A Toledo classic! I've been going since I was a kid. The ice cream is very good but not exceptional. Maybe 4 stars for ice cream of this style (soft serve), and it doesn't really compare to ice cream like Jeni's or Handel's, it's a different category. The lines can be long, and they're cash only. But once you get to the front of the line, the service is always friendly. But the art is amazing. All the hand-drawn pictures to go with the sundaes and the creative sundae names and toppings/mix-ins. Some of the sundaes are the same ones they served 30 years ago, others are new. The portions are huge. If I recall correctly, for a large cone they take it all the way down to the bottom of the machine (although I've never ordered one myself!) The cake sundaes are quart size. I usually go with a small or junior sundae and it's plenty. It's my go-to stop on the way home from Centennial Quarry in the summer, and one of the places that I take friends from out of town to give them a taste of Toledo culture. My first time stopping at Mr Freeze this year which is my Achilles heel for soft serve ice cream. A very popular location in the area for soft serve. Portions and size wise are very fare for the money.service is usually fast once you get to the window. Servers are always young lady's going to college and are very friendly. There's not a bad item on the menu which at one time or the other I have tried. My opinion the best place to have soft serve ice cream and many just hang out in the parking lot. read more

This place has 10000 great sundae options with great combination and a huge variety to choose from. The soft serve is very good. The portions are large. The staff are always very friendly. I have two main issues. Firstly, they are cash only. In this day and age, how are you cash only? They do have ian on site ATM, how convenient... For them. I'm sure they get a nice cut of the service fee. My second and largest issue, is the amount of topping- or rather the lack of. The ice cream to topping ratio is way off! If they don't want to put on a lot of toppings, maybe they should just adjust the size of the ice cream sundaes themselves. There are a lot of great ice cream shops in the greater Toledo area. I just don't think they can compete with my top favorite. I need generous topping, electronic payment option, and slightly faster service time. read more

Got a buckeye sundae for $4.25 and it was...ok? I didn't eat much of it, honestly. Vanilla ice cream with whipped cream on top and buckeye candies with just a small amount of peanut butter (and I didn't care for the flavor that much) and barely any hot fudge. Blah. I prefer The Honey Bear in Swanton for their Buckeye Sundae because they don't skimp with their toppings and flavors are better. I also didn't really care for the flavor of the ice cream. LACTOSE INTOLERANT PPL UNITE!! I forgot my lactaid pill. That was my biggest mistake. I was a little hesitant to try Mr.Freeze because of it. I asked a very nice lady at the counter to see if there is any lactose-free option available. She immediately pointed to almond milk vanilla ice cream, and I was still hesitant because American Vanilla ice cream usually has a very strong flavor for me. I thought I should still give it a try because I went literally two days before this place closed for the season. And it was DELICIOUS. Enough vanilla flavor was coming through while minimal almond milk was present. The perrrfect balance!! I was very impressed by the taste and I was sad that i didnt bring my lactaid pill to try other flavors. The price was the cheapest I've seen in a ice cream place in a while. I am definitely looking forward to the spring next year for its reopening. I gave 4 stars to reserve for next season to officially make up my mind. BEST ICE CREAM PLACE EVER! Their selections are unique and crazy, but so delicious that I could've sworn the flavors and toppings descended from Heaven. Yet, it you opt for a simpler ice cream selection, Mr.Freeze has that, too. One of my favorite simple ice cream orders here is the orange twist. I attached a photo below. Additionally, they have fun seasonal selections for adventurous people. I once bought a Leprechaun ice cream "assortment" and was not disappointed. Love this place! We come here all the time in the summer. It can't be beat! We love the Buckeye Sundae. It includes both peanut butter and chocolate sauces with buckeye candies (almost like peanut butter cups) and it is topped off with whipped cream. So yummy! They definitely know how to make sundaes well too since they are full of toppings from the bottom to the top of the sundae. There is also the option of making your own sundaes or flurry style creations as well. Also love White Mountain, Topsy Turvy, Banana Cream Blast, and Nutter Butter. This place is truly amazing, and worth every star it's got! I first discovered Mr. Freeze last summer, when I moved to Toledo. It is awful for my waistline, but that didn't stop me from going at least once or twice a week. As others have already commented, the portions are enormous and the regular size of some of the sundaes are served in quart containers!! Seriously, the quantity is ridiculous. The only thing more surprising than the quantity of ice cream and topping they give you are the unusually low prices. You really have to go there to believe the reviews, but it's as good as everyone says. When you do go (and you're crazy if you don't), do expect lines. But, there's a reason people are waiting in the lines. Before choosing a line, take a minute to see which ones are moving and which are not...all ice cream lines are definitely not created equal. When you get to the front of the line, be sure you've got cash ready, because they don't take credit. I love ice cream and there's nothing better than a soft serve ice cream stand when it opens for the summer months! I love the Buckeye sundaes and that is what I usually get although everything I have tried is delicious. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is that I've now had 3 orders done incorrectly...with the most recent being this past Sunday (4.1.18). This time the young lady forgot to add the Buckeyes in the middle (which was no big deal) but she had added crushed peanuts instead and the biggest problem was she didn't tell me about the peanuts. She did give me a container of Buckeye candies. I do not eat nuts/peanuts in food...in fact, I rarely like anything added to my ice cream. The exceptions are cookies, the Buckeyes...things that are large. Crushed nuts are just annoying. Needless to say, after a couple of spoonfuls, it went in the trash. The next night while out walking my dog I looked over and saw it was not busy and thought, "what the hecks"...I really was looking forward to that ice cream and this was our first visit of the season. The young lady at the window (Riley) was very friendly and apologetic. She got her manager(?) named Laura(sp). She offered to make me another which I gladly accepted. The service is always top notch, the area is always clean (both inside and outside) and above all the ice cream is a "looked forward to weekly treat". It's the perfect treat on a hot day, and the serving sizes are huge...like seriously ginormous. I always go when I'm visiting home! I save five stars for. . .well, for Mr. Freeze! The softserve is perfect: creamy and just the right texture. The portions. . .well, to say that they are "generous" is an understatement. The "baby" size is a medium most places. I hardly ever get anything but a "medium vanilla cone". . .it's 10 inches tall (counting the cone)! My companions often get a sundae. They have a wide variety, they're all good. They're all big. There's a low (or no?) fat "wow cow" that's almost as good as the regular softserve. The lines are sometimes long. . .but more than worth it. There is a reason so many people are willing to wait. This is one of the few places I would give six stars.
