I'm pretty sure that my mother used to bring me here when I was a kid-but I had forgotten about that until I visited again as an adult. Then the memories started eeking their way back from the corners of my mind. The chocolate mint sandwiches were a semi-regular treat in our house growing up. Holidays, birthdays or other special occasions called for those mints. Of course, those are still here. But my more grown-up palate acknowledged the wider variety of options and snagged a few. Everything was delicious-although the cherry cordials were not my favorite; something about them was just off. But everything else was tasty and I'll certainly find my way back when I'm in the area again.

I've never been inside this location, but I was so happy we did! We came in on a whim while trying to pass time, and it was 110% worth it! We found all the classic chocolate that we love, as well as candy- new and classic! We ended up with a couple packets of Razzles, pop rocks, gummy dinosaurs, and my personal favorite - Sea Foam! I ended up spending 9$ and some cents on everything! Such a great deal! The ladies at the counter were incredibly friendly and even offered my son a smarties sucker which was so nostalgic! It was very calming inside, not a lot of customers. We watched 3 people go in before we went in, so they do have customers, it's just not overwhelming inside which I appreciated! We made it our mission to return to try the ice cream our next go around!

Fun place to visit, saw it on the way to a weird restaurant in Bountiful. Staff was very friendly and provided free samples. The ice cream was really delicious and not too sweet. They said this was Mrs Cavanaugh's first business took place in this location and where she also lived. Can't verify this but that is what I was told. Need to go check out the SLC location and take a guided tour when COVID gets under wraps.

Delicious chocolate covered strawberries, and they were so prepared for the busy Valentine's Day rush. Quick, yummy, and wonderful service.

Mint usually overpowers chocolate and I'm left feeling like I've just brushed my teeth with some sort of Proctor & Gamble housecleaning product.

Exceptional choices! A little hard to find but worth the drive! Oh yes! Highly recommendread more

I learned about Startup Candy Co only recently when Rockwell Ice Cream announced they'd purchased…read moreit. They said they would make no changes, and this has enabled a historical candy company to continue producing and selling their special wares, so bravo! They have very limited hours: 11am-3pm, and only on weekdays so it is a bit of a challenge getting here. But on President's Day I was off work, and I checked ahead of time to verify they were open, so made the trek down to Provo. They are housed in a strip of brick buildings shared with other businesses, and though I arrived around 11:30, the shop door was locked. I have the worst luck when I am set on visiting somewhere in particular, and the whole way there I kept saying that they wouldn't be open, considering I had to drive nearly an hour just to get there, so it felt unsurprising. Thankfully, though, as I turned away they unlocked the door. I imagine they do little actual business through this store, so probably don't stress too much about making sure the door is open, and clearly they can hear from inside. The point of this rambling story is simply to persevere, or perhaps call them, if you arrive during normal business hours and they don't appear to be open. The shop interior is just one small room, and honestly, there was very little product. They've got a variety of about twenty or so lollipops, including some seconds, their Magnolia candy (teeny hard candies with a perfumed liquid center), caramel popcorn, chocolate covered cinnamon bears, and a couple other chocolate covered goodies (including their Opera bar...more on that in a moment!). I inquired if they still had the chocolate covered caramels they'd shared on IG, but they were unfortunately out, though offered that Rockwell should have some. I was a bit crestfallen, as there was so little there, it was all milk chocolate save for the Black Bears, and I'd rather had my heart set on the caramel, but that was a Valentine's Day special, so the onus was on me to confirm their availability. Anyways, I bought Black Bears (dark chocolate covered cinnamon bears) and an Opera Bar, eschewing the planned for Magnolias once I read they had artificial flavoring (though now I wish I would have at least tried a little tin). The Opera bar was the number one thing I wanted as I imagined it would be close to one of my favorite things in the world: Opera Fudge from Lebanon, Pennsylvania. While the milk chocolate coating it was horrid (like...not even chocolate. Might as well have been candy melts for all the chocolate flavor it gave), the filling was EXACTLY like the opera fudge of my dreams. Not an ooey, melty fondant, but thick, rich, and lusciously creamy. They had a box of cream chocolates too, which I imagine might be made with the same filling, and I hope those are someday offered in dark chocolate as that would basically make all my wishes come true. And the cinnamon bears were very good! The dark chocolate was pleasantly bitter, and the perfect foil to the sweet, not super spicy cinnamon gummies. Side note regarding opera fudge, then I promise I'll be finished as this is inordinately long for a simple candy shop: Opera fudge is commonly believed to have originated in Cincinnati, Ohio around 1905, though Pennsylvanians claim it as their invention, too. Startup has been producing their Opera Bar since 1895, which predates both regions' mention of the candy, and while they don't claim to be the original (though the package notes it was possibly the first filled candy bar ever?!), they actually might be, and regardless, it is pretty dang awesome, especially paired with the packaging adorned by the original artwork. And lastly, Startup deserves mad respect because I attempted to make this candy at home THREE times in one day and they were all fails (sugar crystallized on me, boo!). Overall, three to four stars for the product (artificial flavors and gross milk chocolate are a 1-2, but good dark chocolate and amazing opera fudge are 4-5), so four stars overall as the owner was clearly concerned with my being pleased with the experience, they still operate out of the charming mustard-bricked building they moved to in 1898 (they were actually producing candy way before then. Read the history on their website-it's very interesting!), and I love sweet (hahaha) local businesses like this. I'm just pleased they've hung around for over 150 years.
