Upon meeting him I automatically got that gut feeling that the guy was going to be a problem as soon as he walked up he was complaining, complaining about how everyone calls him in December (we are in December) and no one calls him in the summertime. It's amazing what a little bit of service does for you. Mr. B is the man. No shenanigans and straight to business. We had a quick chat on the phone and I asked him for an estimate for general sweep and inspection. He gave me a number. None of that, "I need to inspect first to give you an estimate" and waste everyone's time. He came, he did the job, and he charged me what he quoted. Done deal. And honestly, this is the first time this chimney was cleaned in at LEAST 20 years. Yikes. Even better? As he was working, he noticed little issues here and there and just threw it all in for free - he replaced my damper clamp, he gave me a gas valve key. Since I'm fairly new to owning a chimney, I asked him for care tips and he sat me down to walk me through it. My favorite part of the exchange was when I asked if I should call him back annually and he told me not to bother - that if I intend to use it moderately to check with him in about 3 years. We moved to our house 1.5 yrs ago and we haven't had the chance to use our fireplace because our cats used it as there 2nd litter before we were able to put a cover on it. He was doing a clean and inspection but the seller was late, didn't clear the space in front of fire place and some other things so Mr B left. He called me to tell me why and said once I owned the home to call him back. He also suggested to update the logs and saw on Amazon there was a good deal for top end logs. We moved, settled in, and called him back. He did the sweep, inspection, and installed the logs at no additional cost. I would recommend his service in a heartbeat with a caveat of respect his time and experience or he may just walk out of a job. He stays fairly local so keep that in mind depending on where you are calling from. Pro-tip - best to call during summer / pre-holiday times as he said he is slammed during those winter months. Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience with this man, Mr. B. I originally called him out back in October for two things. First, to clean a fireplace and metal flue. Second, to repair and seal a leaky chimney. At first, his prices were reasonable. I told him that I could only cover the cleaning for now and I will have to call him at a later date for the chimney repair. So, he does the cleaning. After he's done, he comes to me with a chuckle and explains to me how the flue is old and falling apart and that the fireplace is not to code. He then asks for his check. I then inquired why he is telling me this now and not before he cleaned it. Why bother cleaning it when it needs to be replaced? Even though that was annoying, he gave a good price for the chimney repair. I called his secretary a couple of days ago and she had indicated that he is busy, but he can do it after the new year, no problem. I told her that was fine, no big rush. She scheduled a date. That evening I get a call from Mr. B. He says "I have to turn down your job, too busy". He was not apologetic at all and very condescending, stating that I had lost my chance. Total jerk. What a waste of time. I scheduled an appointment with Mr. B two weeks in advance. In my phone conversation with him I told him that we had a Spanish clay tile roof. He said, "No problem. I handle those types of roofs all the time. I'm careful to put padded 2 x 4 boards up and walk on those to get to the chimney." I also told him that the chimney itself had not been swept in the two years that we have lived in the house. He said "No a problem". The day before his visit he sends me a text message to confirm. I replied and said yes we are looking forward to seeing you, also wanted to see if you could repair to bricks that have come off the chimney. On the morning of his visit, Mr. B pulls up in his van and looks up at the roof and with a very obnoxious tone of voice says "Whoa! You didn't tell me the roof was gonna be tile, I have so many appointments today that I don't have the time to climb that!" Feeling very frustrated with his first impression I tell him, OK well can you please come inside and have a look at the chimney for cleaning. He walks into the living room looks down the chimney and it says "oh man! This is going to take me a couple of hours to do. I have too many appointment today and this will take too long." With that he grabs his bag he says he has to go and just think that he's gone. He doesn't offer to reschedule on another day, he just leaves. What a waste of time. In the two weeks that I was waiting for him I could have scheduled another person to come through and have the work done. Be warned, this guy is not sticking around to do thorough work. He stacks his appointments and goes for the cheap easy jobs. Most likely rushing through those and not giving me the detail that they need so he can move onto the next appointment. What I mean by that is that he put towels all over our hardwood floor to make sure he didn't scratch or dirty it as he worked. He explained how he was going to clean the chimney and began right away. He was punctual and used covers for his shoes and layed down drop cloths to avoid a trail of mess. We just moved into a new house so we didn't know what was going on with our fireplace. I read all of the reviews and at first it was a little unsure whether to call him or not. I did and ended up scheduling an appointment with him. When he came out he saw that I was not prepared for his services yet he did not charge me for his visit. Instead he gave me names and phone numbers of people that could help me out with what was missing so that I could have a working fireplace. He gave me tips and even the names of parts that I was able to buy myself and have somebody install for me. When I was finally ready he came back out and did his work. He is super pleasant and kind. I even told him about the yelp review but said that he discriminated because of the home being in Compton. He laughed so hard that it was even amusing. He then said I'm in Compton all the time and looked puzzled at the fact that somebody could imply such a dumb thing. I have found that often times the complicated and difficult ones are the customers. In working with him I did not find one part of him to be unpleasant, unprofessional, or untransparent.
