I am so excited to have found Moya! I love Ethiopian food and this location has fresh, healthy, food, delicious Injera. We ordered the Veggie Sampler and the Doro Tibs to share. Large enough for 2 people, plentiful Injera. I went with Med spice but it was not that spicy at all. Will definitely be back!

I went here recently with my uncle. He is a longtime vegetarian and I am a vegan. We both opted to go with the veggie combo. Hearty and flavorful. Very friendly service. It was busy with good reason when we went here. Highly recommended for tasty Ethiopian cuisine in San Francisco served with warm hospitality.

Moya is a nice Ethiopian place downtown. It's a bit hard to get to because it's not near many things, but a very nice shop with a good ambiance and a very sweet owner. When I went with a friend, we got the vegetarian platter and their classic chicken dish. I unfortunately have to say that it was just okay. The vegetarian dishes were very good and the bread was flavorful and fresh, but the chicken was a bit dry and not as flavorful as I would have wanted. While this is a perfectly serviceable Ethiopian spot in a pinch, it doesn't beat my favorite in the city. But I would definitely still recommend giving it a try just to chat with the owner and experience some authentic Ethiopian food if it's close and convenient to you.

Moya is a superb spot for Ethiopian food in this part of the city. Came here after another spot nearby was closed unexpectedly and so glad we did. We came right as they opened for dinner so the service was quick and easy. The food came out in less than ten minutes and what a feast it was. The vegan sampler platter was enormous contrary to the photo of it looking like a grain bowl. Everything on it from the greens to the lentils was full of flavor and absolutely delicious. Enough to feed 2+ people for sure. I also had ordered a spicy tofu dish as well and THAT was something else. I don't see tofu being used often in Ethiopian restaurants but this was really a hit. Savory, spicy, and filling. Our meal came with a side of injera and I was shocked at how fast it came out too. The quality of the injera was great too and made for the perfect vessel to get all the tasty food in our mouths.

We were here last summer. Really excellent food. We didn't realize how big the portions were and ordered too much! We had the vegan platter and siga tibs. Minus the salad, the injera, wats, and beef were delicious.

I'm glad to see that they're still thriving after all these years. This is one of my favorite places to get misir wot, and their portions are massive. The injera that comes with your order is also one of the fluffiest and tastiest you can find. They're happy to give you more if you ask as well. Everything is spiced perfectly. I wish I lived or worked closer.

We were in SOMA and it was dinner time so a visit to popular Ethiopian spot Moya. They were very busy with a constant flow of DoorDdashers. The staff are work hard to keep up but manage to keep orders flowing. The vegan sampler is generous and delicious with fresh salad on the plate. The chicken was tasty but lacked the flavor punch of typical Ethiopian fare. Injera was fresh and spongy, served on the side.

Vegan sampler, Doro tibs & collard greens, Berbere, brown rice, injera.

CONSISTENTLY EXCELLENT flavors. Thank you for ALWAYS including the Berbere spices. I will always order here. Thank you for your kindness and consistency.

ordered the vegan sampler to go; for under $20, it made a super filling and flavorful lunch. i can't wait to try their other dishes. injera was tender and they gave a perfect portion.

Visited Moya for the first time on Friday December 27th. I went with my husband and a friend of ours. We showed up a few minutes after they had opened. It's a very bare bones restaurant, and you order/pay at the counter. The woman working was very nice. We ordered: - gursha injera rolls - ayb homemade cheese - vegan sampler - shuro - mushroom tibs Our order came with a giant basket of injera for enjoying everything. The standouts for us were the gursha, shuro, and mushroom tibs. Everything was great, I can't wait to go back.

    Vegan Sampler! Very tasty

Tried this place for the first time this weekend and found myself ordering again a few days later. The food is very tasty and filling. I ordered the veggie sampler and the beef one. I love the combination of the two. Although, I feel like one order is more than enough for one meal. Therefore, I end up with left overs for 2-3 days. Either way, very happy & satisfied. Ordered via door dash. I wish they were on Uber Eats.

They're open! For dinner only, but I would call ahead just in case because sometimes they aren't lol

How greasy is the food? What kind of cooking oil is used?

We try to use as little oil as possible. You can have tibs dishes prepared without any oil, if you’d prefer. We use canola oil.

I ordered the Kantishara spicy mushrooms cooked with onions and tomatoes over injera bread with green salad. OMGoddess. Perfect meal alert! If forced to choose one favorite cuisine from around the globe, I would likely select for myself Ethiopian and Eritrean food. No insults meant toward any other cuisines. However, as a vegetarian that can be vegan-friendly, and as someone who can appreciate the effort and care required for food preparation, this is food that I cannot replicate at home. I'm not a huge mushroom fan and here I am glowing after eating a healthy portion of this delicious dish, kantishara. The green salad is nothing special and yet when lightly dressed and paired with the mushrooms using the spongy injera bread as the "utensil," magic happens in my mouth. The injera itself is mild and fresh and unlike anything else in western cuisines. This food tastes like it was perfected over millennia by the most skilled cooks, and it literally was, which is another mind-blown eating experience. Yogurt at extra charge is available and some might find that a nice cooling addition to the "spicy" but not "hot" taste of the kantishara. I didn't need it everything was delicious. Service is kind and again, not why you come here. It's all about the food.

It's low-key, relaxed, and focused on what matters most: flavorful Ethiopian food served on injera meant to be shared. We ordered a spread that hit all the right notes. The Veggie Combo for One was colorful and hearty, with a mix of lentils and vegetables that were well seasoned and deeply comforting. Each scoop tasted distinct, and everything paired perfectly with the tangy injera underneath. It's filling without feeling heavy and a great way to sample multiple dishes at once. The Zigni stood out with its rich, slow-simmered beef and warm spices. The sauce was bold and aromatic, soaking beautifully into the injera. It had that classic depth you want from Ethiopian stews and felt especially satisfying alongside the vegetarian dishes. We also had the Tibsie Chicken, which added a nice contrast to the stewed items. The chicken was flavorful and savory, and it balanced the plate nicely with its slightly lighter texture. Extra injera was a must, and we were glad we ordered it. Everything on the table invited scooping and sharing, and having more injera just made the experience better. The atmosphere was calm and unpretentious, making it easy to relax and enjoy the meal. Service was friendly and straightforward, and the whole experience felt authentic and comforting. If you're looking for a dependable Ethiopian spot in the Mission with solid combo platters and rich, satisfying flavors, Cafe Ethiopia is absolutely worth a visit.

I remember reading about chef/owner Eskender Aseged's back story in an old SFGATE article - how he escaped Ethiopia on foot with his family, how he started as a busboy at the legendary Square One, how he worked his way up at the tonier restaurants in town like Boulevard and Campton Place, and how he managed to open this place nearly a decade ago. It's quite an impressive journey, and I didn't know I was meeting him when I walked up to the counter to look at the menu. It was after 2PM, and he was busy in the back washing the dishes. He didn't hear me come in, so I cleared my throat. Yes, I know that was a rude passive-aggressive move. Although everything was tempting, I selected the $15 Saffron Prawns over Couscous with Vegetables and Chermoula (photo: https://bit.ly/3DPe4Fh). I didn't know chermoula was a North African variation on a cilantro-olive oil marinade with a discernible chili kick. The combination of flavors was quite delicious and surprisingly familiar, a bit like a Cajun-style seafood stew. The $3.50 Iced Hibiscus Lemonade was a refreshing complement to the homestyle dish, more compatible than a Coke Zero would've been (photo: https://bit.ly/3ran6aB). I heard he changes up the menu, but I hope the chicken jambalaya and pistachio baklava are still around for me to try. The ride on the T Line was pretty easy, as the restaurant is right at the Oakdale/Palou stop in front of the portrait mural of Barack and Michelle (photo: https://bit.ly/3uSJPsQ).
