We took the 4 hour trip and it was so much fun. We went in July so the water was very low with many rocks but we all had a fantastic time! Our guide Mark was just what you want in a guide- kept safety first and fun a close second. He even invited our 8 year old son to join him in the back so he could learn how to be a guide. We did a 4 hr lower Animas River trip. The staff was amazing - from the person who scheduled us over the phone, to the people that checked us in, to the bus driver, to the raft guides. We took the family up here today for a half day trip. Every aspect of it was great. The people on the phone when i called were great and helpful. The guides, Mel and Bama, were awesome. They answered all our questions about the area and gave us some great tips. The rafting trip was awesome. There was so much water running it was crazy! I would go back in a heartbeat. We had a great time with the crew at Mountain Waters Rafting. Our guide Marcus was fabulous. He was an expert on the Animas River and we felt totally at ease with him at the helm. He was a wealth of knowledge and gave us great ideas on local eating establishments and other fun activities. There were 7 of us from Dallas with minimal rafting experience. He was the best for us. I was honestly terrified to do this trip. I did NOT want to get dumped on the river but my husband assured me I'd have fun. Well he was right. Our guide Jeff (Hefffe) was a genuine, sweet guy who truly cared about us as people, not just his costumers. Everyone on his team made sure we were all taken care of from training, to feeding us. I HIGHLY recommended this place! We went down the river, stopped for lunch and drinks in an area that not a lot of people get to see and then hopped on the train to get back to Durango. The positives: Our family had a lot of fun, it's a great activity! Our guide, Michael Roundy, was very knowledgeable and helpful. The negatives: The rapids part was too short. I thought it would be class 3 the whole time, but it was only class 3 for about a minute. The rest of the 3 hours was a class 1-2 and was just floating. The biggest negative is the snack. We expected a water bottle for sure and possibly something individually wrapped like a granola bar. What they gave us was chips poured in a bowl with salsa and cut up apples. It was odd to have a community snack in a bowl with stranger's dirty fingers going into the bowl. The worst part was there were no water bottles, only cups and if you were lucky and got there first, a drink of water. Most of my family tried to get water only to find out the water was gone! Mountain Waters, please take more water on your trips. Overall, we had a great time and loved it. I would still recommend doing this activity. Just bring your own water. read more

Awesome experience. We rode the train up to Silverton and then we got picked up by Beau (or Bo) who drove us down the mountain sharing some interesting stories and facts of the area. When we got down, Beau was our 2 hour raft guide, and he made sure we got our complete ride, and then some. He was a fantastic guide, sharing more stories on the river as well. When we returned, we bought the cd of about 20 awesome pics of our adventure! We will definitely come back for river rafting fun the next time we're in Durango!!! read more

My family took an RV trip from Arizona up to Durango specifically to go rafting since we've never been before! It was just us and one other family but our guides were amazing and had wonderful personalities! We especially loved the lunch that was provided to us as well as the lengthy safety instructions. It did end up pouring rain for a portion of our time but the waters were great and high which made our rafting experience more exciting. We ended up coming across some class 4 rapids and the guides took a few people to go walk up and see just how rough those rapids were for our safety. Our guides decided that the rapids were safe enough to go through and went over safety instructions again for us. Turns out the rapids were a little more intense once we got up to them and our raft actually was pushed up and into a huge rock causing the raft to tip making my entire family actually fall out of the raft into the rushing, strong water. Definitely one of the scariest moments of our life being in the strong water barely being able to swim as the current was pushing us around. The family behind us was able to catch one of my sisters and pull her into their raft and the guide raft was able to get my whole family out of the water as fast as they could. Not going to lie, we thought we were going to die that's how scary it was but due to the guides training, safety instructions and quick thinking my family was all rescued from the water and the only injuries we received were some cuts and bruises from the rocks. We are so thankful that our entire family made it out okay and even though part of our experience was scary we are most definitely going to come back here because we know we are in very good hands and it was a lot of fun! read more

We couldn't have been happier with our trip down the Lower Animas :) We wanted a rafting experience that would introduce our three children (ages 8, 6, and 4) to rafting in a safe yet exciting way. We looked into all the rafting options in town, and Mountain Waters seemed the most-family friendly and could even accommodate our youngest child. Our guide (and co-owner) James did a great job involving the kids and entertaining the adults with his in-depth knowledge of the river, its history, and its wildlife. The River itself was a great mix of excitement with feeling safe, and the bathroom / snack break half way through the trip was much appreciated. Great team! Andy was good, as was Dave. The four-hour trip was just over three hours long, but that was OK by me as I had forgotten to put sunscreen on my legs and was BURNING!
