Mr. Mac's recently opened the area's first MACARONI & CHEESE restaurant in the former Amato's/Pizza Hut space on Hooksett Road. Mr. Mac's serves up this very popular classic comfort dish the way grandma made it, but in a variety of creative ways.
This casual restaurant is an open concept, where you order at the counter and can watch your food being prepared to order in the small open kitchen. There are a few tables for eating in and the walls are decorated with framed photos for sale by Max Bittle. The macaroni & cheese dishes are oven baked in black iron pans and served to your table piping hot in the pan. Takeout is also available too!
Here's a rundown on the mac & cheese menu offerings (in 11/2010):
Classic All American: American cheddar
Cheeseburger Mac: ground beef, cheddar and American cheeses
Cheese Please!: 4 cheeses (cheddar, muenster, gruyere, & pecorino)
Blazin' Buffalo Chicken Mac: buffalo sauce, American & Cabot cheddar, topped with ranch or bleu cheese
Philly Cheese Steak: shaved steak, American & provolone cheese, onions, and peppers
Chicken Cordon Bleu: American & gruyere cheeses, dijon mustard, chicken & Canadian bacon
Tuna Mac: American cheese, tuna, snow peas, and a golden cheese crust
Cajun Mac: cheddar & pepper jack cheeses, andoulle sausage, green pepper, onions, celery, garlic, & Cajun seasonings
Sweet Chili Chicken Mac: with sweet BBQ and hint of hot chili
Mediterranean: mozzarella & goat cheeses, artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes, & kalmeta olives
Papa's Mac: mozzarella & parmesan cheeses, pepperoni, sundried & roasted tomatoes, garlic and basil
Carbonara: blend of parmesan, reggiana, pecorino, & provolone cheeses, add in the garlic and prosciutto
Scampi: mozzarella, provolone, & parmesan cheeses with lemon & garlic, choose shrimp or chicken
Lobstah Mac: a blend of cheeses with lobster meat
You can also create your own macaroni & cheese dish starting out with the basic macaroni, choose 1-2 cheeses, a sauce, and add more ingredients (veggies and meats). The mac & cheese dishes are offered in 3 sizes: Small (kids/snack size: $4.99-$9.99), Medium (1-2 people: $6.99-$14.99), The Big Cheese (family size: $11.99-$24.99). Whole wheat and gluten free pasta also available.
Besides mac & cheese, they offer salads, soup of the day, bottled Coke & Moxie drinks, hot drinks, and desserts (cookies, brownies, cheesecake bites).
For takeout, I ordered a medium Cajun Mac (got it for $7.99 as a promotion, normally $9.99) and the food was baked and ready in 10 minutes. The portion of food (medium size) was just right and this piping hot dish tasted pretty good. The macaroni was firm and the blend of cheeses with the andoulle and vegetables was a decent combination of flavors. However, this dish was on the oily side and not spicy tasting as expected for a Cajun dish (needs more kick), but it was still a very filling.
Overall, what I had was decent. I would return again to try another baked mac & cheese dish. The Philly Cheese Steak or the Blazin' Buffalo Chicken Mac both sound pretty good!
