It is out of the way down a long driveway, and most likely you'll be greeted by their super friendly dog, Hunter. Jim and Margaret are great hosts, providing freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and lemonade upon arrival. The check-in process is short and sweet and they are available when you need them, but the place is big enough to give enough privacy despite the community spaces. I surprised my bf for his birthday and we came up just for one night. We stayed in the Yosemite room and it was perfect. The king bed was super comfortable, and the room had a ceiling fan, flat screen tv, electric fireplace (for ambiance and/or for heat), and the bathroom had a shower and a jacuzzi tub. It was right around the corner from the kitchen, so in terms of noise, you do hear the clinging and clanging of cooking and cabinets/drawers closing, but it wasn't a major issue for us. If you're sensitive to noise, then I would suggest getting a room on the second floor instead. Our room leads off to an external entrance to the back balcony/porch area so we could come and go from the back door instead of going through the house/common area which was nice. There is always access to coffee (fresh brewed in the morning or a Keurig for afternoon) and hot water for tea or hot chocolate. Upstairs, there is a small fridge that has complimentary can sodas and bottles of water for guests to have. I put our bottle of champagne there to chill. The highlight of the stay of course was the breakfast promptly served at 8:30a. We woke up to a beautiful spread and shared a nice breakfast with nice conversation with 12 other guests. It was family style, so we passed the food around and around until we were all miserably/happily stuffed. Margaret's famous cinnabuns were really delicious - super sweet and fresh. Overall - Everything was clean and just really done well with nice subtle touches throughout the B&B (ie. light music in the background of the common areas, fresh cut flowers in the bathroom and bedside, foaming bubble bath by the tub with a pillow, several candles in the room to assist with creating a romantic ambiance, super plush robes and Bath & Body Works shower products (soaps, shampoo, etc) to use... We definitely hope to come back and enjoy/relax again in the near future :)

This cozy little cabin has a loft bedroom with one bed and a half bath. Downstairs is a living room that is equipped with a pull out sofa bed, perfect of an eight-year-old. The grey stone fireplace and chimney occupy the center of the structure and are beautiful. The full kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, dishes, coffee-maker, cups, coffee, tea and there was a plate of fresh-baked cookies waiting for us on the table when we arrived. Just off the kitchen is a full bathroom with a fantastic Jacuzzi tub. But the piece de resistance: the most perfect "settin' porch" overlooking the creek behind. No kidding, the perfect spot for your morning coffee! In the mornings, we walked up the hill to the main house log home with another amazing porch. The innkeepers make a homemade sumptuous breakfast every morning. On the first morning, there was fresh fruit, bacon, eggs, biscuits, cinnamon rolls, baked grits. On the second morning, we had shirred eggs with ham, waffles, Moravian sugar bread, fruit salad. We enjoyed the breakfast at a common table with other guests, sharing our stories of our journeys and adventures. Delish!!

It is out dated but we kinda like that mountainish vibe. We read all the reviews and did our research prior to coming we normally rent a house when we come but decided against this year. There's a game with ping pong table, air hockey, piano, pool table and other stuff. Location is great. The heaters aren't the strongest but it was comfortable. Right next to Fred's store which everything is marked up so stop at the food lion and load up to save a few $ or not .

There are  just a few miles from skiing at Sugar Mountain and Beach Mountain, plus surrounded by lots of other things to do. Pottery,  trout fishing, gem mining, tubing, wineries, and lots of great restaurants! This place has three sleeping areas up to 4 adults and 4 kids. The top floor is a queen bedroom loft, with a half bath. The main floor is a nice size living room with a kitchen open floor plan and a full bath. Down below halfway down the stairs is a washer and dryer (laundry area) and at the bottom of the stairs are 2 bedrooms. one with a king-size bed and one with 2 sets of bunk beds for 4 kids and a full bathroom. Full house Central Air and heating. Parking for at least 2 cars out front and additional spots at the club house. Access to the tennis courts, pool, and hiking trails with lots of open space in the area. You can also bring fishing equipment and fish on the Watauga River that runs through the community. Real clean and a gem of a place!

A separate living room with a futon that is supposed to be used as a couch, however, those days have since passed. Time to replace. The kitchen area which is located in the same space as the living room has a small refrigerator, stove (doesn't work and was filthy), and a microwave. However, it was missing cups, a sharp knife, sponges, etc. The bedroom was a good size with a king size that was very comfortable. The floors were in the same condition as the living room, ground in dirt on wood floors, fans had dirt on them, and the small bathroom had dead bugs in the floor vent. The bathroom stone shower floor was simply disgusting. It needs a deep clean. While we paid for housekeeping, we were notified that there would be no housekeeping the long weekend were there. I did not find the mgmt staff to be of any help when I went looking for a sponge. They couldn't find any sponges anywhere and were supposed to get back to me, never did. The parking spaces for the cottages are directly behind the motel. The parking was insufficient for the number of cottages and penthouses. We found the property manager unprofessional and of no real help to us as we couldn't find a parking space in the entire place. Not a place I would ever refer anyone to.

We have skied Sugar off and on for three residence periods in the Carolinas. Beech Mountain is…read morenearby, so many skiers frequent both. In our case, our son and his family rent a condo and we join them for a family ski together. I pity the people who have never experienced the great snow of the Rocky Mountains and in New England and Utah. Sugar and Beech have to work awfully hard to make up for Mother Nature's short-fall of natural snow. Snow is primarily man-made. And those crews work like crazy all night so long as the temperature is under 40F. Hoses are moved and water is sprayed so as to freeze and fall to the ground as snow. It is quite an effort. The upper parts of Sugar have plenty of snow, but with the regularly over 32F temperatures, the snow is crusty and icy. The lower parts can get pretty ugly with mud puddles and scant coverings of snow. But...it is close to Charlotte and a half-day drive from most of the Carolinas and that is what we have...so we use it and accept it as it is. There is a large parking lot way down at the highway entrance that is serviced by regular shuttle bus services. Slide your skis into the racks on the side of the bus and hop on to get to the lodge. The lodge is roomy with a wall of glass facing the slopes. Tables are plentiful, restrooms are clean and well maintained and security is constantly roaming the building and outside. The snack bar is really great. The prices are less than you would expect with burgers, BBQ and specials running between $6 - 8. A family of four can have a decent lunch without having to mortgage their house. And the workers/staff are so friendly, acting as if you are visiting their personal kitchen. It is living southern hospitality, for sure. Sugar lift tickets are priced by ages. Adults (over 12 YO) all-day are from $44 to $74 with Sundays most expensive. Juniors (5 - 11 YO) all-day are from $35 - $51 and Children (4 and under) ski free. They frequently have specials, like March madness where rates are lower. And there are half-day lift tickets, twilight and night skiing. Slopes are lighted. Military rates are granted at about half-price with military government ID cards and this courtesy is extended to spouses and dependent children. And best of all: 70 years and older ski for FREE! Just go to the office, inside the lodge after showing proof of age. Have to do it every day as they do not sell multi-day lift tickets. They have rentals a skis and snow boards and there is a crew of instructors that you can learn from in groups or private lessons. And the instructors are wonderful with small children. Our 4 year old is now a good little, in-control skier and the 8 & 11 grandchildren do just fine. The whole family hits the slopes. The skiing is not great but you can enjoy. And the resort has tubing, ice skating
