I finally made it to this restored gem of a property! Mountainside Bakery and Cafe is a great place to stop before / after a Mt Wachusett hike, or just because! There is seating inside and outside. Inside you will enjoy a couple beautifully restored rooms with period appropriate decor. Outside you can sit on patio bistro tables, picnic tables, or Adirondack chairs on the expansive lawn. The staff was very helpful and made recommendations; pastries were fantastic. The Mountainside has light sandwiches, a coffee bar, and even a good beer & wine selection. The only negative feedback is that basic coffee was fairly pricey and my cup was not even close to full. I can't wait to come back and enjoy this setting in all of the seasons! read more

Easily one of the best bakeries in the area. Huge selection of homemade pastries and goodies -- apple cider donut muffins, whoopie pies, savory sandwiches, and homemade bread. The staff is friendly, charming, and helpful. We split an apple cinnamon scone, and it had a great lift with perfect consistency and flavor. The oatmeal was a great touch! The homemade everything bagel focaccia with homemade scallion cream cheese was delightful, and it was light and fluffy with the perfect crunch. Our chais were really yummy, and the 'mini' chocolate tart was huge and the perfect cap to a delicious meal! The restaurant is cozy and sweet and has lots of cute art and furniture to catch your eye. Very cute spot with indoor and outdoor seating. Sadly my husband and I got there at 2:03 on a Saturday, and the Kitchen closes at 2 (and live music had also just ended). I enjoyed an almond joy scone (great crunchy exterior and soft inside) and my husband liked the hummus. The banana bread, sunrise majesty light roast coffee and Americano were pretty good too. Came here after a hike at Wachusetts, such a great little eat in/take out restaurant/cafe. Plenty of seating outside with patio umbrella and benches or adirondack chairs. You can also sit inside but limited seating. They have a bunch of sandwiches including vegetarian and light brunch menu items. You can also see the baked goods behind the counter. We ordered the Turkey cranberry jam and herbal stuffing sandwich, which was absolutely delicious! The bread was so soft and fresh as well. The sandwich came with a snack size bag of chips and pickles in a separate container. We also got the bacon avocado tomato sandwich with grilled cheese as an add on. It was great but the bread and bacon was a bit too hard for me. The cookies was absolutely delicious, full of chocolate chip, soft and chewy. Definitely massive and enough for two people to share! Finally got to visit this place. Twice in the same day. First, was in the morning after dropping my son off at work in the area. Got myself an almond joy scone, a blueberry crumble bar, some of the Mexican pork soup and a black coffee. Both the scone and the crumble bar were pretty darn good. The scone could've been baked a little bit longer but it was very good. The pork soup made a marvelous lunch. Not too heavy, plenty of flavor. And the black coffee was wonderful. Bold, not too bitter. We went back in the evening to have pizza and beer. The pizza was OK. The salad was wonderful. And the beer was wonderful and wonderfully local. There was also wine offered. They offered pepperoni pizza and an herbed white pizza. We got both. They looked lovely. The dough was rather nice but it tasted kind of young. It would benefit from being made another day ahead. The salad was delicious. Light and acidic in the dressing. And the chicken added to it only made it better. We had the ricotta dip for dessert. It's a neat idea they could use a little more developing. When developing a cookie for dipping one needs to think about the size of the inclusions and making them dry enough so that they are friable dip chip. Maybe a little garnish on the dip itself. All in all, it was a great experience. They have wonderful ideas that just need to be further refined in their execution. But I am confident they will get there. I will definitely be going back to watch how this business matures. I have a feeling only good things are going to come out of here. The decor is absolutely wonderful. It's a very charming small space. And even though some of the guests in the room were dazzlingly pretentious, it had a very nice comfortable feel to it. The people working were super polite and helpful. Any questions were clearly answered. I would come back just for the people. The items packed and labeled for sale could use some labeling fine-tuning. Aesthetically, sure. But more in terms of content and getting the proper labeling elements to avoid issues. NFP, ingredients listed properly, etc. The dinner and drinks all said and done with tip was still under 50 bucks. I'm really looking forward to trying it again in the future. read more

The staff and team is so friendly and the drinks and food was amazing. The classic grilled cheese was to die for and probably the best grilled cheese I've ever had. I paired my grilled cheese with the soup of the day that had sausages and potatoes in it. One thing I missed most about my life in Boston was all the coffee shops I would venture to to get my work and studies done as a student. I started my morning with a iced caramel latte and soy milk and an apple cider donut muffin. The latte was perfectly sweetened with the soy milk and caramel. The apple cider donut muffin was something new for me that I tried. I enjoyed it but it was more on the sweeter side and I feel as though I wouldn't get it again next time even though it was perfectly moist on the inside. The staff member was so friendly and made me feel welcomed to use their space to get my work done and encouraged me to "spread out" to get my work done well. One of the things that gets me distracted from my work is the question "what am I eating for my next meal?". Food is great and there are plenty of variety of baked goods and drinks for coffee and non coffee drinkers. I think I found my new spot for a local coffee shop! I would recommend this place and I'm looking forward to my next visit already! They do close at 3PM so it's good to set a deadline to get all your work done before they close. I forgot to bring lunches for our hike so we found this adorable sandwich shop, which made me glad we forgot! My boyfriend and I both ordered the Kickin' Chicken which is house-bakes jalapeño cheddar with chicken, buffalo sauce, onion, bacon, mayo and tomatoes. I ordered it without the blue cheese. Anyway, it looked like an average sandwich but it was DELICIOUS. It even came with a little bag of cape cod chips. I'd recommend this place to anyone. I wish we took some of their craft beers to go! We stopped here for lunch after going for a hike on Mt Wachusett. It's a quaint shop with lots of outdoor seating - perfect place to relax and unwind after some physical activity. They offer a number of different sandwiches and baked goods - I got a bacon/avocado sandwich which was very good. The bacon was crispy without being overcooked, and the avocado was ripe and gave a nice creaminess to the sandwich. The cookie was really good too, would recommend if you're in the area. read more

Decided to try this place after a hike up Wachusett Mountain based on all of the good reviews. Checked out the menu before driving over since I'd read their selection was pretty limited. They actually have quite a few sandwiches on the menu, as well as the Create Your Own option, so there's plenty to choose from. I went with the Olde English with a few minor changes (havarti instead of cheddar cheese, and ciabatta instead of multi-grain bread), panini style. First off, the bag of chips included is laughable. There were about 12 potato chips inside; I didn't even know they made serving sizes that small! However, the size of the sandwich more than made up for it and in the end, I didn't really miss the chips. Second, the homemade pickle looked super fresh, but had an overwhelming salty flavor. No tart dill pickle flavor whatsoever, which was disappointing, but not enough to ruin the meal. The sandwich was the true star! Packed full of Boar's Head roast beef (cooked med rare-medium, just right!) and the horseradish mayo adds a nice touch. You can see, it was pretty substantial. No complaints here! I also got a Regular size cup of Moose Tracks ice cream. There was so much ice cream, I was afraid I couldn't eat it all (don't worry, I totally did, and enjoyed every minute). Tiny water cup included in picture for scale to show just how generous the portion was. I also highly recommend this flavor, as the fudge ribbon throughout has a crunchy cookie flavor/texture similar to the cookie layer in Dairy Queen ice cream cakes (the part separating your chocolate and vanilla ice cream layers). Picked up a couple baked goods to bring home based on other reviews. Everything in the case looked delicious; it was hard to choose only 2 things! They also carry locally made bread, soaps, and other knick knacks. Also a pretty big wine selection! All in all, I definitely recommend this place. Mountainside Review We were a party of 4 seated at Table #16 the Friday night over the private Valentine Weekend. I need to get this off my chest as the service was sub par, the main entrée cold and the wait times for drinks and menu items significant. Did I say we were Table #16? Well that was the last table. Drink Ordering Our "waiter", wearing baseball cap turned front to back, took our drink order before the other 15 tables were all seated so we thought there would be no real wait. Well, the bottle of wine, the draft beer and the cocktail we ordered were all prepared and sitting on the top of the bar in plain view of our table. One of the other bartenders comes along and grabs the bottle of wine and pours a glass out of it, (probably to satisfy his order), and puts the bottle back on the bar next to our other drinks. Now our "waiter" finally picks up the entire order (now remember the wine bottle is missing at least a glass of wine out of it) brings it to our table and places everything on our table and walks away. My sister and wife ordered the wine and we realized right away that something was horribly wrong with our drink order. Once we could finally get the "waiter" to come back to our table, having busied himself taking drink orders of other diners as they arrived, we mentioned to him that the wine bottle he had brought over was missing a third of the bottle. (I'm not making this up). He looks at my sister and says, "That's the way they come!" as if we were supposed to accept that as fact. Who you trying to kid, Mr. "Waiter"? Well eventually the large bearded gentleman behind the bar fetched another full bottle and brought it to us and filled the two wine glasses as we expected should have been done in the first place. That was the tale of the drinks. Chowder My wife and I ordered the chowder which was piping hot and served in large soup dishes with some baked bread on the side. Very tasty and creamy. Everything would have been fine at this point but we were never given any soup spoons and had to resort to using our teaspoons the entire time. The hope of getting some employee's attention to request a couple of soup spoons was dim as no follow-up ever came from any staff member and our recent drink order experience hung in the air over our table. Main Entrees The main entrée came eventually but was cold. Remember we were Table #16 so we watched as 15 other tables were served first and we were last. Wouldn't have been a big deal had the flank steak we ordered been hot but it wasn't and neither were the vegetables or the gravy served over the meat. Basically, a cold meal was served. I made a comment to my wife at the time that "we should have brought our microwave". I tried imagining the busy kitchen with the plates being prepared ahead of time; all the plates without proper heat lamps or warming ovens. Table #1 properly got the hottest meals if my theory is correct. The food quantity and flavor was good but the food was cold and no staff member seemed to care. Just saying. Dessert The dessert was delicious and we did manage to get coffees served from our "waiter". Overview We liked the quaint atmosphere and the restrooms were very clean. The dining room was noticeably chilly and the spacing between tables could have been greater. (Covid) Our expectations weren't very high and going there for the first time for this theme dinner was expected to be a nice night out with my sister and her husband. We had always wanted to try this place and had driven by hundreds of times Would I go back there? Probably, but to have coffee and Danish or maybe for lunch and more soup and bread. I think success for these theme dinners is not too far off for the Mountain-side. Having worked in many restaurants myself, I would pay more attention to tableside customer service, possibly stagger seating times to avoid system gridlock and seriously focus on food quality (temperature NOT taste).
