We were set and left the house with high hopes. As we were leaving town, it was sunny, but by the time we got up there, it was a little overcast due to the fog. Not to worry, I had 3 jackets, just in case. They are doing so much work up there where the dam is. Lots of dirt/rock trucks. There was also a big sign saying the damn was extremely low because of all the work. We ended up not even trying to fish and headed straight for Stampede Reservoir.

So close to Reno that it makes for an easy last minute trip! Of course be careful with a last minute since you do have to make reservations. We called and the woman we spoke to said it's walk up only for a short day. The camp host at Boca Rest said that's not a thing but let us stay at a site that wasn't reserved. It's $20 a night and the camp benches are marked for reservation dates. I recommend calling to make a reservation if there is a holiday for sure. There are a lot of off roading roads that are easily accessible. Some take you to the lake while others lead you into the hills! Makes for a fun option to just hiking. Remember your helmets since you're in CA! Water is low due to the dam but enough to kayak and some people were water skiing. Camp sites are a decent size with nice picnic tables, a public restroom that wasn't too dirty, and fire pits with a cook top attached. The ground is pretty hard and quite dusty but you are camping! Some sites have more trees but be aware that not all campgrounds are trailer accessible. Overall not a bad place to camp and there are plenty of activities you could do!

OHV Trails are endless! Campground is always full, so make your reservations online. Campground is primitive, on dirt, no shade, pit toilets but if you have a boat, jet skis, floats, just like to swim or have any off road vehicles I highly recommend exploring this area. Depending on your location, pack a picnic and go up for the day. Lake is beautiful and not crowded. OHV trails are shady and plenty of scenic places to stop and have lunch.

    Beautiful day.

Boca is closer to Reno than Tahoe and waaaaay less crowded. My brother stopped in town and we wanted to hit tahoe but it was too late in the afternoon to get parking so we popped over to Boca. We found a spot just off a short dirt road drive where we had no one around for several hours. Later on 4 people showed up. 4 is a lot better than 400! Plus the bonus is that there is no fee, and the water is warm-ish for lakes in this area. It's not a huge lake and it's not as crystal clear as you'd get at Tahoe but it's still has good visibility and good scenery. Beautiful day.

Very beautiful, love camping here. The campsites have gravel around them so not all of them will be comfortable to pitch a tent at. Campground is closing for the season October 14, wish it was open year around though. Definitely will come back a lot when it opens again!

This is a beautiful lake about 20 miles outside of Reno going West on the 80. When you arrive, you have to have a vehicle that is capable of handling rough terrain and/or jagged rocks to get down to the water. Pretty much any car can make it, but if you're driving say a slammed Civic, you're SOL. I drive a lowered E30 and it will die if I take it here. There are areas you can park your car, like right after the damn crossing, and you can walk down to the lake from there. Bring all your aquatic toys! Jet skis, boats and pretty much any water toy can be used here. Super easy to launch and the water is clean, calm and pretty much yours because there are barley any people on this lake. Since we got a lot of snow this winter, the lake is nice and full and the little Truckee River that flows between Stampede and Boca is rushing. The area surrounding the lake is even more beautiful! Trees everywhere! Birds everywhere! And it's quiet! Most of the lake is DAY USE ONLY, but they have camping areas that are about $20 a night. My boyfriend and I go together and we bring beers, music, game cards, and lots of floating devices and just gave a blast. I bet you will too! I'm just happy places like this are my backyard now. Happy adventures everyone!

First time camping here and actually enjoyed it. It's a nice campground , close to the stampede…read morereservoir so you just walk down to the water and can swim in it, and plus the drive to this campground is so beautiful, I was mesmerized the whole drive to and from. Just a few things to remember if you decide to camp here though: 1. You can have campfires with the pit, but you will need to bring your own firewood as the camp was sold out when we went and from what we were told by other campers there, they said it was $22 for the firewood. So be prepared to bring your own. 2. It's a bit of hike to get to the water plus if you want to go somewhere more flat and you are coming from the campground you may find yourself walking far to the other side , so keep in mind what you bring and what time you decide to go down to the water 3. There are deers that you may see, even this past weekend that I went , a deer was right by our campsite and close to our tent. 4. If you are tent camping or don't have a trailer and you are to use the bathrooms here.. beware it is pretty gnarly , so when booking a site you may want to be a little away from the bathroom as it does smell pretty bad even from a distant and you will also want to bring your own TP as they always are out by the end of the day into the next morning 5. Regardless if it is summer, bring yourself a jacket and be prepared for the cold , especially if you are tent camping. It get cold here at night and early morning. I was surprised also based off of someone elses review that they said they got talked to by the camp hosts/ ranger , because when we went this camp site on the other side of us were blasting their music and partying all the way till 2am without consequences , so maybe they have became more lenient. But for those that want a quiet camp experience if you are tent camping and don't have a trailer or camper to block out the noise, just be cautious that the sites are pretty close together and you will hear everything especially those that are partying while camping. Overall , I did enjoy this campground and happy to say I had my first woods camping trip here after a long time of not camping in the woods.

Five stars, if you don't mind noise…read more 4 PROS: 1) Cheap. $20 a night. That's like a McDonald's Value Meal. (Thanks, Obama). 2) Great location. The Truckee River is a sleepy and underrated river that is safe for innertubing if you know the few spots to avoid. It's a straight-shot, seven mile ride to Lake Tahoe, and at 1.5 miles down the road, 7-Eleven is walking distance, if you wake up early and go get coffee. [That 7-Eleven also has $8 bundles of firewood, which comes in handy when your host is empty-handed) 3) Spacious space with a low fire pit so you can see the fire better, a picnic table, and a bear locker, the bear locker locks with a noise, so it's hard to steal cookies without getting caught. 4) Relatively small, with only 21 spots, which potentially limits some neighbor noise and keeps multiple parties closer together. 4 CONS: 1) The number one complaint for all reviewers is the car noise from the steady flow of vehicles roaring up and down the 89. Tent only spots 22-28 get a little buffer because they're the furthest from the road, closest to the river, and down a small hill. 2) This is likely more rare, but there's a big house across the river, visible from sites 23-28. They hosted a party the night and went from loud to louder throughout the night. They aren't subject to Quiet Hours, and it especially intolerable when they intentionally yelled and hit our tents with flashlights. I kept thinking it was an alien invasion coming to take us away. After a while, I was hoping it was. 3) The first time we went to our hosts at #2 (D & K), they weren't there. The second time, they were out of wood. Had we not bought wood elsewhere we'd be in the dark, literally. So, don't rely on the host for wood. 4) This is minor, but the dirt roads make the Indiana Jones ride look like a block of greased marble. NOTE ON RIVER ACCESS: I expected to be level with the river, or at least able to walk to a clearing for a beachy area, to either climb rocks or wade into the water, but I didn't see clear river access aside a few paths through six feet high shrubs. [Psst, US Forest Service: Clearing a thirty-foot beach area would make for a nice, safe communal space] NOTE ON BUGS: We didn't experience yellow jackets (super late June). I used bug spray to avoid mosquitos. Not a bunch of gnats, like other sites. There are anthills, but only one adventurous ant made it into our tent. Finally, Of the 28 sites, 12 are tent-only. Of the tent-only sites, the #22-28 spots are the best, though you have to use the parking lot and can't keep your car at the site. Having a spot a hundred steps down a hill means it is a little more quiet and private, but packing and unpacking is a little tougher and time-consuming, Plus, you can't keep an eye on your ride to make sure bears aren't tearing it apart to find an four-year-old French fry. #28 is the clear winner having only one neighbor. I would avoid 25-26 because they might share a path to the parking lot. The guy is 25 kept walking through our camp (behind our bear locker), so either the separate path is nonexistent, hard to find, or he's a jabroni. My wife loved 26 for the perfectly spaced hammock trees. I assume #19-21 would be next best, being in the pocket furthest south. #9-11 are trash. I couldn't imagine staying in Spot #10. Like #9 and #11, it's practically in the parking lot, so you'd see more taillights than starlight, but 10 is on the bathroom trail. It should be renamed #2.

I am not a perfect person so I don't expect someone else to be but the lack of care and effort was clear. You won't find a piece of toilet paper to wipe your butt nor a light in the bathroom or any running water for that matter. The camp site gives no directions to find your lot. Marker post was broken and lying in the dirt. Also don't be surprised if your camp sight is a picnic bench surrounded by trees. Management comes around once a day to police the area, hard to tell that these people work for the campgrounds with no clear uniform or bedside manner just a random person driving up to your camp sight demanding you listen to their demands. Not a please a thank you or even a name in sight. Don't trust anything you read on the website because they do not or may not even know how to update the website. Safe to say that is my last time staying at silver creek campgrounds.

There was only one site left, it was one close to the road but I was just stoked to get a spot! We were bummed to get an email 2-3 weeks before the reservation that Goose Meadow wasn't able to open on time this year because of all the snow from our heavy winter. Luckily, I got another email the week of the reservation and they said the campground is able to open on time! That is largely because the camp host and some other forest service workers went out and shoveled shady spots of the campground that still had over 4ft of snow. We met the camp host during our stay and he was really nice! Our site was right across from him and we had no issues with that. We've stayed at Silver Creek and Granite Flat in the past which are the other two campgrounds on 89 between I-80 and Palisades. Goose Meadow is definitely the best out of these three! The sites are more spread out and everything feels more private because the area is more heavily wooded. Plus, there are far fewer sites here than at the other campgrounds which makes it feel more lowkey and quiet. Our site was by the road, so you can hear some cars passing by. We didn't mind as we already expected that since we've camped in this area before. The prime spots are the ones closest to the river, but those fill up fast. You can easily make reservations online. Firewood is for sale from the camp host and there are waterspouts within the campground. Walking distance to the river. Bathroom facilities were nice and very clean. Each site has a fire ring, picnic table, and room for 1-3 cars (varies by site location). Only a 10 min drive to Palisades for spring skiing which you can't beat. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on leash. We really enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back!
