Ultimately, the cleaning was done well. With a big "but".
It was expensive. We did have a coating of kreosote lining the chimney requiring more than a sweep. (Or so I was told. Frankly, I wouldn't know how effective it could've been with a sweep) Regardless the chemical clean was done and removed the crud. $750 though? Pretty steep for 30 min.
More problematic was the kid they sent was obnoxious.
Called to announce, not ask, he would be 30 minutes earlier than scheduled. It was a work day and legitimately posed a conflict. After I explained this more than once I resorted to saying I'd be happy to reschedule which suddenly changed his tune and he'd wait. That discussion set the tone for the rest of the interactions.
Pointed almost accusatory questions, challenged me on when it had been maintained etc. The appointment was actually for an inspection so my expectation was that it would be a quick and simple assessment and options given. Not an interrogation.
In the meantime he's placing his dirty gloves on my white brick hearth and showing little concern for this.
He insisted I didn't need to move my furniture nor remove the debris and ash in the fireplace piling up if I chose to have him clean the chimney. Ignoring that I cleared the room ... I don't know how he expected to navigate his shop vac and other tools into the center of my living room sideswiping the light colored fabrics.
After covering my other pieces, I had had enough of the challenging conversation and his argumentative attitude. With approval to clean it, he performed the job, I paid him and he proceeded to condescendingly "remind" me again to have it done more frequently as he left.
My house has smelled like ash and smoke for more than 24 hours. I've opened windows, ran a fan etc.
Again I'm sure the work was done correctly but I would skip the young, petulant know-it-all and ask for somebody with better customer service skills. read more
