A facility built for competitive climbing in mind. Walking in you are greeted by the 40-60ft head wall that is about 15-40 degrees overhung. GOAT is a hidden gem tucked away in Hackensack NJ. The GOAT Team is passionate and friendly. The facility is led by a talented USA and arguably world class Route Setter. And it shows! It is unlike any other facility in the tri state area, the climbing is proud, and demanding. The community is very welcoming and growing, there is a ping pong set up and tournaments haha! I have been fortunate to be invited by my friend that lives in the area, and have been coming from Brooklyn for the last 2 years ever since.

What a wonderful climbing gym! While I am not a boulder/climber myself, I was looking to spend some time with friends who are. Having only been to one other facility in the past, this place blew it out of the water! These are the tallest top roping setups I have seen. There are 3 different floors for bouldering, with the 3rd floor more child friendly for both bouldering and toproping options (it is also set up to hold birthday parties on the top floor). Second floor has some basic gym equipment with a few bikes, 1 treadmill, 2 barbell setups, and a captain's chair, along with an area for bouldering training. The mezzanine has a nice lounge area with a pingpong table if you are not gifted in climbing like me! Shoe rentals are cheap, only $3.30, and everyone new to the facility must participate in a quick orientation. I would say the parking lot is a bit small for the facility, so try to carpool if you are coming with friends!

Tough to say anything bad about a place like this. Price is absolutely fair for a brand new gym in this area. Rentals are cheap and affordable which they should be. Solid idea to allow climbers to use their own gear after properly checked of course. Belay test was handled well by the staff. Even retained some new info which was different. Setting is killer which I already knew it would be as I know UKC. Facility was setup well as well. Birthday parties etc out of the way of the general climbing public and in their own private area which I'm sure suits the parents well too. Easier to keep kids all tougher when they have a private space for themselves. Staff was kind and accommodating. Was impressed with the little items for sale on the counter as well. Not every place has certain items for sale and you never know the quality either but I was poised to make a purchase lol however I didn't. Next time perhaps. Gotta grab a sticker at the very least. The nail file boards were dope by the register. Cool setup on the second floor to oversee the bottom levels large climbing walls. And it's in a killer location as things considered. Right off the highway and surrounded by plenty of local food joints to eat a quick lunch for the day. Glad I got together with the gang today and drove out. I expected it to be pretty sweet and it was. We'll be back soon I'm sure. Great job G.O.A.T.

Goat Gym at 70 +

It's no secret (especially to those already in the bouldering/climbing community) that climbing activities can provide physical, psychological, cognitive, emotional, and even social benefits. Well into my 60's when I first heard about indoor climbing gyms, I was introduced to them by my partner and his daughter, herself a talented indoor and outdoor climber. For me, climbing was fun, but participation in it was infrequent. It wasn't until after the opening of Goat Climbing Gym in Hackensack (coinciding with my 7th decade and quite convenient to us geographically) that I considered myself a fully committed fan of the sport. This is owing, in no small measure, to the quality of the experience at Goat. We found a welcoming, knowledgeable and professional staff, as well as excellent opportunities to receive supportive coaching. Yes, the climbing community is known to be convivial, encouraging, and "chill" but we were surprised at how quickly we were made to feel "part" of said community. So very grateful!"

Came midday on a Saturday and was expecting it to be packed. It was somewhat busy but I never had to wait long to try a route. Lots of options for beginner level climbers. This day there were a lot of transverse routes; I was very happy about that! Decent sized gym area. Loved the local art on display and for sale.

There is also a solid training area with three Standard Interactive Climbing Boards (tension climbing, moon board) and a variety of campus ladders and hangboards. I hardly use the weights and treadmills area, but I know they do have them! I've also heard great things about their Wednesday morning yoga class, something along the lines of "best yoga class I've ever taken." The one minus star is their affordability and relationship to the community. They keep raising prices and making new Cliffs gyms. It's not the best, making themselves less accessible for people in their neighborhoods. Sure, they had a free trial for anyone in Harlem, but if the person wanted to continue? There aren't any financial aid packages or any community programs. They don't have discounted prices for kids/students, which is a huge miss. Climbing can be a great way to engage youth and be a confidence building activity. My old gym in Oakland had a Black Girls Who Climb club for local Black girl youth. What a miss that the Cliffs is not being attentive to the role they could play in our neighborhood.

So I decided to come here just to check it out before missing it out and regretting it that I could have gone in for free and would have to pay to come in the future... Btw, I heard that SRW was better than Steep Rock East (SRE), that's why I came to SRW instead of wasting my time with SRE, and I was right! I think it is a waste of time to go to SRE... The rating for this gym is: Meh, I have been to better climbing gyms in NYC The basement locker and bathroom lighting was super dim. I couldn't see much. Perhaps they should use higher wattage and higher colour temperature bulbs. The other reviews are right, there is no shower This place looks small and tiny. It consists of two sections for bouldering only: 1st Fl and 2nd Fl. Second Fl was just a short wall and about two dozen boulder problems. First Fl had taller wall and a cave. It had more boulder problems than the 2nd Fl At least the rating system is based on V's instead of colouring system. And the bouldering problems are more straightforward and less gymnastic than Vital's. I guess it was refreshing to try out other bouldering problems and style. Similar to needing to try out other restaurants after eating in the same place for long time... The gym had tall and clear windows that allowed natural light in. Passerby could see what is going on inside the gym and perhaps pique their curiosity. But, the design is quite similar to other gyms like: MetroRock Williamsburg. So, no awe from me! It was quite painful to find parking at this place even for a Sunday afternoon when parking was free. I had to park approx. 6 blocks away and walk to the gym... Definitely won't be coming to this place in the future when there are better gyms elsewhere in NYC...

For my introductory class, I signed up for their Core Pilates. It was really difficult to sign up. I had a hard time getting in contact with anyone (it took about 4 attempts). But when I finally did, the sign up process was easy. They had a lot of classes to pick from, including Pilates, Barre and cardio classes. I didn't realize when I signed up that this was a reformer class. I usually do mat Pilates, but there were a few other beginners in the class and the teacher was very patient and nice. The great thing about the reformer machine is that you can turn up or turn down the intensity of the workout according to where you're at. It does take more coordination than I'm used to being on the machine, but it was fun! The teacher helped make adjustments so I could get the maximum benefit, which I appreciated. The Hackensack facility was really nice and big. They had complimentary lockers and towels and the changing room and restroom were both clean. The membership is kind of steep at $279 per month, but they do have discounts for 26 years old and under an 65 years old and over at their other locations.

I can't believe there aren't more reviews for the AMC, and I don't mean the movie theater. This is the BEST organization if you love the outdoors and live in the northeast! I belong to the NY-NJ chapter (https://amc-ny.org) but AMC has 11 local chapters also in CT, DE, MA, ME, NH, RI, and the Potomac region (DC, MA, VA). AMC is the oldest outdoor club in the United States, and works to support and promote outdoor recreation & education, and environmental stewardship. The organization is filled with wonderful and dedicated people. Its trained leaders and volunteers organize SO many hiking, camping, backpacking, paddling, biking, rock climbing, skiing, snowshoeing, sailing. etc. trips; as well as offer instructional & skills courses, wilderness first aid certification, and fun outdoor events accessible to everyone and at all levels of aptitude - and mostly for free or at low cost! They also offer incredible guided adventure travel and trekking all around the world to places like Patagonia, the Himalayas, Scotland, Switzerland, Canada, US national parks, Italy, Greece, southeast Asia, the Balkans, Africa, New Zealand, Fiji, etc. etc. You don't have to be a member to join most of the activities, events and trainings, but membership gets you a significant discount to paid events and trips, as well as 20% off lodging at their huts, cabins, and campsites, and on AMC books/maps & merch. We have a family membership and it's totally worth it. I've stayed in several of their lodgings but am particularly fond of the Harriman Outdoors Center here in Rockland County, NY - you can rough it or glamp, as it has excellent facilities, and FABULOUS food at their dining hall if you don't wish to give up your creature comforts while taking in some nature. Events can be searched on their website: https://www.outdoors.org/adventures/ (There's also a way to set up an activities digest email to get notified of new postings, but I leave that for the devoted to find. ;)) The NY-NJ leaders also post many of their hikes and other events on Meetup.com so you can look there for activities to join as well. There is also a young members group for under 40s. The groups are very active and often organize multiple events per week. All are welcome! By the way I don't work for AMC - I'm just a very passionate member and advocate and outdoor enthusiast, and think more people should know about them! (Even as I want to keep this best kept secret to myself lol.)

Before working with her, I had never strength-trained. She taught me the mind muscle connection. As a runner with a few imbalances, I really value how she builds in mobility, flexibility, and functional strength so I move and feel better overall. In five months, the progress has been amazing. Monica plans every session thoughtfully, challenging but never overwhelming, and always tailored to my needs. Her coaching style is the perfect blend of clear instruction, supportive energy, and just the right amount of push. What really sets her apart is her holistic approach. As a certified yoga teacher, she brings mindfulness and stress relief into each session, making every workout feel like a full reset. And as a chef with nutrition certification, her advice and meal plans are realistic, sustainable, and never restrictive. I couldn't ask for a better trainer. Monica is knowledgeable, caring, and genuinely dedicated. I highly recommend her.

You need to get the facts straight first before you jump the gun on how friendly Frank was to me because that's simply NOT the case... My ID is 100% valid. Im retired like I told him several times This is what I clearly told Frank a year ago and he said that it was" no issue at all" ..So I ended up coming back to the club a year later to finally join up. He asked me for ID which I showed him, then he started to say oh didn't you come in here a year ago etc, so I said yes I did. He then tells me "oh your ID says retired you can join at the full rate" and "I told you last time that im not giving you the discount we offer ...(that's not true at all ), What he said was that it was NO ISSUE".. He started to examine my ID, hold it up to the light literally about 5 different times ,,,Not sure what that was about...I said Frank, " WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH MY ID- YOURE EXAMINING IT LIKE ITS A FAKE $100 BILL OR SOMETHING, I said is there an issue?????..and he says " OH NOTHING I WAS JUST LOOKING AT IT. He then continues to say he's not giving me the discount and he told me this last year. I said NO PROBLEM...I was leaving, asked him for my ID back, and he started taking pictures of my ID with his phone... Maybe you can clear that up for me Andrew..what was that about after I said no problem and was clearly leaving the club with my coat on. Why did he start taking pictures of My ID? I mean I could care less that you or him think my ID is not valid, I could care less about any discount, or joining your club..Thats not the point at all.. I just didn't appreciate the way I was treated..PERIOD. Its really as Simple as that..I hope this clears it up for you. My experience was not good.
