Running late, but called us to notify. Clearly a man of few words, Allen got right to work. We knew we were overdue, so it took quite a bit of cleaning. Although hard to contain the dust, Allen seemed to do his best keeping the mess down. Aside from a very thorough cleaning, he rearranged a couple wires and a box that apparently weren't placed appropriately. I asked for an overview of how the system works and it was explained simply. I have a gas stove insert in my fireplace and I needed it cleaned it's been over 5 years since I had it serviced. I called today, a legal holiday, and the nicest lady returned my call. She gave me the cost for maintenance of my gas fireplace and let me know that cleaning takes care of the problem I'm having 95% of the time. All the other businesses I've called gave me a much higher maintenance fee or wouldn't give me an actual cost until they came to see it (charges for the initial visit). Update: Allen did an excellent job! He cleaned and repaired loose connections. He also taught me about my unit, i.e. it will work even if my electricity goes out, I don't need to turn the fan off after use (just set to favorite level and it will go on and off automatically). When I told him I wanted to use the fireplace to reduce my gas bill, he suggested and put in a fireplace thermostat to decrease waste. Total changes: $199 for cleaning and maintenance, $40 for the thermostat. Excellent service and price. Highly recommend Allen the fireplace guy! read more

Today Allen is doing a yearly inspection and painting my fireplace box/surround trim. I found Allen on Yelp as my fireplace wasn't working last year. I had a hard time trying to find anyone that does maintenance on a more than 20 year old gas fireplace. I looked at replacements but found them too costly. I'm so glad I found Allen. Last year Allen got my fireplace working and helped fix some electrical issues with the wall switches. The previous owners had built a fake rock facade that wasn't my style, so I removed it. Things I loved: 1. Thoroughness: corrected mistakes from original installers including swapping out AC switch w/DC version; testing wire connections and correcting/replacing them as necessary. And lastly, checked the outside vents 2. Professionalism. Getting down to the business instead of a lot of chit-chatting. I know some people like that, but I really appreciate his directness and getting down to business. 3. Value: for the amount of work accomplished at the price point, I'd say Allen the Fireplace Guy is possibly the best bang for the buck I've dealt with in many years. You really have to be kind of ignorant to not use him to maintain your gas fireplace just on the what he charges you for the work. Sure, he may make a mistake on occasion; I'm sure there's a review out there calling him out on that, but so does every other outfit. From a risk to benefit perspective, I'd say at least take a chance on him. You can always pay for a more expensive service later on if it really doesn't work out. We were actually quoted north of a thousand to do the same sort of work by another company; that's called "5% for parts and the rest to pay for a new rig and property in Sun River". 4. Clean-up. I have never seen both my gas fireplaces so clean! He scraped off some loose paint and vacuumed all the accumulated dust everywhere! 5. Flexibility. We were able to reschedule in short notice with no push-back. Things I didn't love so much: 1. I wish I had known about his services years ago. 2. People will still be Googling for those companies with snazzy online presence and websites to service their fireplaces, because "paying more must mean better value", no? No. It doesn't. It just means you get to pay for better-looking webpage and nice wraps around the work trucks. read more

The two gas fireplaces in our house never worked properly, after we bought it. We finally called someone to repair it. Allen showed up in the estimated time, and he then spent an unbelievable amount of time going over the fireplaces! Meticulous and methodical, which are two *fantastic* traits when dealing with electricity and gas. The gas supply line to the burner of our 25 year old Montego fireplace was broken. i called in atleast 5 fireplace repair/replacement companies in greater portland area to come and fix it. they tried to get the part from the manufacturer and then recommended that i replace the fireplace as the part was not available. the estimates varied from 5000 to 12000$. Allan was my last hope. after i sent the pictures of the broken part, i was surprised to hear from Allan that he can fix it. He repaired the broken part, was extremely diligent, took 2 hrs to complete and test that his fix worked. then he gave me a summer discount of 50$ without asking and i paid 160$. In the whole of Portland/Hillsboro/Beaverton greater area there was no company that wanted to fix the broken supply line, all were interested to replace the entire fireplace. Allan is among the rare breed of simple, humble, honest and perfect hard working workers who know their trade to the finest level. Allen was great! We moved into our new house and the gas fire place wasn't working. The previous owner said "he hadn't used it in years". Allen came and clearly has been doing this a long time with tons of knowledge. He was able to tell me about the model of the fireplace (just some interesting historical tid bits), took it apart and cleaned the whole thing so it looked brand new (including cleaning our years worth of spiderwebs from the gas piping), and gave me a tutorial on how the fire place worked, safety settings, lighting the pilot light, etc. Pricing was incredibly reasonable, particularly since he looked at two fireplaces for us. My husband and I love to have our first cup of coffee in the morning watching the wild birds eating suet outside the window while we sit in front of our toasty gas fireplace! When ours started having problems igniting in the morning, I called a trusted Heating company "Wilfert Heating and Air Conditioning" knowing he did not do gas fireplaces but figuring I could trust he would recommend someone as trustworthy as he. He gave me the name "Allen The Fireplace Guy". I called and made an appointment with Joanie. She was so friendly and knowledgeable. Allen came at the appointed time and carefully set about to investigate our problem. He was greeted by the roar of barking from our 3 rescue dogs and didn't blink! He came in and knew at once what the problem was. He fixed our furnace and cleaned and polished it up. When I looked at the fire, I felt like I had just cleaned a pair of dirty glasses and could see again. Beautiful Job! I said I wanted to have him start coming every year and he said if I called in May June or July there is a $70 discount!
