I really liked this place. Stopped by in the late afternoon and found the cases about half empty. This was to be expected so no issue there. We went to the Riverside location on separate occasions for both coffee and pastries. The coffee is not good. Not much to say beyond that. To be fair, this is a bakery, not a coffee shop, so no real ding on them on that front. The pastries are OK. Honestly, nothing to write home about. My issue with the place was service and atmosphere. The place is sterile. It smells like a doctors office, not a baker. It's cold. Not inviting. You don't want to spend time here, and maybe that's the goal. Get your crap coffee, your mid slice of cheese cake and move along. And to be honest, that last bit tracks real well with the service. I've never seen a staff that so obviously hate their jobs as the cashiers at Mr. Baker's Riverside location. I say "cashiers" because they're definitely not barristas, given the garbage coffee, and they're not bakers, given that all the pastries are pre made, pre packaged and out on display and there's not an ounce of the pleasant smell you'd expect from a bakery. Honestly, I had to bounce over to my local Jimmy John's because I yearned for the smell of fresh baked anything after leaving the polished concrete and hospital white halogen lights of Mr. Baker. You'd think that with a relatively new store, you'd have fresh staff, invigorated and ready to go. That's not the case here. The staff treats you like you're an annoyance, like you're interrupting their busy day of not baking. We asked for a couple of paper plates for our pastries (we ordered 4 slices of different items) and the cashier, irritatingly handed us one, and gave us a look as if we're lucky we were getting that. The thing is, Riverside is saturated with great coffee shops. Toasted, Condron, Arcade - with great newcomers (I'm looking at you you delicious Cuban SoB's) popping up every year. If you want our sweet sweet coffee/pastry money, you have to do a lot better than hospital-esque atmosphere and service with a passive aggressive frown. read more

When I initially placed the order, I was told that I needed to pay one week before the pickup date. I attempted to call the bakery multiple times on Sunday, which was the cutoff day for payment, but no one answered the phone. I followed up on Monday, and suddenly I was told that the cutoff was Sunday and that I should have paid by then. I explained that I had tried calling the day before and even offered to provide timestamped screenshots of my call log showing my attempts. After sending the screenshot, they asked for additional screenshots showing multiple calls, which felt unnecessary since I had already shown proof of my attempt. During this conversation, Victoria, who handled the situation, was extremely rude and aggressive on the phone. Her tone was unprofessional and dismissive. What made the situation even more confusing was that after reviewing the screenshot, she told me that even if I had provided proof earlier, it would not have made a difference because they were only checking whether their phone system had issues. Yet earlier I was accused of not calling and even told that I had lied After two days of back and forth and a very unpleasant interaction, they ultimately said they would refund the payment because of the situation. Overall, the customer service was very poor, communication was inconsistent, and the interaction felt unnecessarily hostile for what should have been a simple issue. We did choose to sit in arm chairs with a coffee table instead because the regular tables were either occupied or dirty. We ordered about seven different pastries so we could try them. The crème brûlée had no resemblance to a custard. Most things we ordered, had absolutely no flavor. They were dry. The cupcake had holes in it, and there was more frosting on the top of the cupcake, then cupcake. There may be some sort of stabilizer in their whip toppings that makes them funky. This place has the most amazing scones, tarts, and lattes! Every time I go to Rancho Cucamonga I must come here for my chocolate scone fix. I was in the nearby area and decided to look up "bakeries" to see if I was missing out on any delicious sweet treats. Turns out, I've overlooked Mr. Baker for quite some time! So glad I was able to come across their dessert shop and try a few selections of their cakes. Apparently they have a storefront in Rancho as well as one in Brea. It seems like the cakes are made in-house, from the very large open kitchen and huge ovens - but the cakes also look so uniform and exact that maybe they make them in bulk elsewhere? Either way, the cakes taste amazing. I was drawn to this bakery because of the honey almond cake, but I was told that that flavor selection was discontinued awhile ago. Super hard to pick from the plethora of choices - but I saw several reviews that raved about the double chocolate cake. And since I assumed that one would be a little heavy, I also chose the mixed berries to hopefully even out the chocolate taste. So glad that I tried these selections! I have to say that the double chocolate cake is one of my favorites - decadent, delicious, and so rich. I'm a fan of chocolate cake, but not chocolate cream - and yet I couldn't stop eating it! For $5.25 a slice, the pricing isn't too bad. The cake was pretty moist and had a great amount of chew in each bite while the cream was light but still packed a punch in taste. Ended up ordering this again the next time I visited because we all enjoyed it so much. The mixed berries was also really nice. I was hoping it would compare to Porto's, and I think it's pretty close except that the cream from Mr. Baker's is more light and airy while the cake still has that moistness and sponginess in each bite. Good amount of berries that added some tartness to the dessert, and I really appreciated that they packed a lot of cream so you get a good amount of both cake and cream in each bite. And we had to try their tiramisu. I believe it's also $5.25 a slice - it's pretty tasty but you can really taste the sweetness and heaviness of the dessert. There's a ton of cocoa powder on top, and as you take bite after bite, you can't help but hate yourself for continuing to eat and yet not want to stop. I probably wouldn't order this again and go with something different the next time I visit, but if you're a fan of sweets and tiramisu, give this flavor a try! They have rainbow cakes, even a build your own cake selection where you can mix and match 8 different slices for a cheaper price. They sell whole cakes for around $30 and up, but if you enjoy exploring various flavors and trying different desserts, that build your own cake option is super nice. The slices of cake all look so uniform inside of the plastic covering that I almost expected the cakes to taste stale and artificial, but I was surprised by the moistness and richness of the flavors that I tried. There's coffee, cupcakes, macarons, pastries, etc. This place is definitely a hidden gem for bakeries in Rancho; they're located in the Ross and Old Navy plaza - right by the Farmer's Market that they have on the weekends. Parking lot is huge, so that's never a problem. Workers are pretty friendly but they always seem to want you to hurry and order so you can get in and out. No minimum on card. tl;dr - A new favorite place for cakes! Highly recommend their double chocolate cake and the mixed berries cake. Will be back to try more items ... very soon. read more
