But now, it's near and dear to my heart, not just for the rustic decor and furniture that have graced our family camp's interior for years... But because of the books... Old Forge Hardware's vast bookstore is hands down the largest and broadest in genre scope for 100 miles, stocked to the stacks with ADK history, Art, how-to books, true crime, kids' books, adult fantasy & my favorite: HORROR. I haven't coming here as long as I can remember. It is a stable in old Forge. They have everything from food, Bath & body, clothing, books, camping, Christmas, and typical hardware store items. They are extremely pet, friendly, and my dog loves coming in here to get all of the attention. Not a ton Employees but the service is still amazing. I never leave empty-handed, especially with the amazing prices. There was always something new to find. read more

Tons of great stuff in this store! It's a staple stop for us when we come through- not often, but once every handful of years. The proprietor said that they give out 30,000 of the best stickers each year. I know I've seen them everywhere, what about you?! 5 stars for the variety and the kindness of the proprietor. 4 stars for the cost of some items, especially clothing. This store is iconic, built in 1902 and the rooms of "stuff" seem to keep going on and on... definitely worth walking and looking through all the nooks and crannies. Prices are adjusted for the tourist - if you don't mind paying premium, they probably have it. Most notably they have a very large candle room and two rooms full of great books. I'll also mention that this place and its history are a huge draw so be prepared for a big crowd as you shop. read more

Even if you don't have any interest in buying anything here, you should visit it, if only for the experience - and who knows, you may still find something you want. The actual hardware store part is exactly what you would expect, but when you venture into other parts of the store, you might be amazed at the kitchen supplies... and clothing... and camping equipment... and gifts... and the soap table... and the yarn department... and the souvenirs... and the books... need I say more? The prices for a few of these things might be more than you'd want to pay, but also take into consideration the cost of the gas or shipping you might have to pay to get these things elsewhere, plus buying the items here supports a great local business. The clothing is all good-quality and perfect for weather in a part of NY known for its cold winters. The table with the buckets of scented bars of soap was pretty impressive and puts what you see at many chain stores to shame. The kitchen area has a large selection of cast iron cookware. The bookstore carries topographic atlases of every state - something to which I was addicted in the days before GPS/online mapping. "Preserves row" has a large selection of jams, jellies, preserves, sauces, dressings, etc. Don't forget to pet the two canine greeters who will no doubt acknowledge your presence. They are both rescued dogs, very friendly and very happy to make your acqaintance. read more

Me and my family have always shopped here whenever we're in the area. This time was no different as we need a few hundred bucks of camping supplies etc. This time I noticed a sign forbidding the carrying of firearms and threatening a felony arrest if violated. Those of us with permits have gone through a thorough process especially us in law enforcement and former military. That sign told me they don't want my money and I certainly won't be patronizing them as long as they have that policy. read more

This "hardware store" has everything you could possibly imagine and things you couldn't. Smack dab in the middle of town and a huge tourist attraction but it's an amazing walk through because you never know what you may see or find. Cool place, with pretty much a little bit of everything. The staff was fairly attentive, and made a point of greeting us when we came in. Some things are priced well, while others can be found cheaper in nearby stores. But, it was really cool to look around; you never knew what you'd find next. We'll definitely be stopping by, next time we're up in the Adirondacks. read more

Classic, yet touristy spot. Best place to stop in Old Forge for anything from souvenirs to necessities, they have it all. The staff/owners are very friendly and willing to offer vacation suggestions while you check out. Please take some time to go here as it is quite large and there is lots to see. Love this store in Old Forge NY. Although a little pricey for the tourists it's still a must stop while in town. This store has everything you can imagine for the home or outdoors. They offer a very large selection of cast iron as well as a wall of cookie cutters, Woolrich blankets and just about everything in between. Its definitely the center point in Old Forge and offers all the Adirondack gifts that you can think of. Overall if there is one stop while in Old Forge this is it. Old Forge Hardware is one of the oldest established businesses in the central Adirondacks. In the early part of the century they provided the building materials for many of the camps up and down the Fulton Chain. So there is a history there. That hardware store is no longer what is now is a bit touristy. With that being said I still think the place provides a service to the community, it's about the only place that I could ice cube trays without having to drive to Utica. They are a bit pricey, but they have a little bit of everything, so it could be a one stop shopping experience if you need kitchen items. As far as the touristy this go, like souvenirs, you will basically find the same crap there that the push at all the other traps along route 28. But the real gem of the store is their book section, with everything from history books to bird and wildlife of the Adirondacks. They have titles you be hard pressed to even find used on amazon. Old Forge Hardware is a must stop for me whenever I'm up visiting. read more

This place is the ultimate tourist trap. It is full of overpriced random items that no one needs. However, it has been packed on both my visits (with a friend who was convinced they carried a particular licorice she loves). If you are looking for ADK souvenirs, you will find them here, albeit priced a little high. If you are a tchotchke lover, this is your store. If you prefer to spend your money on more practical things, you will almost definitely not like this store. read more

3.5 stars Old Forge Hardware is probably the oldest and most recognized general, hardware, book, and souvenir store in Old Forge. What I think this place is good for is its selection of knitting equipment, books, Adirondack based posters and literature, amount of souvenir shot glasses, basic hardware store, and proximity to the parking lot across the street. Although Old Forge Hardware had these redeeming qualities, overall I was not a fan. Everything in this store is overpriced beyond what is reasonable in some cases and the majority of their souvenirs (unfortunately like many of the other souvenir stores around) are made in china. The quality of many of the items are lacking like their overpriced wobbly and non-authentic looking Adirondack chairs they carry on the second floor. To their defense they are one of the largest stores in all of Old Forge and one of the only places you can get certain items when you need them like kitchen pieces and other general store type items. I just wouldn't go here for and sort of good deals or Adirondack souvenirs. read more

Hardware, hardly! This place has everything I mean everything! Cooking, cleaning, camping, sewing, building, clothing, lodge cast iron, the list goes on! No need for a Walmart in this town or any town if they have an Old Forge Hardware. I have to go back and I finish looking around we spent over an hour and never looked in the hardware section. read more

Their slogan says it all "The Adirondack's Most General Store" is an unbelievably vast network of nooks filled with things that you didn't know you needed, but now have to have. I would never go here for Hardware because it's the most expensive place to get it out of the three hardware stores in town. I would recommended it for their huge row of kitchen gadgets that include things like onion goggles and ginger graters. They also have a small but lovely bookstore with many signed books from Adirondack authors. It's an Old Forge landmark, and must be visited despite the fact that you're going to buy something that's overpriced. read more

I've been camping in the vicinity of Old Forge for almost 15 years now. Without fail, every year, I forget something important, break something important (and need to replace it) or when the weather is bad, I read all of my books and I need a new book. More often than not, Old Forge Hardware is the place where I find those items. It's a great store and has a lot of items that you can't find anywhere else (or at least without driving an hour). Go here, if for nothing other than to experience all that this store holds. Which is literally just about everything. Yes, many items are over priced, but, you are in the mountains dummy, everything is overpriced because you aren't setting foot in wal mart. Oh yeah, you are also supporting a local economy and business and not some ultra large conglomerate. This store holds the old time charm that has unfortunately been lost on most all of Americas stores. This is one of the only places in The area to get those "things you forgot". We needed an air mattress - the one we purchased here didn't work and was super cheap (foot petal). When we tried to return it we got nothing but attitude from the manager but how they wouldn't take returns in air mattresses... And why we didn't call her. Really? We were what going to call at 11 at night? Yes it's part of your policy, but have some room on it. This is a tourist destination ... You're not hurting ! read more

This is a great place to go for those who love to shop for oddities because this place is huge. You could literally spends hours browsing around which isn't bad if that's what you are into. Prices are a little higher than they should be but it's kind of a one stop shopping place for hardware, sporting goods, camping, fishing, cooking, canning, crafts and a whole lot more. The diversity and quality of the merchandise is ok, even good, but the owner has no apparent concept of how to treat a customer; she was unspeakably rude to me this past weekend. It was entirely undeserved. She also feels no responsibility to honor the legalities of pricing and blames her lack of responsibility on customers.
