If you're considering Alliance, don't…read more Roughly a year or so ago I hired them due to a leak coming from my chimney. After their inspection it was determine the flashing was in poor condition and needed to be replaced. This was done. About a month or two later the leak returned and some additional work on the flashing performed. Cut to earlier this year and the leak once again returned. Having lost faith in Alliance I went with another PDX-based fireplace and chimney company. On inspection they immediately asked who had done the work being going over how it was some of the worst, most incompetent/novice work they'd seen, went over the issues, and provided a quote for new flashing. Once work started and the Alliance flashing was removed it was then brought to my attention that not only was the flashing problematic but that the brickwork underneath it was eroded, quite noticeably so. While not Alliance's fault, this was called out as a contributing factor to the leak and should have called out when the original flashing was removed. Should have. They never brought it to my attention. Separate from work performed, Justin was pretty sloppy with communication and paperwork, as it would sometimes require 2 or 3 voicemails before I would hear back from him, as I'd notice issues with the quotes, and as I received calls from him from a few different phone numbers. There was also a tarp left wrapped around the chimney for a few weeks that he had no clue about. In summary: don't walk, run away. Between sloppy admin skills, bad communication, poor quality of work, and the willingness to do the bare minimum while covering up larger issues, I can't in good faith suggest Justin or his "team" to anyone.

I had our contractor friend take a peak after The Top Hatter reported all this last year, after I hired Top Hatter to clean out our chimney. The company I had hired the 2 years before, reported nothing of the sort. Our contractor friend agreed with Top Hatter's report, and said the price they quoted was fair. I misplaced the the quote/paperwork from last year. And wasn't even sure which company had made the report. I called Top Hatter the other week, inquiring if they are the company who had seen us last year. The lady who answered the phone was cheery, did a quick search for my account, and had all the notes from last year, in front of her, in the company's system, with in seconds. Not only was the cleaning $260 (two other companies would do it for $125) but the estimator claimed we needed to rebuild the entire thing, and claimed that water was leaking into our heating system in the crawl space. This was odd because I just had the heating system serviced and nobody said anything. Called back the heating guy who did an immediate inspection. He fools me things were great and no problems. Not even condensation. I then went to two other repair companies for the chimney. Both of them laughed at what Portland Chimney said needed to be done, and quoted me about $2500 in repairs and claimed it was not urgent, vrs an immediate need to rebuild and 12k in repairs. This is a dishonest company.

American Chimney was great not just by comparison but because they provided outstanding customer service and repairs on our 100+ year old chimney. Office management was organized and professional. All appointments happened as scheduled, were preceded with reminders, and followed-up with email check-ins or phone calls. Shawn took the time to sit down with me and explain all of my options. I had a lot of questions, and he answered them all. My family was committed to restoring our wood-burning fireplace, which had begun to crumble (pieces of brick and mortar were literally falling down the chimney). The chimney was also not properly drawing smoke. Shawn provided a thorough inspection and explained that our chimney failed inspection on multiple points. Necessary repairs would be costly, and he recommended a gas insert, which would be half the price of the repairs. Ultimately, we decided to pursue the wood-burning restoration, and Shawn helped us find the most affordable options. Though we were quick to add on a few accessories, including a fan (for increased smoke draw) and a smoke guard, he advised us to wait to see if these would be necessary. (There was no pressure to purchase unnecessary items). After letting the repairs cure for over a month, we built our first fire a few days ago and were thrilled to see the smoke draw up the chimney. The work looks great, and with the masonry restoration, the chimney emits more heat than before. We don't need to add the fan or the smoke guard, so we are grateful for Shawn advising us to wait.

Michael from American Chimney was the tech and mortar man and he was fantastic. A total pro. Safe, clean, efficient. He does excellent work and goes the extra mile for his clients. I feel safe and sound now, and ready for winter. I feel I can recommend these folks for your chimney repairs without getting ripped off. Another company said they would only rebuild the entire fireplace and chimney. We never intend to use the fireplace and just needed to protect it from weather and creatures getting in. (We couldn't afford a complete rebuild in any case.) Lifetime Chimney saved us! They completed some repairing so they could install a cover/ cap, and they pressure washed the chimney. Miguel did an excellent job and was very kind. When I first called in, I spoke with Brian who was incredibly helpful! I was worried when I called in, but Brian explained what they needed to do. He patiently gave me clear information. The chimney looks great and it makes the house look great. We're relieved to have it protected now. I would hire this company again!
