Snow shoe rental was $15/day and if you drop it off the following day with store open, they only charged us for one day which was great. I also picked up some socks and gloves here. The sock selection is great for winter-y sports sort of stuff and I got some liners as well as hefty mountaineering socks. The mountaineering socks were priced at a premium for $29 for one pair, but they have a lifetime guarantee and I haven't regretted buying them. I've used them outside the hike numerous times during the blustery Buffalo weather where I'm from. I also bought a pair of mittens and man the mittens here were very expensive! The cheapest pair I could find was $89, but they are indeed very warm and hopefully will last me for a very long time with many outdoor winter adventures to be had in said mittens. All in all, the staff at the store was great and honest and didn't try to upsell us on anything we may not need. I'd definitely recommend stopping into the Mountaineer -- some knowledgable staff and great equipment! They also rent hiking boots and crampons!

Even gas prices, considering Crossroads is a bit off the beaten path, are comparable to the Stewart's on rte 8. And my friend, Locomotive Breath, who never passes up an opportunity to patronize a bathroom, says the men's room is clean and the "bathroom tissue" (toilet paper) is 2-ply! The water was a bit calm but there were a few parts that were crazy. I was in the back of the raft with our guide so that made me feel a bit safer (I'm adventurous but this definitely had my heart racing as a newbie). My fiancé and friends (they've gone white water rafting before) thought the water was too calm and mentioned coming back when the snow is melting and there are more white caps. Our guide was fun and was trying to get us to "surf" our raft next to a rock which was cool. He also jokingly led us into a rock and I flew forward (luckily he caught me before I went too far ha). When you do go, they provide all of the gear you need and more. Buses take you to and from the river. You will also have to help lift the raft to the water with your group (I ended up slipping and falling on the rocks going down to the river so that was "fun", there are snacks/lunch provided when there's a break in between rafting. Towards the end, it was so calm, we had to row for a good mile or two to get us back. When you get back, dinner is provided and it was delicious! I had a fun time and I do want to come back when the water is choppier. Summer was a good choice for a first timer. All in all, I loved this company and our guide (I want to say his name was Buzz).
