We went here for a friend's birthday. We loved the diversity of options, with automatic belays, numerous self-belays for those who are qualified, and a spread of bouldering options. The walls and routes definitely vary in difficulty.

I love my limited edition Cliffs tank top.

I have been climbing at The Cliffs at Valhalla since they opened a few years ago (and for many years before that. As an experienced climber, I am super picky, and do have some suggestions for improvement. However, if The Cliffs were to shut down tomorrow, I would probably lose my mind. Hence the 5 stars. Here's what's great. It's a climbing gym. That's not a given if you live in Westchester and not, say, Boulder CO. It's well designed and big, with plenty of altitude for a decent top rope or lead climb, and has three auto belays and lots of bouldering for when your partner is off coaching soccer for 10 year olds. It's got the logistics down. They have an easy to navigate website, which they keep up to date with events and announcements. Everything -- waivers, memberships, charges -- is done online. The staff is super friendly and helpful. So are the regulars (climbing is a friendly sport). The monthly membership fee is very reasonable and they give you a free guest pass once a month so you can introduce new potential belay slaves to the gym because your partner's soccer coaching schedule is out of control. Here's what could use improvement. The top/lead rope routes seem to be set mostly by teenage bouldering dudes with abnormal finger (and overall) strength but limited understanding of a true outdoor rope climb. My favorite climbs are thoughtful and precise, with delicate footwork and interesting moves. Also, there should be some variations in difficulty of moves -- crux move, then rest, etc. There are barely any rests, unlike true outdoor climbs. There's just one routesetter right now (PJ) whose climbs meet those qualities. The rest range from ok to not worth it. The bouldering is just ok. One thing I hate is that they've removed the ratings. Every climb outside is rated, so you know what you're getting into. Why the guesswork? Or, alternatively, the running back and forth between outdated photos of the walls with ratings and the walls. So annoying. But that's just the perspective of one short and somewhat out of shape climber, who is climbing 5.10s at this time. It may be a completely different story for stronger, younger, and/or harder climbing folk. Also, best to go early on weekends to avoid the never ending stream of kids birthday parties. I am grateful that these events help keep The Cliffs in business, but the screaming, etc. ... ugh ... One time, they even roped off much of the gym to create some kind of tightrope thing for a group of kids. It was incredibly annoying. They haven't done it again, though, so maybe they realized not such a good idea. It's also amateur hour with zero policing. People walking under ropes, taking photos, doing their douchey fitness rituals etc., kids running rampant thru the space with no parents in sight, etc. It's got the climbing gym atmosphere down to a tee. Friendly, helpful staff who all seem about 16 years old. Bare minimum locker room. Ratty couches in small lounge area with tv on endless climbing video loop for non-climbers/slackers to hang out. Small workout area, with a few cardio machines, a "woody" (it's not what you think), and hang board. Energy drinks and bars and equipment and climbing clothes for sale. Everything covered in a fine layer of chalk dust.

Love this place! I love climbing and the staff is great - this location is easy to get to. If you go during the weekdays early... It's not too busy. Weekends here are pretty crowded though.

Was visiting NY from California and stopped by this past weekend with my husband and spent two hours breaking in my new shoes. Facility is clean and well maintained. Customer service is top notch, the owner is a stand up guy and was a pleasure to talk to. Thank you for the new tanks, the girls at my home gym are super stoked when I brought back the shirts!!

I must be dumb. Valhalla is clearly the best gym in new york besides brooklyn boulders. They have so much bouldering it's ridiculous. Why would I even think the roc club had more? That place sucks so bad. I've only been climbing for the summer (almost 3 months) and I'm working V5's. Everyone here is so friendly. A lot of the people that work here I've become friends with. The problems are so good that I don't even mind climbing them over and over. There's also a little section in the cave with maybe 10 bouldering problems (a little hidden gem). Kootz is the best setter ever. PJ sets good shit that he thinks are V3's and V4's but they are really V5's and V6's. Don't worry the music is good. Don't go anywhere else (besides BKB) because Valhalla is the bomb. Plus if you had a summer membership then you get one month free off a yearly membership.

I'm very new to the sport of rock climbing so I don't have anything with which to compare, but I think this is a great facility. Located just off the Bronx River Parkway between North White Plains and Pleasantville, it's quiet on Saturday and Sunday mornings and pretty busy on Weekday evenings and Weekend afternoons. I recently bought a package for the 101 and 201 classes. The package also includes a free month membership. The 101 course was great. I completed the class with a nice foundation of basic climbing knowledge and took and passed the Belay test so that my husband and I can come and climb on our own/belay each other without supervision. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The space is large and there are many walls for climbing and bouldering. It's pretty amazing to sit back and watch the folk who are seasoned climbers. People weightlessly scale the walls like they're Spiderman. And even though, as a new climber I feel a bit like an outsider looking in, the Cliffs seem to foster a true sense of community and comaraderie among its members.

Climbing the pink route, "5.9+" was much too easy; more like a 5.7.

Amazing business who took in most of the affected passengers from the Metro Train accident. Good people right here.

The food items- chicken sandwiches, sliced sirloin, a rice dish, tomato salad and passed lamb chops were exceptional. Service was accommodating and the signator cocktails were excellent. The DJ was engaging and the room temperature was just right. I had not been to the space in years so it was fun to return to reacquaint myself with the venue. Parking and registration was seemless. Kanopi Will Cancel on You and Ruin Your Special Night…read more Made a non-cancellable, non-refundable reservation for Kanopi as a special treat for my wife's birthday over a month before her birthday, and paid the deposit. I also messaged Danny, the manager, that it was my wife's birthday, and that I wanted a cake with candle. Two days before the date I received yet another email confirming and advising that it was non-cancellable. Two hours after the last confirmation I received a call from Danny saying that they had to cancel the reservation. He explained that there was also an event scheduled that night and the event needed more space. He said that they had to cancel all reservations. I told Danny that was unacceptable in that I had a non-cancellable reservation and that the proper and ethical approach would have been to tell the people who had asked for more space, no in that the other areas had been booked with non-cancellable reservations. He offered to move the reservation to Friday and provide free wine. I said no, in that isn't my wife's birthday. I asked who made this decision, and he said the chef. I asked him to have the chef call me. Hadn't heard anything in 90 minutes, so I just sent a text saying better to cancel so I could make another reservation. They did refund my money. However, I feel this is unethical behavior on the part of the restaurant, and breach of the contract made. Truly disappointing behavior.

So what matters to you when staying at a nice hotel?…read more Service, bedding and shower. At least that's my list. The service was great. Very attentive and friendly to make sure you have what you need. The room is a bit smaller than a normal hotel room but no complaints. The bed is extremely comfortable and the room is nice and clean. The food was exceptional. Fish was cooked perfectly. The cheese cake was also delicious. So why only 3 stars? Because there was no hot water. It was Luke warm at best. And that's a stretch. There was no way to take a proper shower because the water never got to a comfortable temperature. There's a coffee machine in the room but no coffee. I could over like that, although I do need my coffee. But I'm happy to wait for breakfast to have it. But not having hot water is a basic need that I require when I shower.

Tarrytown House Estate -- A breakdown of basic housekeeping and room readiness…read more I rarely write negative reviews, but this stay was frustrating enough that I feel obligated to share it for other travelers--especially because the issues weren't minor "preferences." They were basic cleanliness and room-readiness failures that never should have made it past inspection. I arrived and checked in at approximately 10:00 PM after a long day and was looking forward to getting into a clean, functional room and going to sleep. Instead, the first room we were assigned was clearly not turned and not ready for occupancy. The bed was unmade, the sheets were dirty, there were towels left on the floor, and there was trash still in the bin. It was obvious nobody had done the standard housekeeping reset. We took photos because it was so blatant. We immediately returned to the front desk and explained the situation. To their credit, they reassigned us to a suite, which seemed like an upgrade, though it also felt like it may have been the only option left at that hour. Unfortunately, when we entered the suite it became clear this was not a true "service recovery" moment, because the suite had its own set of cleanliness problems that were honestly gross. In the suite: The coffee table was dirty, like it hadn't been wiped down. Several chairs were stained with a mysterious brown substance. Not "a little wear," but noticeable stains that made you not want to sit down. In the primary bathroom, there were pubic hairs stuck to the wall. That last detail is unpleasant to even type, but it matters because it speaks to the overall quality control. A hotel room at this level should have a baseline of cleanliness that makes guests feel comfortable. Instead, we were left wondering what else had been missed. Then there was the room readiness / maintenance issue. One of the televisions in the main bedroom didn't have the necessary cable/connection. We reported it to the front desk, which required another walk back through the property. The response we got was essentially: use the cable from the living room area. In other words, we were expected to troubleshoot and "reconfigure" the room ourselves to make a basic amenity work. At a property charging what this property charges and presenting itself as an upscale destination guests should not be: placed into a room that clearly wasn't cleaned, moved into a suite that has visible cleanliness issues (including in the bathroom), and told to do DIY fixes for basic functionality like a bedroom TV. I have spent many years in hospitality, so I don't have unrealistic expectations; mistakes happen. What matters is how they're handled. In this case, the pattern suggested a deeper issue with housekeeping standards and the room inspection process, and the "solution" provided still left us dealing with conditions that were unacceptable. Finally, what pushed this from "bad night" to "I'm leaving a review": I sent a message to the General Manager prior to checking out and asked to speak. It's now been several days, and I have received no follow-up from management or staff. A property that wants to protect its reputation and guest experience should take something like this seriously and respond. Bottom line: the grounds and brand may suggest a higher-end experience, but my actual stay was defined by rooms that were not properly cleaned, visible hygiene issues in the suite, and an unreasonable expectation that guests should troubleshoot basic in-room equipment. I can't recommend it based on this experience.

Great time here at the Rock Club…read more Purchased a Groupon and decided to visit on a Friday morning. Called ahead and the front desk staff were very quick in getting back to me to confirm that a belayer was available at that time. They also confirmed the Groupon over the phone. I went ahead and completed the required waiver forms online prior to our visit. Adequate parking was available at that time. The Rock Club (downstairs) shares its space with a with a tennis club, so make sure you follow the ramp down toward the Rock Club entrance and NOT the stairs whih leads to the tennis club. We arrived at around 10am and it was fairly empty. The Rock Club staff explained the process and set us up with climbing shoes. We were then introduced to our belayer who was awesome. Over the next hour, we tried climbs ranging in difficulty. The wall heights range from about 35-40 feet and the peg placement and wall angles vary throughout the climbs, making some more difficult than others. We even had some time to try some bouldering. Our belayer was great at explaining techniques and technical terms. She was very patient and very encouraging...though not "pushy" at all. After we finished, the staff was nice enough to show us around to see what else was available at the facility: childrens area, common areas, training rooms and weight rooms. May go without saying...wear comfy clothes. As a regular gym-goer, but someone who has NOT climbed before, this was a welcomed challenge. Certain muscles, particularly the forearms and core, may not be part of the typical gym regimen...but are very important in climbing...that being said, I was definitely feeling it the next day. Overall we had a great experience at the Rock Club. We will deinifitely look into other classes. Kudos to all the staff members there.
