This is s great after dinner spot for coffee and ice cream. The prices are super reasonable and the staff is very friendly and helpful. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because their ice cream is Bluebell which is good, but I can get it at the grocery store. That being said I enjoyed my cup of ice cream and the time spent sitting outdoors. This also seems to be a popular family destination as well. Definitely recommended! read more

This place has been around since I was a child, and I hope it stays that way forever. It is an absolute JEWEL in Fairhope, and whenever I bring company into town, they *must* visit MGB for a Fairhope Float (even though they're a little too sweet for my tastes, haha!). What a cute little place! It's fairly small and it has a cute little porch on the front with tables where you can sit and people watch. My husband is like a child when it comes to ice cream. He loves it! If I want to make him happy, I can just take him out for ice cream. We stopped in Mr. Gene's Beans one night after dinner and grabbed a couple of scoops. I immediately noticed that they serve Blue Bell, so YAY! They had a nice little selection of flavors, and I decided on a scoop of peach in a cup. The hubs ordered a scoop of some other flavor with caramel and pecans in a waffle cone. The service was good and the prices were reasonable. I think we paid about $5 for ice cream. read more

Had to stop for some ice cream at this little shoppe I kept hearing rave reviews about. Pulled up and saw it was packed full of people, service was the quickest I have ever seen at an ice cream or coffee shop. My husband ordered a waffle cone with birthday cake ice cream. Mr Gene's Beans--a relic of an ice cream parlor that shined in years past and is now resting on its laurels of being "a Fairhope institution". This place is truly "meh, whatever" to me. I'm not trying to be a hater--honestly! It just isn't that great. The Fairhope Float didn't taste like anything to me except old, lukewarm coffee and some out-of-the-can whipped cream. They have a typical selection of scoopable ice cream and some frozen yogurt machines. The fro-yo is typically the only thing I get when I'm in here. The inside seating is cramped and the interior decor makes me feel like I'm on an old set from the Andy Griffith show. There was a place called "Blast from the Part", a retro-themed malt shop, that used to be on Fairhope Ave when I was growing up that was much cooler. Come on Mr Gene! There are other more novelty places in town to go for ice cream fads but this is the real spot to go to if you want real Fairhope local feel. Stopped in here with my wife, in town celebrating our anniversary. Ice-cream is like any other, but the cofee drinks were incredible. I wish I could get their coffee here in Pensacola. Anyway, I had the Milky Way, and it was just absolutely one of the best tasting coffee drinks I've ever had. Would go back to Fairhope JUST for this. My wife had the Fairhope Float, and it was incredible as well. We were there on a Saturday night, and were very sad when we left Sunday morning and they were not open (although, I was glad they were observing Sunday morning as holy) Try this place out! On a Sunday evening after having pizza at that place over by the yard, we were feeling some ice cream.. well as you could guess, the Yard was packed and busy so getting our order in was not going to happen. We opted to walk a couple blocks to try out Mr Genes and I'm so happy that we did! I had the Cookie Monster which was made by Cammies old Dutch and dang that was some good ice cream! They were fast to take my order and serve up that ice cream, all in less than 5 minutes (meanwhile I probably would have been still waiting at the Yard). The porch is still open for seating. This is a great place to go if you're in the mood for some ice cream. I'm not a kid but I always get the kiddie cup. It's $1.10 and they over flow it with Blue Bell ice cream. They keep a few standards but like to switch it up a lot which is fun. We like to grab a small cup and walk around town with it. The outdoor patio is lovely and when it isn't crowded a great place to unwind and enjoy some ice cream. It's a great place to take children or even elderly. It's so family friendly and I love taking people here. It feels like an old ice cream parlor from years past. They are famous for their Fairhope Float. Great ice cream shop (regular and soft serve options)!! Priced fair and a cute shop. I love that there are at least 5 or 6 size varieties so you can get exactly as much as you want. I usually get myself and my now 5-year-old each a kiddie cup and while I always COULD eat more ice cream (if I ignore the tightness of my pants around my hips) I feel happy and satisfied even with the kiddie cup. There are about 15 different flavored of regular and I think even 6 more of soft serve so the variety is great. My only reason for 4 stars vs 5 was for lack of seating. They use one indoor room for a gift shop I've never seen anyone stay in for more than a second, and then have poorly placed tables inside that get crowded, whereas the beautiful outside deck could certainly hold 2-4 more table if they didn't let high school kids and others sprawl out and horde the few seats they have. A couple got up to give me their two seats the other night for my family (I was holding my baby and had my 5-year-old as well, but another family just sitting there snatched the chairs before we got there because they "might have others" joining them. Outside the teenagers were sprawled across or standing next to chairs they would not offer up even when asked and eventually two women offered extra chairs from their table so we could bring two chairs over to one of a few empty tables with no chairs. Lovely place overall but they need more chairs and, in a slow night let people linger forever, but if crowded, they could facilitate folks moving along when done (possibly some were friends with the not-so-warm high school kids working there?) read more

Stopped here on a school trip from the University of West Alabama. I was here with my girlfriend, another student and our advisor. This place is AMAZING. I had the Fairhope Float and a muffin. The Fairhope float was out of this world and I would give it a 11 out of 10. The muffin was great too. I would come back to Fairhope just to come to Mr. Gene's. Really great and helpful staff. Mr. Gene's Beans is a Fairhope institution! Ice cream, smoothies, coffee and candy galore. The Fairhope float is pretty much as close to heaven as you can get for 6 grams of fat or less - iced mocha coffee with a big swirl of vanilla yogurt in the middle, topped with whipped cream and sprinkles of your choice. The ice cream melting into the coffee and the frozen bits of coffee around the froyo is the best combination, creamy and delicious frozen coffee yumminess. There's a few rules you have to follow : "We dont speak starbucks", "no cell phones", "we dont take checks" (who pays for ice cream with checks?) but if you've been running a coffee shop as long as Mr. Gene I suppose you are entitled to a few rules here and there. read more

We spent $25 for a sundae and three drinks (two of which were bottled). What?!? The sundae had barely warm, runny hot fudge dumped on top but because the ice cream was so hard and the fudge barely warm, nothing wanted to mix and it was a sloppy mess. Interesting visit.... the ice cream is good, the yogurt which I actually wanted I assume is good as well. They do need to work on improving their staff. I asked about the yogurt and was listed off a few funny flavors. I then said well make the medium cup I desired with chocolate ice cream. As she puts the first scoop in the cup I comment that it is a pity they do not have chocolate yogurt. I am surprised when she says..."sure we do".... can you change it to that?.... nope...once they take the first scoop and put it into the cup.....they cannot change the order..huhhhh?... Is this real or just laziness. As I said....they need to improve their staff.
