I came here a few times during my time in Kaiserslautern and it was consistently pretty good. Tucked back in a corner behind other restaurants, you'll find Mr Lian has a pretty decent sized parking lot. They have a GREAT outdoor patio for summer weather but, of course, there are some bugs so, prepare yourself. My first trip to this restaurant had me ordering the pho and it was sadly the worst pho I've ever had in my life. It was bland with just a spattering meat. It was definitely not something I ever ordered again. Their sushi, however, is excellent!! I ate it many times and always enjoyed everything. Let's just get this going. The sushi is okay, seems like everything is fried, there's too much sauce and they're expensive. The extravagant plate decor with the smoke and the layers of intricately placed sushi does not make me feel better about the price. What an awesome looking building! The drive in to the area is weird and so is parking, but the place is beautiful, easily the nicest Asian restaurant I have been to in the area. The service is multi-lingual and very quick! The menu has many different types of Asian cuisine, but the options within each are a little limited (not that I am complaining because that meant less indecisiveness lol). We had several types of sushi and the prawn/shrimp dumpling appetizer. Everything was great and the prices were very reasonable, especially considering the venue being so nice. If you would like a drink other than water order the Ginger Tea, no matter how many we order this is always the favorite at the table. For an appetizer the Cocolove coconut soup is incredible. I order it with chicken instead of tofu. You can add a little spice with some siracha if you need, but it's a burst of flavor without! OMG! So glad we found this place. I didn't expect to find a good sushi place in this area. Like most sushi lovers, I've had the opportunity to eat sushi all over the world and yes I have my favorite places to go. But there was nothing to fault with the meal that we had at Mr. Lians. The atmosphere is nice but a little tight at some tables. We had the Crispy Tiger and the Tuna Sashima (S55) and it was fantastic. It was a bit crowded and we had to wait about 45 minutes for our food but it was well worth it. The presentation was fantastic. Our plate was a work of art. Highly recommended for a date night. Wow. Went for the Pho Bo and was not disappointed at all. Probably the most rewarding meal decision made on pho in Germany/Europe yet. In my opinion, the broth was done exactly right and rivals that of Cali pho. The restaurant advertises itself as pan-Asian which is rather accurate, while leaning heavy toward the Vietnamese and Japanese sushi cuisines. I think it would be appropriate to post the following tidbit of food history here for a German establishment that serves Vietnamese food. Right after WWII and during the Cold War Era, that Germany had a massive labor shortage. Being divided between mainly the U.S. and Soviet Union, the labor was outsourced from different countries. At the time, the U.S. had democratic alliances with Turkey, and subsequently a lot of Turkish migrants arrived to Germany. Thus, you have the "doner" influence that you see all over Germany. Likewise, in parts of Germany and Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union outsourced the labor from Vietnam in which they had communist alliance with, thus explaining the fairly large population pockets of Vietnamese migrants. This would seem to explain why the Pho here in Germany and mostly Eastern Europe will be different than the Pho you find in the U.S. HOWEVER, the pho found here resembles the Regional Southern Vietnamese pho style which is a rarity since Ive been traveling Europe. read more

Now, before I start talking about how AMAZING the sushi/food is, let me first be clear that I am born and raised in the beautiful, Hawai'i nei and have experienced the most delicious kinds of sushi you can imagine. So when I say Mr. Lian WILL NOT disappoint you, they won't. I've heard from many different kinds of people (from all different raises, backgrounds and cultures) who talk about how delicious the sushi is here at this particular establishment. This has been my 5th time eating from here (3 takeout order and 2 dine ins) and I have to tell you, they make the not only amazing sushi, but delicious apps and pho too! My all time favorite rolls are the: 1. Crispy Tiger Roll 2. Aburi Salmon Roll (Tuna is good too) 3. Alaska Roll Although between all three, the first and secondk are mine and my husband's ｆａｖｏｒｉｔｅ! He's only eaten here twice but i've had the pleasure of enjoying/testing it before him. This last time that we ate there, we decided to try the appetizers and I wanted to try some pho since i'm a little under the weather. The spring rolls were delicious, not what i'm used to but still very good. We also had the shrimp dumplings, which i didn't get a photo of but trust me, super yummy. The pho, (small order comes with a main entrée or roll, was a treat! Coming from Hawaii I was skeptical of a Sushi restaurant in Germany, but I'd like to think of myself as adventurous and respectful of chefs creations. My husband and I joined a very large group of over 20ppl! I initially thought - how can they seat us all?! But the location in downtown Kaiserslautern can! Easily! The restaurant is quite large and is adorned with aisles of long tables with bench seating. The tables were solid wood and very pretty. The inside is dark and romantic and it would be perfect for a date night, but there were plenty of groups of friends there as well. I even enjoyed the simple yet nice table candles (sometimes restaurants place ugly candles or useless items on the tables, but here everything was useful and neat). The menu had enough variety for expats of all backgrounds to find something within their comfort zones. Our dish was served with a little jar of dry ice so it was "smoking" when it arrived on the table which looked really cool and definitely draws attention. It was a fun aspect of the ambiance! The phō was tasty, a little oily, with flat rice noodles (like fettuccine but rice noodle), and the beef was tasty but again not what I'm used to in the states (in US it's shaved thin sliced beef, often served raw); the beef here was more like chunks so it was thick but the flavor was delicious. I'd order the pho again because all the flavors were just delicious for a nice broth soup on a cold Germany winter day. We also ordered the Crispy Tiger roll which looked massive (each slice) but they actually slice the rolls to make them fit in your mouth - you just have to split them apart from each other. And finally we also had the Tuna Sashimi. Everything tasted great and was presented very eloquently. As you can imagine with 20+ people at our table(s) service took awhile, but I appreciated that they served us all at one time which is the proper service protocol. There's also plenty of parking garages near by and we only paid €4 (maybe less!) for 4hrs of parking. Parking garages in EU are super TIGHT. Don't chance it, circle the lot if you have to exit the garage at the perfect angle. Americans tend to scratch their cars big-time just trying to enter and exit. Take your time you're on a special date! ;) Inside the parking garages are usually red self service paying stations that have the British flag to read instructions in English. With two cocktails and one large sparkling water, plus the roll, sashimi and two small phō's, the bill came to €65 $80). I'd say that was a pretty good deal. I can't wait to go back! read more

First experience here was pretty good! Started with the spring rolls and coconut soup. Spring rolls were typical with normal chili sauce on the side. The coconut soup (with added chicken) was great, not as sweet as it normally can be, but the mushrooms, tomatoes and spices were on point. The sushi was fresh. Normally we get sashimi by 2 slices. This has 8 (salmon or tuna) in one order. I didn't ask if we could mix, which would have been better. The sashimi was not thinly sliced. The rolls were okay. We got the maguro and flaming tuna rolls. Both were fresh. I am just so sad they didn't have a spicy tuna roll. We finished with a delightfully refreshing bowl of green tea ice cream with fresh fruit. Having been a semi-regular customer for a few months, I went to Lians a few weeks ago. They have a new menu, a seemingly new staff (my group only recognized two waiters of probably 12), and worst of all, a new business model. Gone are the reasonably priced portions, creatively arranged with care and passion, replaced instead by half the amount for the same price with lower quality ingredients and emotionless service. Disappointing. My family used to go there, spend €60ish and leave full of delicious sushi. This time we spent more and left hungry and completely unsatisfied with our food and experience. I ended up going on Easter Sunday just before the dinner rush and got lucky with a table for 5. Pros: I had the Thai Basil Lemonade with an assortment of different sushi maki rolls (see photos). The lemonade was so good and refreshing, I highly recommend it. I was able to try their California maki, tempura shrimp maki and unagi maki (although they may have different names for some of them, the components are the same). They also have a selection of appetizers, pho, etc. that I did not try. Coming from Hawaii, I am very particular about my sushi. I know that the fish won't be exactly the same, but honestly it was very close to what I am used to back on the islands. Both the presentation and taste of the sushi was great.The decor is modern and sleek with intimate lighting. The ambience is great for families, those special date nights and casual gatherings with friends. Cons: One reason for not giving this place 5 stars for the slow service, maybe because it was the Easter holiday. Another reason is for the small parking lost and restaurant space, which may lead to a long wait time. Overall: Despite those two factors, this place is worth a try. Decent prices. Qualify sushi.
