I prefer the longer hike which has a decent scenic trail that follows a small body of water that makes for some cute photos if you pick the right spot. Atop the summit there is the make shift memorial that has gotten so big it's beginning to get ridiculous! I'm all for the sentiments of such a memorial but just 4 years ago the amount of rock memorials atop were half of what's there today. At the rate people keep adding "rocks" it will almost cover the entire top taking away precious space to sit and enjoy a sunset. Visitors need to chill with leaving huge rocks at the memorial. Otherwise this is a lovely hike that's not too difficult but the climb to the summit is a bit steep, so much so you'll find ropes to help you at the top to climb some of the rocks.

The hike to the trail head was the confusing part. Once at the trail head it was only about .6 miles each way. I carried my bike past about 6 trees and each time I saw another tree blocking the trail. I came across a clean up crew that told me the downed trees went all the way to Green Haven. I was 3 miles east of Green Haven when the mess started. There is also debris along the entire section which I was fortunate not to get a flat tire. The cleaning crew told me they have only 4 people and they will try to hire a contractor to clear the trees. There is no way a crew of 4 people could handle this. It would take them months to clean it up. (July 10, 2026)

We got on the trail at the Brewster Trail head, which is located at Castle Park in Brewster. There is a small parking area for the trail right near the entrance. The trail is nice and wide and runs alongside a disused rail line (the Maywood line, which gave the trail it's name) and for part of it, you can see in-use Metro North lines on the other side. We went north from Tonetta Lake and enjoyed the quiet and the scenery. It's very peaceful. There are large sections where there is no shade, so in the summer it could get hot so make sure you bring a hat, wear sunscreen and have some water with you so you don't roast. I love having trails like this nearby, especially a nice new trail like this. The only thing that would make it better would be if it could actually connect directly to the Putnam Trail once it hits the heart of Brewster.
