If I could give a negative review I would. Did not clear my drain. They didn't want to continue until it was clear giving me a bunch of garbage about it resisting. Not even 2 weeks and a small problem became a basement with inches of standing water. Called back and they told me old pipes don't get any kind of warranty and I would need to pay again. After having Penning Plumbing "clear" my sewer lines twice within 14 months, they recommended having my sewer pipes replaced. I found Mr Rooter, because at the time they were the only ones that would sleeve new pipes with minimal lawn disturbance with the technique they used. After getting a quote, Bryan told me that guy wasn't there anymore, so they'd take out two sidewalk squares and replace the pipes from there. Fearing another sewer backup, and after some back and forth on getting the correct price on the invoice (foreshadowing), Mr. Rooter sent Bryan and Briton to replace all my pipes from my house to the city of Grand Rapids pipes on March 15. Instead of entering from the sidewalk, they excavated from in front of my house instead and added an outside sewer access. They finished in one day and Bryan said he'd be back the next day (March 16) after the city of Grand Rapids checks the connection to fill the hole they made. I didn't need to be there, so I paid the remainder of the invoice. I came home on March 16 to find the hole filled, but a lot of ground not replaced and left on my lawn and landscaping (see photos). I called and left a message as it was after hours expressing my concern because of the rain in the forecast and tried to replace some of the ground myself. The weekend passed with no reply (foreshadowing), but I did receive the final invoice on March 18 with the charge for sidewalk removal still on it. The week of March 20 the city of GR came out to check their lines, and found Mr Rooter had come up by about 7 feet. Mr. Rooter did not replace about 7 feet of pipes they were contracted to replace. Over the next two weeks I would call and email with little response or movement (foreshadowing), and in the meantime, I had leaks in my basement where I never had water come in before. Finally I spoke with Briton who said he would come out to check. I asked about the leaks, and he said I'd have to "wait them out" before they stop. A few days later I spoke with Bryan, after he missed an appointment, and he said if they were short it was only by a foot. The next day Drew was dispatched to my house, who confirm Mr. Rooter was about 7 feet short. He didn't know why they were short or why they didn't say anything, but said this isn't how they should be doing work. He wrote a report, but nothing came of it. Long story short for the sake of this review, for the next two months I called and emailed to get an answer from Mr. Rooter. I spoke with Megan and Alicia. Cara was assigned to my job, she texted me once to say she was still working on it, then never again. I also never spoke to Byran nor Briton again. The owner, Mr. Matt Engel, said he would contact me about the situation, but never did. He also said, through Alicia, he would refund a partial amount, but never did (I did receive a refund for the sidewalk removal earlier on). The best I got from anyone at Mr. Rooter was they were sorry, they agreed with my frustration, they pride themselves on communication and this isn't how they handle their business. Yet I only ever received the contrary. On their invoice they have a "No hassle" guarantee, where, if the customer isn't happy within the first year, they'd fix it. Effectively, the whole franchise ghosted me instead. Eventually I contacted the corporate office, Neighborly. They recorded everything and wrote up a report, but because Mr. Rooter is an independent franchise, they can't do much else, which is unacceptable. Since, I have sought legal council and filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, which is still open. My suspicion is that this was Mr. Rooter and its owner Mr. Engel's gameplay: to wait out the customer because the customer is libel to lose interest before any real consequences are incurred. If they did it to me, they've probably done it before and will probably do it again. It's pathetic and cowardly. My advice to others is: if you have a sewer backup, call your city/municipality FIRST. If you need sewer and/or plumbing services, DO NOT call Mr. Rooter. read more

This company is an absolute joke. We have been trying to get ahold of this company for 4 days now and we are getting no response. The phone lines are not excepting new voicemails as it is full and there are multiple messages on the answering service. The emergency number is giving the run around saying they are sending messages to corporate and corporate is not responding either. I would not recommend this company to anyone. Run and do not look back. I hired Mr. Rooter to plumb a bathroom remodel. Everything they have touched so far has failed or been done very poorly. The worst is when the main line in the bathroom failed and destroyed the ceiling in the room below. They agreed in writing to pay for it and approved the estimate....about $2,000.00 All was good until it came time to pay for the repair. Now they have gone silent and ignoring all requests for payment. I am now having to take legal action against them. Their actions prove they are liars and should not be trusted to touch anything in anybody's home as they do not stand behind their work I have contacted their national office as this is a franchise and they do not seem to interested in helping. read more

It is only for 30 days. They said couldn't be out until the next day. We needed it fixed now. The guy from roto-router came out right away. He snaked my drain and pulled out so many roots. We couldn't say whether they are any good, since they never bothered to show up! We called on Thursday, because the line to our handicap-ready bathroom was backed up and overflowing. We were promised that they'd be out between 11 AM and 1 PM on Friday. Friday we got an email in the morning saying they'd be here between 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM. Not what they originally promised, but okay. 5:30 PM they call to say it will still be a while. 9:30 PM they call to say they can't make it, they'll be here on Saturday between 5 and 7 PM. Three guesses who never showed up on Saturday either, nor did they even bother to call with an excuse as to why they didn't bother to come. The two service techs that were sent to my house were very professional, informative and polite. They were a couple of hours later than my scheduled time, but the office kept in constant contact with me, informing me every step of the way. They were great, but the cost was just a bit higher than I expected for a hot water heater to be replaced, but after calling several other plumbing services, they were able to come out for a free estimate the same day and install the new hot water heater the next morning while other services were at least 3 days out. It only took them 2 hours to complete and they completely cleaned up before they left too. read more

We needed our toilet repaired in our guest bathroom and called Mr. Rooter. They dispatched a repairman who showed up in about 30 minutes, which was great. Jay did a great job, explaining what was wrong and our options to fix the problem. He was very friendly, professional, and helpful. He did the work in a timely manner and educated both my husband and I on clearing the air out of the pipes once the water was turned back on. Find another option. This company trains the crews to find ways to up charge everything and prey on those who they perceive don't have a clue. They came out to my house to unclog my main line. I was happy that they reacted fast and cleared the line but then one week later, same problem. They came back out for free but this time found the real problem which was a cracked pipe between the house and the septic. Now for the kicker.... these guys didn't want to dig 18" down to get to the cracked pipe so I get a $1900 estimate so they could bring in an excavator. Are you kidding me? Told them I had to get another opinion. Ended up finding a local company that came out that day. One guy dug up the area, went for parts, came back and fixed the problem and was gone in 2 hours for under $250 total. Found out later that the crews for Mr. Rooter work on commission. Will never call Mr. Rooter again. Mr. Rip off if you ask me. read more

My wife called to get an estimate on our well pump and they said they would come and give a free estimate. The guy came out, looked at it (opened the pressure switch contact with his pen) and said it would be $450 for a new pressure switch (A pressure switch that you can buy at any hardware store for $28 and easy to install). I told him no and they still charged me $55 just to come out. I called the next day to tell them I was unhappy that we were told we would get a free estimate and I wanted a refund, they told me they would call me in 2 days. After a week of not hearing from them I called back and they said it will be looked into and call me back... I'm still waiting a month later. Just to let you know it was not the switch the wells sand filter is plugged. read more

Firstly, the reception staff was excellent. After speaking with several other companies over the phone, Mr. Rooter was far and away the best customer service over the phone. She was able to get a technician out within 12 hours. They also do not charge a flat fee. The technician comes out to take a look at the problem and then gives you an estimate of charges before performing any service. The technician was very professional and did a great job. He also gave us 3 different options of how to proceed; short term fix to long term fix. The nice thing about this was that if we choose to proceed with the long term fix in the next week or so, the amount we spent on the shorter term fix will be applied to the total. This way we won't be paying for services twice. Overall it was a great experience especially under such crappy circumstances. No one wants to have to call a plumber when their sewer backs up, but Mr. Rooter was a huge help. He was able to get everything working and fixed before we had a huge group of people over for dinner. I had a terrible experience with Mr. Rooter...called on a Saturday to address basement drain back-up that flooded half of one side of the basement. I was told a service tech would be over between 12-2pm...no call no show. I called the office and they said they couldn't get a hold of the tech as he wasn't answering his phone. I decided to give them another chance and rescheduled for 6:30-8:30pm that same day. Guess what? No call, no show. I called the office again and they said the two techs that were working were at another job and they didn't know when they would be done. I was shocked that they did business in that manner, without calling the customer to inform them the tech wouldn't make their appointment. They asked if I wanted to reschedule and I said, "No thank you, I'll take my business elsewhere." read more

Mr. Rooter was able to send a technician out within 24 hours of the issue; they gave a two-hour time frame, called 30 minutes before they were to arrive and came in the early part of that window. They do not have flat fees and will not quote over the phone, as every house and issue varies, requiring different solutions. However, the house call is free and you can decline services at no charge once they discover the problem and quote their recommended solution. My particular problem happened to be a clogged main line, and they give several solutions with varying prices and results. Specifically, my technician was Les and I recommend you request him if such a thing is possible. He has a very calm and relaxed demeanor, arrived on time and simply asked for my description of the problem. Les is very knowledgeable and experienced and could hypothesize what my issue was pretty quickly, but did not speed through the process. He was very willing and, perhaps, enjoyed answering any and all of my questions no matter how basic they were; I learned a lot about my house, it's plumbing and how he was correcting the issue just by talking to him throughout the job. He gave me a lot of options for the fix and did not pressure me to choose any of them or up-sell me, he only gave recommendations and guided me through what each of the processes were. Les explained they operate and sustain their business with honesty and thoroughness, both of which were very true. He got to work and snaked the main drain, while also running the camera in the line so I could see the obstructions he was hitting. He'd hit each clog several times (being thorough) to make sure he'd get it the best he could and ran all the way out to the city connection. Most of the blockage was tree roots and he showed me what trees they were coming from and also gave advice on how to keep the line clean and how to resolve the, unfortunately, reoccurring issue in the future. Les took excellent notes in my file so that the next technician, should it not be him, would know exactly how to achieve the same caliber result. I think everyone is skeptical about this type of repair and, with a few seemingly indistinguishable competitors out there, it's hard to know where to start. However, Mr. Rooter (and Les, specifically) was a great choice, being easy to get out to your location and with no pressure to even spend any money after the house call and diagnosis. With my particular situation being the clogged main line, you can expect to pay anywhere from $350 to $750+ depending on what you need or should choose to have done. I will note that if the line is over 100ft it will be more expensive. Also, you can choose to run a drain auger or hydro-jet the line, with the later being more thorough and, thus more expensive as well. It all comes down to your house and when and how it was built. They also don't know what the source of the clog is, whether it's tree roots, sludge, a children's toy or even a broken line. After talking with Les for a while, you begin to understand why plumbers get paid what they do. Cheers to Les! I certainly hope Mr. Rooter realizes how important he is within their staff. read more
