Extremely disappointing experience. I will never ever recommend this place!!! I came here with a friend expecting a decent meal, but the entire experience was frustrating from start to finish. I ordered the $16 tomato and egg noodles, while my friend ordered the $17 zhajiang noodles. Before ordering, I specifically asked the owner whether I could get a noodle refill. He told me yes. After I finished my noodles, I asked for the refill and was suddenly told that only the zhajiang noodles could be refilled. If that is the restaurant's policy, it should have been clearly explained when I asked before ordering. Telling a customer "yes" first and then changing the answer after they have finished their meal is simply poor communication and poor service. The service was the worst part of the experience. My noodles took an unnecessarily long time to come out. More importantly, I felt that the owner treated me noticeably differently from my friend. He was friendly toward my friend but cold and impatient toward me, which made me feel genuinely unwelcome. I understand that tipping is customary in the US, but customers should not feel that the quality of service depends on how much they order or whether they leave a tip. I came here as a paying customer and expected basic courtesy. The food was also nowhere near worth the price. My $16 tomato and egg noodles were extremely basic, only noodles with tomato and egg and they sell it for $16!?? The flavor was nothing special and certainly did not justify the price. My friend's $17 zhajiang noodles had very little meat, and the meat was chopped into tiny pieces. For nearly $20 after tax and tip, this level of food is simply not acceptable to me. The value is poor. $16-17 for a basic bowl of noodles can be reasonable if the food, portion, service, or overall experience makes it worthwhile. Here, none of those things stood out. The ambiance was also underwhelming. There was nothing particularly comfortable, welcoming, or memorable about the dining environment that would justify the price. Combined with the poor service, the atmosphere made the meal feel even less enjoyable. What makes this experience especially frustrating is that I hadn't eaten all day. I came here genuinely hungry and looking forward to a good meal, only to leave feeling irritated and disappointed. There are plenty of other Chinese noodle restaurants in the area where I can spend $16-17 and actually feel like I received a meal worth paying for. For the price, the food is mediocre, the value is poor, the ambiance is unremarkable, and the service was unacceptable. Customers primarily order on the self-service kiosk. Staff briefly appears to bring the food and immediately return in the kitchen. The food was ready in four minutes. Crazy fast!! As mentioned, I ordered the "Beef Brisket Over Rice" ($10.99) with added Chicken Drumstick (additional $2.49). The meal is cheap & filling. Unfortunately, it's not very flavorful nor memorable. It all tastes like a reheated premade bowl from a convenience store. It's a hearty & affordable meal, but the protein has that dry aftertaste. Fortunately, the rice tasted fresh and hot. All in all, it's not bad. On ambiance, Joyness Eating (San Gabriel) is well-maintained. There's about five tables, and the location felt fairly clean. There's a gender neutral restroom, a big bottle of hand sanitizer, restful music, and a self-service water station. It felt comfortable.
