produced a doctor's note. So I went to Renown Hospital in Reno to try to get a note that I am unable to ski. The hospital then reevaluated and re-X-ray my ankle and the written report said I likely have a fractured ankle and torn ligaments. Next week I have appointments with an orthopedic surgeon in Reno to further evaluate my ankle. We actually then submitted two written and documented reports from Renown Hospital that clearly document my fractured ankle. Now Mount Rose Ski place will still not let me move my season pass to next season because these hospital reports do not explicitly say that I can't ski. So I have to try again this week to get another doctor's report that explicitly explains that I can't ski this season. The managers at Mt. Rose Ski Resort are true jackasses and it is clear they don't give a shit about their longtime customers. This is clear abuse from Mt. Rose Ski Mountain Management. They are assholes. read more

This review is specific to the Kids' Ski Lessons and is written to give parents a clear and honest account before entrusting their young children to this program. I enrolled my 6-year-old daughter in two days of ski lessons during our trip to Tahoe. She is a beginner, and we reasonably expected constant supervision and clear instructor accountability. On Day 1, she progressed from the small slopes to the magic carpet and bunny slopes. Unfortunately, that progress exposed a serious and unacceptable failure in how instructor transitions are handled. She began the lesson with Marsha and was supposed to transition to Suzanne. During that handoff, my daughter was simply left behind. No instructor guidance, no check-in, no supervision. Confused and trying to do the "right" thing, she independently rode the magic carpet and attempted to ski down the bunny slope again in hopes of finding her class or instructor. I had just finished a run when I noticed her sitting alone on the slope after falling. By the time I reached her, several minutes had passed and there was still no instructor in sight. This is not a gray area or a misunderstanding--my 6-year-old was alone on a ski slope with no adult responsible for her. When she saw me, she broke down in tears. She was scared, confused, and overwhelmed--and I was horrified as a parent. Another instructor, Kathleen (who was teaching an entirely different group), noticed something was wrong and came over as soon as she safely could. Along with another instructor, she tried to figure out what had happened. Neither of them could locate Marsha or Suzanne anywhere on the slopes. Kathleen ultimately took my daughter into her own class for the remaining 30 minutes. She was the only person who demonstrated urgency, compassion, and professionalism, and I am genuinely grateful to her. My husband immediately reported the incident to the front desk, and I later spoke directly with Dave, the head of the ski school. I was angry, animated and frustrated--and I make no apology for that. My child had been left unattended on a ski slope. Any parent in that position would and should demand answers and accountability. Dave told me that children being "misplaced" on the slopes is very common. Let that sink in. This is not reassuring--it is alarming. If this is "common," then there is a systemic problem. He claimed there were protocols to investigate, yet his response lacked urgency, ownership, or transparency. He also stated the instructors involved would be disciplined or suspended, yet the very next day I saw Marsha actively teaching another children's class. As the conversation continued, Dave began to imply that my daughter was somehow at fault. This was completely unacceptable. A 6-year-old is not responsible for instructor handoffs or safety procedures. He also claimed instructors are constantly "swarming" the area, yet only one instructor intervened when my child was clearly alone and distressed. This experience reflects a serious breakdown in supervision, communication, and leadership. Leaving a young child unattended on the slopes--even briefly--is not a minor issue. It is a fundamental safety failure. Based on this experience, I would never enroll my children in lessons here again and would not recommend this ski school to other families. Parents should ask very specific questions about instructor transitions, supervision ratios, and remain vigilant. After this experience, my daughter refused to return to lessons the following day because she was genuinely afraid she would be forgotten again. So yes--thank you, Dave, for turning what should have been a fun, confidence-building experience into something that left a six-year-old afraid to ski. read more

Staff was extremely nice and helpful. Thankfully, the 2 days I went, the place was not crazy busy. The runs for green level is great for beginners and those wanting to just stretch and get a feel of the snow and test out their equipments before heading to the other harder runs. It was short but some trails are a bit narrow. If someone decides to just lie in middle of the trail, and you're just a beginner, it can be dangerous. There is an area that is green that you head towards and take a lift up higher so that you can have a longer run. That lift is a bit slow though, in my opinion, so I like to take it slow when I go down. I haven't gone skiing in over 10 years, so this was a perfect place to get back into my groove. read more

Mt. Rose is the closest ski resort to Reno, 25 mins. away from South Reno. Feels like a locals mountain & private ski resort on weekdays and really gets busy on weekends, frequently drawing in visitors from the bay. A big sell of this mountain is how close their parking lot is to the lifts. They're not wrong, but on a busy day, mainly on weekends, you may end up parking far. In this case, for parents with little ones, I suggest driving up to the front to drop off some gear to lighten the load. Kids who are beginners may take some time in building up mental and physical strength for the ski/snowboard routine. They're also at one of the highest elevations at 8260ft', where the snow is. Their Rose Buds school for children is stellar. The instructors are always nice, and their bunny slopes are conveniently located right in front of their deck and bar, for those interested in watching their little ones progress. For those looking to take a lesson, you can save time by making reservations/purchasing tickets in advance & and signing their waiver online before your trip out. Lessons go out certain times of the day, so make sure to check up on the schedule online or give them a call for more info. Upon entering their building, head down the stairs to the right for the children's ski school, rentals, and tickets. If you only need lift tickets, you may purchase them from outside. Check out the Mt. Rose website for weekly promos, particularly good for locals, like their two for Tuesday special & discounted tickets for women's ski clinic. Women ski with different groups led by instructors based on skill level. The food is so awesome at this resort. They have a chef named Gus who's been there for many years. I highly suggest their chicken sandwich (ask for the hot sauce on top of the patty (like tapatio), chili (they even have vegan chili), breakfast burrito made with tater tots (soyrizo available), & specials. There's another side of this resort called Winter's Creek. This side is almost never busy since the slide side is mostly made of blue runs for intermediate skiers. Restrooms and restaurants are also available on this side. If you follow Mt. Rose on Instagram, they actively post updates on events, snow reports, closures, and more. Compared to Palisades, Mt. Rose is super small, but don't let that fool you. They have a good mix of terrain catering to all skill levels. You can see views of Lake Tahoe on the Lakeview chair, and the runs are so much fun. Before heading out to the resort, I suggest making sure you're not running into any snow storms or high winds. They may close the resort or put the chairs on wind holds. 50mph winds are generally enough to shut down the chairs. Check out the road cams to monitor the roads for snow levels and see if you may need chains. Sign up for Rose's newsletter to see when their season passes go on sale and get important notifications on news, events, and promos. You may easily get addicted to skiing or snowboarding. In this case, season passes are the only way to go. Discounts on food and gear come when the pass. If you're a local,made in need of gear, I suggest renting out gear at Bobos or Ski Pro. Can't beat their deals. Daily or seasonal rentals available. If you're looking to rent for the season, you must get there before the season starts before they run out. Mt. Daughter had her first lessons to snowboard. Process was seamless on line when booking. Everyone was friendly and pretty straight forward process when checking in. It's about $180+ for 2 hour lessons, rental gears, and lift tickets. Lessons didn't start immediately at top of the hour - some students were still trickling in. Instructors were friendly and about 2 instructors per 5 students or so. We brought our own gloves and helmet. There are plenty of seats with a grill to get food. Also, there is a store for merchandise and other gear too. Daughter was able to do a few more lifts for the day even after the lesson ended. read more

We rented gear which was super easy to get fitted for. The food at the lounge was good also! My son loved the burger. We have gone skiing in North Lake Tahoe a number of times but this is the first time that we have gone to Mount Rose. The drive to get to the resort is beautiful. You drive up though the mountains and the views are spectacular (everything was snow covered the day we went). It's a nice size resort. Not big like Northstar but not small either. The kids ski lessons and adult lift tickets were less expensive than many of the other resorts. The only issue that we ran into was that they require that the kids wear goggles. There were 4 kids in our group and we left their goggles back at the cabin. So I ended up shelling out an extra $140 for the kids. We put all 4 kids in the ski school and they had a blast. The magic carpet that takes the kids to the top of the hill is enclosed (first time I have ever seen that). The instructors were nice and were great with the kids. While the kids were with the instructors I got some skiing in. They had a lot of great wide open green and blue runs which was great for an intermediate skier like me. The food there was very good. I had some chili that was great and kids loved the chicken strips and fries. They had a locally brewed IPA there that was really good (forgot the name). The staff was really friendly and helpful. Overall our experience was great and would definitely go back (and make sure we bring the kid's goggles). read more

I'll still give it 4 stars because it's only a 25 minute drive from my house, but.... As a Season Pass Holder this year at Mt. Rose, it's really disappointing for an area that their marketing slogan is how high their base elevation is compared to other resorts in the area, that even in a record snowfall year, the season has not been extended anywhere near as long as other lower elevation areas in the Sierra Nevada region have (some to July 4.) I realize of course this is probably purely an economic decison to not extend the season to at least Memorial Day Weekend. But as a Business Owner myself, I'm honestly a bit surprised there's not some creative solution to create a win-win situation operating beyond April at least at some limited capacity. Rumor has it since Mt. Rose is on BLM Land, their permit doesn't allow them to operate past April. If this is indeed the case, it's a little surprising in such as huge record snowfall year, their marketing department didn't at least send out an email to all the Season Pass Holders explaining this, or, negotiated a one-month extension with BLM considering the unique circumstances. read more

The Resort lodge area is smaller than some of the other resorts in the area. It is very easy to navigate and get to the lifts quickly. The parking is close to the main lodge. We bought the afternoon tickets and everything was super cheap compared to other ski resorts (the ski lift + rental + entry ticket was ONLY $140, whereas at most places everything would cost about $300)! Upon arriving there were so many parking spaces and everything was super convenient to find! The staff were super friendly and nice, one of my friends hurt her foot that morning so she had to get a refund for her ticket and the staff was able to refund it to her (with a $20 service fee which is understandable)! Bought a early bird first timers lesson package "black Friday deal". It's only valid until Dec 18. Came on Thanksgiving week. We are not exactly first timers but would mind taking a refresher lesson along with included rental and beginner lift. Not only was the beginner lifts (Galena / Wizard) closed but when asked if I can instead use the only lift currently open (magic is not considered as lift in my book). I asked the buy an afternoon ticket and wait until 12:30 to get on the ONLY lift that was opened. There was no flexibility whatsoever. I was even told. Can't you read the little one your pass that says Galena / Wizard are closed? There you go that's my review. read more

Pros: A lot easier to book lessons than the big names - more availability if you are on short notice Cheaper than the well known resorts Kind instructors who had a lot of patience for my 4-year old daughter, who was a first time skier. Cons: Pretty basic lodge, nothing fancy Farther out from a lot of the North Tahoe housing and center of town, about a half hour drive at least - so you have to budget time for the commute which can be tough in the morning. read more

When you have spent thousands and thousands of dollars on lift tickets, food, etc. over the years and you get treated this way it really leaves a bad taste in your mouth. The latest nickel and dime scheme they have is taking away water cups even if you have bought a lot of food there. What's a cup cost anyways? Like 2 cents? Especially when someone just spent almost $100 in food? They claim it's an environmental move but they just want you to buy the thick plastic water bottles, soda, or other garbage they are trying to sell you. Breaking news: paper is compostable. Why don't you stop giving out heavy plastic silverware if you care about the environment. Corporate greed at its best and really rude staff. Although it was afternoon by the time we rolled around and the last "Next Steps" ski lesson of the day was supposed to have already started, a kind instructor let me join the group. The lesson was so helpful in making me feel comfortable on the slopes again after not skiing since last season (and not being terribly familiar with the sport to start with). Other than notorious for high winds, I think this resort has a "nickel and dime" mindset. There are many reviews below about their trying to nickel and dime you on drinks and weather cups. The other day my wife bought a neck gaiter, probably mentioned something along the line our kids might not want it. And the sales person cut the tag THEN sold her the item. Our kids indeed didn't like it and nobody used it, when we returned the item on the same day, we were told it cannot be returned because the tag was off and it's for sanitary reasons! No wonder she cut the tag. It adds to the injury that it's several times over priced. Talking about a ski resort selling tickets close to $200/day. read more
