I'm reviewing the rentals, facilities and the business's atmosphere. I recommend the kayak rentals and the drop off float down the river. It's a 3-3.5 hour float and requires some portage. The whole family (there are no rapids; I recommend ages 11+) can feel connected to nature and that've had an enjoyable half day laid back kayak excursion in the Adirondacks. Look at the reviews before purchasing! I wish I had - reviews this low speak for themselves. Just one of those especially icky experiences that will probably not be worth whatever you are coming to purchase. The website is buggy and looks like it's from the 90s. I was sent a different item from one pictured, but customer service was rude and condescending, and won't do anything to help besides tell me I should have inspected the order review page better (to account for errors and misrepresentation from their product page, I suppose...) The prices are not worth it either - I paid $20 for a baby t shirt that isn't even the one I searched to find. Sounds like for kayak rentals they are just as "lovely" to deal with and upstanding in business practices.... read more

Easy purchase in times when supplies are very limited. I contacted the business by telephone and spoke to Henry who confirmed availability and price politely. I drove two hours to their location and was treated by all staff cordially and shown the canoe I inquired about. Made the purchase, they cleaned and prepared the canoe while I paid, assisted loading and I was there maybe 20 minutes tops. Canoe was fair priced and they treated me well. My husband and I purchased a $2300 canoe from them in the beginning of January. We were told 2 weeks for pick up. Called a month later, told two weeks for pick up. Called back today and when I very politely asked when I might expect to be able to pick up my boat, I was treated in an absurdly hostile manner, the "sales person" yelled at me and told me that I "would just have to wait" and almost brought me to tears with his over the top rudeness. One of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had in my life. I am not a overly demanding person, and I don't think it is overly pushy to ask when I might recieve my purchase. They were certainly quick to take my money, and not fill the obligation on their end. Awful awful company to deal with. read more

I bought a Patagonia belt that never seemed to work properly. I know, belts are not high tech or difficult to figure out. After several months, and wearing the belt about three times, I went online and discovered that patagonia installed the belt buckle backwards. I assumed a quick explanation and swap of product and I would be on my way. "We do not accept returns after you worn the product and don't have original packaging." Seriously, it is a defective product. Although I spend thousands of dollars in there every year, and I prefer to support local businesses, I will not purchase another product from Mountainman. 5 Stars for the selection of kayaks, canoes, and SUPs (my personal favorite.) You can take a tour, rent for a few hours, days or a week! I was also told they sell all of their gently used equipment at the end of the season for 40% off. they have a lot of gear for sale too if you need to get outfitted for your adventures! 5 stars for two very nice staff members who made sure our paddle boards were inflated enough and tied them onto the roof of the car. 1 star for the staff member who charged us the wrong price the first day so we had to pay more when we came to pick them up. 1 star for same staffer who called my boyfriend a scumbag for wearing the same t-shirt two days in a row! Enjoyed spending time on the water. First time for several of us in a kayak. I was really surprised at how stable they were. We took the upstream route (2.5 hours). When we returned, since there was still some daylight we decided to trek downstream for a while. The scenery was pretty good but wished we had seen some sort of wildlife. We saw only a couple of small fish and turtles. We packed out lunch and grouped near some weed beds all together and ate and drank, pretty cool experience. read more

The absolute worst service I have ever experienced inu life. Gave us canoes and kayaks with false information on what campsites to go to as well as making us pay for a kayak that was ruined on the trip and did not refund us for two days we lost on the trip from the damaged kayak. Horrible experience at this place thanks to the "manager". Rude, dismissive and condescending. Rented 2 SUP's for 2 days. $250. Brought one back after 2 hours with damages caused by my son. Accidents happen and I was very sorry and of course, willing to pay to have it repaired. The "manager" threatened to make me pay for the depreciation caused by the damages ($700+). This is a well used rental board which he kept referring to as "practically new". Plus would not let me exchange or refund my 2.5 day rental. The repair guy Will was awesome. Came out and said $65 which I am very happy to pay for! I just don't understand why they are keeping my $125 with no exchange. Worst customer service policy. Worst treatment. This was supposed to be fun! Well, they have my $125 in exchange for an undying hatred of this business which I will pass onto my friends and family. read more

I will never do business with this company again.  Their business ethics and values don't match mine. As many people know, it has been hard to find kayaks to buy in the capital region due to the extremely high demand created by the pandemic. Every store in Albany has been sold out for sometime. I called around and finally found a handful of kayaks for sale at the Mountainman Outdoor Supply Co in Saratoga. I drove to their store and bought one of their last kayaks ...but I didn't like the color.  No worries, I was grateful to have found one. However, after buying the kayak, the staff told me that they were expecting a big shipment in 2 weeks and I should come back then to see if they had the color I wanted and they could probably swap boats if they were the same.  Based on that advice, I left the kayak I had just bought in their store and decided to come back.       I drove back to the store when their new shipment arrived and as luck would have it they had the same kayak I had bought but in the color I was looking for. I asked if I could simply swap the boats since the kayak I had bought never left their store.  The staff told me they should be able to do that but had to check with a man described as the company's owner.   Unfortunately, the owner was not accommodating or nice in anyway. He told me that due to the pandemic and high demand for his kayaks they would sell out their new shipment in 1-2 days and if I wanted to swap the same kayaks to simply get the different color I had to pay him $100 more.  Wow! Talk about price gouging during the pandemic. I asked if he could please work with me on this simple request.  I told him that the kayak I had purchased never left his store and was brand new. I had spent over $1000 on it and drove 4 hours (roundtrip) to pick it up.  It was an easy swap. I thought the owner would want to accommodate a customer's simple request for the goodwill of his company.  Instead, the owner responded by saying that other customers spent over $10k on his kayaks and came from Oklahoma (really??) to buy his kayaks and therefore my effort wasn't worth it for him to accommodate me.  At which point he said "I don't have time for this" and walked way.  I thought my simple request was reasonable. I never raised my voice.  I was shocked by the outrageous treatment. Capitalism is alive and well during the pandemic.     I don't know about you, but I don't appreciate being price gouged due to the pandemic or being demeaned or treated like a second class citizen by a store I went out of my way to patronize and spent a lot of money in.  The owner's actions were so egregious that afterwards two staffers at the store apologized profusely to me about the way I was treated.  At least the staff was decent.  I've been in business for close to 30 years and have never treated a client or customer like this and would never take advantage of somebody financially in a pandemic.  I will never do business with this company again.  Their business ethics and values don't match mine. read more

I'm relatively new to kayaking and just bought my first tour kayak from them. In the process, I called, emailed, and otherwise pestered Will and Joseph for information while deciding which boat to buy. I gave them plenty of opportunity to be irritated with me with my indecisiveness and repeated need for information during the process. They were patient and helpful, and ultimately hooked me up with a great kayak, a Wilderness Systems Focus 150. I'm really happy that I used Mountainman Outdoor Supply, and totally recommend them! Update: when I took delivery of my boat, a small piece of gear was forgotten. When I emailed them about it they promptly informed me it would be shipped my way! :) read more

Do not buy from this store; you will be lied to. Very bad business practices. I bought a $900 bike from there as well as other biking gear. The gentleman who sold me the bike was polite/knowledgeable and stated i could test drive it in their gravel parking lot but couldnt go elsewhere with it. He stated that when I got it home and when i was able to really ride it, if it needed any adjustments just bring it back and they will take care of it. I got it home and as I was finally able to go through all the gears, the bike would not shift into the last two gears and the front disc brake was making a rattling noise when going around a turn above 15mph. I called and spoke to the guy who sold me the bike and he said bring it back and they will take care of it. On 09/02/22 I brought my bike there and the girl at the front desk said "Sorry, our bike guy took a nursing job so there isn't much we can do, Ill have my manager call you". I received a call from Mike the manager and I explained how I just spend a pretty good amount on a bike that needed an adjustment. Mike said "Sorry, bikes are sold as is, like a car, once you drive it off the lot there is nothing we can do". He told me to bring it to a bike shop to get it fixed. I asked if they would pay for it since I just spent almost a grand at his store. He said no there is nothing we can do I told him about the scenario and he said "do you have it in writing that he said to bring it back if it needed adjustments". Mike was rude and completely clueless on how to conduct business. He compared my scenario to buying a new car and bringing it back with a popped tire. That didnt even make sense. If you wonder why your business may be hurting, it's bad business and people like Mike that drive customers away and to other stores. Please stay away from this place and shop elsewhere for better customer service. It is pretty disappointing that I spent almost $1000 on a bike that I now have to pay to get it adjusted at another bike shop. If you have no bike tech, a simple fix would be for him to say bring it to the nearest bike shop to get it adjusted and we will take care of but Mike said it wasnt his problem then hung up on me. I purchased my Radisson canoe from Mountainman Outdoor Supply in late April of this year. I live in VA, so had to find a company that would ship. Even after shipping, they were the cheapest price of any Radisson dealer I found online and that was when comparing their price + shipping to the before shipping price of other dealers. They got the canoe shipped to me without a scratch. Will and Alyssa were also extremely helpful in letting me know what kind of rack I needed for my canoe and vehicle. They also spent a lot of time with me answering all my questions through phone and email to make sure I had all the gear I needed. I've used the canoe all summer long and am thrilled with it. My husband and I purchased our kayaks here a couple of years ago. We came back last weekend to take the shuttle up so we could paddle down the river. I had called the day before to see what time the last shuttle would leave and was told 2 p.m. We drove 3 hours to get to Old Forge, and when we arrived at Mountainman at 1:15 p.m., the manager informed us that the last shuttle left at 1. We preceded to tell him that I had called the day before to check on the time and he angrily called his other store to berate the staff right in front of us. He said they were now on Fall hours (the weekend before Labor Day). He was very rude, however, he agreed to shuttle us to the drop off. He also told the driver to get us their quickly and not to worry about getting us their safe and secure! Anyway, the trip was fun. It is hard for me to carry my kayak the 1/4 mile through the woods to avoid the rapids. The young person who drove the shuttle was very sweet. We were quite shocked that the manager of the rental area would be so rude when they were only transporting us a couple of miles up the road and charged $24 to do so. We were back within 2 1/2 hours, long before they closed at 6. read more

Loved this place. My girlfriend and I rented a kayak this passed Sat. It was great. We went around 10 to start our paddle. The water was calm and no one was on the water yet. The owner told us the three ways we could go and we went down two of the paths. Around noon we saw more paddlers out but it was nice being the only one on the water. We took the Rondaxe Road trip down the Moose River. They drove us to the site and we had a great trip heading down stream. They recommended allowing 6 to 7 hours but it took our family only about 4 hours and we are newbies to paddling. we had a tandem canoe with our dog and our two girls took a tandem kayak. Great fun and only $120. A pretty fair price a half day of fun. The portage wasn't too bad. There were many single parent mom's with kids but many people to lend a hand. VERY friendly people at the desk offering suggestions and pointers. These people can do it right!! read more

Just bought a canoe and all the accessories this past weekend. The service was great and the people are super friendly and they made the whole family feel comfortable. We got a great price and we are all super happy. We took the canoe out on a remote lake on labor day just the day after we bought it and had the best day we have had all summer! Went kayaking with my wife and daughter and had a great time. However.....there is a portage where you exit the river to avoid the rapids - no problem there - to avoid the rapids you have to carry your kayak through the woods for what had to be a quarter mile or more- problem if you are not built for carry kayaks. (Mine was a two person kayak and my wife has limited ability to hike. Thankfully my daughter got my genes for strength) on the up side, the dip in the water after carrying those kayaks was priceless. Second problem: they give you absolutely no directions of where to go on the river or any indication of how far you went. My crew missed the docking area , which is a sharp u turn as you approach the bridge in route 28. This, as it turned out, allowed us to continue our adventure for another mile when we reached an impassable portion of the river requiring us to turn around and paddle another mile back. Shout out to 2013 Tickner's Canoes, 117 Riverside Lane, Old Forge, NY 13420. (315) 369-6286 for giving us directions back. Finally, after getting back to mountainman, the guy who assists upon docking said, " yeah, we saw you go by. Didn't know what you were doing." All in all we had fun on our adventure and thanks to mountainman we were able to consume an extra 1000 calories at dinner thanks to the additional two miles of rowing. Thanks read more

Everyone customer needs to know how greedy and selfish Mountain man outdoor supply is: Mountainman outdoor supply put on a Kayak fishing series this summer which started back in April and was suppose to go all the way until September. Half way through it they decided to cancel it because they weren't making enough money to pay for the kayak that they offered at the end of the series to the winner. So all those people who entered the kayak series never mattered to them, how much time, effort, or money they spent putting into it. As a company you would have thought they would stand by their name and products and finished the series and never had another one but instead they pull the rug out from under the faithful kayak anglers and customers who joined the series every tournament. Some of these kayak anglers drove from utica, glens falls, and even Saratoga just to be in it. Some even rented kayaks for $50 for the day just to be in the tournament but I guess their time and money they put into it wasn't enough. Very disappointed in Mountainman outdoor supply and I thought they were a great company for years and i alone spent thousands there buying my whole kayak set up there and getting many friends to join the tournaments, renting kayaks and even got my friend to buy a $1100 kayak there . I'll never buy another thing again there and will tell everyone I know about my experience and how poor the company is run. I still 2 weeks later have to gotten the refund on my money I spent on the up coming tournaments that no longer exist thanks to a greedy selfish owner. read more

I recently attended Paddle Fest Saratoga. I knew going into it that is just a giant venue for Mountain Man to sell canoes and kayaks, not an actual celebration of paddling but.... I brought a classic canoe with me for sale or trade. The manager "Bill" recognized it was not a run of the mill beater for the camp. The owner John Nemjo was dismissive and rude. I am okay with "we don't take trade ins" but they do. I am okay with "I'd rather you not have a canoe on your truck for sale at my sale", but he didn't say that. He was just a rude jerk that will not get my purchase when I make it. and I am going to buy a canoe. read more

I have been on hiking, fishing, skiing and canoe trips across the country and this was far and away the worst experience I have ever had with an outfitter. After running into issues with a damaged kayak, our trip was forced to be cut short and we lost out on the money we paid for the second half of our trip ($500). When returning to the outfitter at the end of our trip we were verbally assualted and told the minor damages incurred were caused by having "no common sense". The manager Mike was extremely unaccomadating and charged us a ridiculous fee for putting normal wear and tear on their equipment. Later on when talking to the owner, I was disrespected to a level I have never experienced as a customer. After telling the owner our car broke down and seeking advice from a local he laughed and said "that's your problem". If you are planning a trip in the area I would very highly recommend you find another outfitter who will treat you with respect and ensure you have a good experience.i read more

I went to Mountainman Outdoors this morning to seriously purchase a Swift Carbon fiber/Kevlar canoe or maybe trade a Mad River Kevlar canoe that I own as part of the exchange. I told the sales boy that I had cash for the purchase and that was the truth. He told me some of the differences about some of the materials and I asked him to evaluate my Mad River which was on my car. He came back, said he looked at it, and told me that Bill would have to evaluate it and he would not be back 'til next week. So, I left sort-of disappointed that I really was talked out of buying something that I was interested in and had cash to purchase. The sales boy told me that it would cost at least $600. to ship it to NC My home state. My significant other was with me and sitting in the car and as we drove out the parking lot, he told me that no one came to the car to inspect the Mad River. So, it seems that the sales boy was not honest with me. I don't know what his name was but he obviously had no interest in completing a sale for his company. Management and watercraft purchasers need this information...Good luck. I'll find out where the factory is in Ontario and give them my business !!! read more
