Amazing place for rock climbing in the area - the staff seems very helpful. This was our first time to rock climbing. We used the groupon for top roping 101 class and one month of unlimited membership. Scheduling the class took less than a minute over the phone. Luckily, we were the only 2 people in the class so we got to enjoy 4 climbs each. Our instructor Hannah was awesome. She taught us all the basics very well - we even passed our belaying test the next day very easily. Although we were finished with our basics lesson in 1.5 hours, she encouraged us to utilize full 3 hours of the class and get as many climbs during that time (1 extra star for Hannah). I would definitely recommend this place, if someone is looking for some good fun in the area or really want to pursue rock climbing as a profession or serious hobby. read more

I am partial! But this is my favorite climbing gym. It all started for me at this locale. The have the best climbing class I have ever seen anywhere. They staff is very helpful and they are on top of people being safe at all times. They have a great climbing store, good snacks, rest area and show some fun videos. There is a great variety in climbs and a whole area just for kids - adults can climb there too! There have a great deal of instruction here all very useful. I recommend going even if you are not in the area! It is worth the drive. read more

I go almost every day with my membership. Their prices are great for an annual membership of about 60$ well worth it compared to other gyms in the area. I drive about 25-30 minutes from my home to go but again, well worth it. The people there are extremely helpful with everything from gear to technique on the walls. They offer classes, parties, and daily rates if you just want to try it out. I started with their summer program of 150$ for the three months and got addicted to going. If you are looking for a great work out that's a lot of fun with fantastic friendly people this is the place to be. Its kid friendly but there are definitely more adults that are just having fun! read more

Let me say that my first experience went really well, and this is a really nice gym. The staff was friendly (not snobby like many gyms), the facilities were clean, and everything was well maintained. The reason for my 3 stars (I really toyed with 4 and would have gone 3.5 if I could) is due to the severe lack of beginner level bouldering problems. I am by no means a advanced climber, and traveling for work doesn't give me much practice time. I typically play on V2s and below and compared to other gyms, Valhalla is lacking. There is plenty of problems if you do, say, V5/V6 and above. V4 and below is quite scarce. Most of the problems are very technical and I was pretty let down. Not sure if I will go there the next time I am in town on business. read more

My family and I decided to check out the Cliffs at Valhalla after my nephew expressed an urge to try out rock climbing. The location was a little hard to find (don't Google Maps it, it gives you 15 Wall St.), but once we got there it was smooth sailing. For around $40, you get 4 climbs up a wall of your choice and someone there to help you out. The climbs kicked my ass, and I was sore for 2 days afterwards. Don't worry if you forget to bring the right shoes, they have everything you need to rent. There were some serious climbers there, but there were also kids trying it out and having fun. I took my son there for their "Friday Night Rocks" Kids event. I did it to see if my son wanted to have his 7th birthday party there...well we have been back every Friday since. The staff is fantastic and super friendly and more importantly KNOWLEDGEABLE. He loves going and is really looks forward to it every Friday. The price is great for a 2 hr drop-off. We will be having his birthday party there for sure. read more

I drove past the Cliffs on the way to work for the past few months and always wondered what was going on inside. I stopped in to take a peek and I was hooked. I bought a gift certificate for me and my wife for Christmas. We took the beginner class and found it to be essential...and fun. We now climb 3 to 4 times a week (after work its open until 10pm). The staff is very helpful (some are very young but strong climbers) and the members are all very friendly. Our membership package is roughly $100 a month for both my wife and myself. Great value! I would highly recommend taking a look at the gym, asking a few questions and maybe signing up for a beginner 101 class (most are on the weekend) to get an idea of what it takes to climb proficiently. This sport is much harder than I expected, but very rewarding. If you think you're strong...think again. read more

Took my 7 year old here. It's a decent value at $20 for about an hour. Too bad the staff here are clearly coming from a Phish concert or some hippie drum circle - watery eyed and such - and don't want their mellow harshed. "Instruction" constitutes 21 year old who works here on weekends holding a rope while my kid dangles in utter confusion. update: found a great guy willing to help and not just stand there rolling his eyes. Right off the bat let me say that I am NOT a climber. My friend and I took the Rock Climbing 101 class to try something new. We had a lot of fun and though most of the class was on how to tie knots I got a great workout. Everyone seemed very accepting of us and the instructor's enthusiasm for the sport rubbed off on us. read more

Great place for climbing if you are a novice or expert lots of exercise by climbing and helpfull staff

Had my sons 7th birthday party there this winter. I paid extra for pizza, juice , and soda for the adults. I come to find NO juice as they "ran out" and was served one stale expired bottle of diet coke. No water served during the climbing part of the party which was 90 minutes before pizza, so all these kids are dying of thirst. The girls who ran the party kept apologizing, they were obviously embarrassed as well. I'm sorry but stop n shop is a mile down the road, one of the 20yr old staff members hanging out at the front desk should have gone and picked up apple juice and soda that I payed for in the package. Will not recommend this to my friends. Poorly run for birthday parties. read more

If you're stuck in Northeast for the winter, this is the best place I can suggest in the area. The Cliffs has great bouldering areas (yes, that's multiple bouldering areas!), wonderful top-rope and sport routes, and even an upstairs with shorter, easier climbs for newbies and/or parties. The routes are alternated regularly and the place is managed by knowledgeable, friendly staff. If you want a place to climb without egos, go here! As a student, I think you can get $50/mo memberships if you sign up for one year. Otherwise, I think it's $60/mo if you sign up for one year. And they've got some cardio and other climbing equipment (rings, campus board) so it actually could be your one-stop gym, especially in winter. The only bummer is the high-priced $16 day pass. read more

Had a blast rock climbing at The Cliffs at Valhalla. Wasn't to happy about strapping the harness on BUT hey safety first. Watching the kids (and some adults) climb up like superman was a bit intimidating but I gave it a try and glad to say I made it to the top! Lots of family fun! read more

Enrolled my 7 year old daughter in the spring break camp for a few days and can't say enough about how much she enjoyed it! She had never really climbed before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. She had a great experience and enjoyed the games and the climbing. Thanks to The Cliffs staff for making it a fun time! read more

In my opinion at the Cliffs at Valhalla there are some staff who are nice. And then the other staff who talk to their girlfriend who probably doesn't even work there and pays no attention, to you in which since he so intrigued in his girlfriend he can barely even notice that your falling 5 feet in the air and then landing, on a sharp rock, and you get a fat lip. Then there are others who probably don't call up their girlfriends and are like "I'm so bored can you come over and talk so that I can drop my clients and possibly kill them". Instead they are like "which wall would you like to do" and they actually guide you on which rocks to step on. Overall it is a very nice place to work out. Most of the time I have felt very safe there. They had so much contributions to the crash also. They took in over 200 people. But still, next time your at the Cliffs at Valhalla make sure to watch out for a belayer with a blue sweater. read more

I will NEVER be going to this gym again. I started going here when I was nineteen. I began a membership here about three years ago. A year ago I had stopped climbing so I called the gym to cancel the membership. At the same time, the automatic payments on my card stopped. This is an account I've had since 1987 and all of the other automatic payments I have linked up to it continued. Assuming the membership was cancelled, I went on with my life. Fast forward a year later, I return to the gym only to be told that I owed $360! The gym told me that I couldn't cancel by phone and that they had tried to contact me. Well, when I was on the phone with them, they seemed perfectly fine with me canceling! Why would I drive an hour and a half to cancel a gym membership? They claim they attempted to contact me. I ran a search through my e-mail and not one e-mail came up. They told me they called me. I check my voicemail religiously and have never received any indication from them that the cancellation didn't go through. They have my cell phone, my home phone, my emergency contact's phone number, and my home address. Yet somehow all of this escaped their notice! I work in the outdoor industry and I am asked about climbing gyms in the area on an almost daily basis. I used to recommend this gym to everyone I came across. Needless to say, I will no longer be doing this. When they're not running extortion schemes, they're a very unwelcoming bunch. For the first few weeks you attend this gym, be prepared to endure stares and to be avoided like a leper. I never realized just how bad it was until I began climbing at a different gym. The people at this new gym took me in immediately and were so excessively friendly that I wonder how I ever climbed at The Cliffs! Do yourself a favor and find a different climbing gym! This one is definitely not worth it. read more
