Mountain State Brewery beer is served in locations around West Virgina and is great. The Seneca IPA and Cold Trail Ale are personal favorites But what a treat it was to go to this Thomas brew-pub for some live music and burgers on a Saturday night. The atmosphere is "mountain" with wood and stone decor. The area the band was playing had big barn doors the opening to an area of picnic tables and a corncobs court. Open only on weekends, there is no false pretense here. It is good beer served in mason jars with only hamburgers and hand cut organic fries on the menu. There was a $5 cover the night I was there, and they had a full bar. If you are in the area on the weekend, you need to check it out. Pretty much everyone else will b e there! read more

We were staying on the mountain for our honeymoon. We came across this brewery, which is tucked away. When we came inside it was very friendly and warm. There is a fireplace right in the middle and the bar is made of copper. Very rustic! The bartender was friendly and pretty helpful. It seems like a local hang out. The hours are strange but we did go during the off season. It wasn't very busy at all. There was no food when we were there St Paddy's day and the week after. I enjoyed the beer. Foosball table, corn hole during the warm months, and a nice warm crackling fire in the stone hearth during the colder months! They will fill any and all growlers, too. I love this place! Family friendly with great food, servers, and atmosphere! Depending where you sit you can see the chefs tossing the pizza in the kitchen and putting pizza into the oven. This bar is exactly what you think a small town bar would be. Locals will be sitting on the barstools and throughout the night you'll hear local chatter between the regulars and the bartender. For the atmosphere alone, I give it three stars. Unfortunately the beer was not as good as anticipated. All of their brews tasted watered down. I tried each of their beers in a flight and unfortunately left with a disappointing taste in my mouth. I would not recommend the beers alone to any beer coonosier, such as myself, as they were simply "meh". The food is typical bar food- sandwiches and such, not bad BUT not great. All in all I would say that if you're looking for a cool atmosphere to hang out in for the night, you've found the right place. If you're looking to taste great beers, unfortunately you have not found the place. read more

I give it five stars solely on the beer, the rustic interior and stone fireplace. My husband and I buy their beer at the grocery store where we live and truly enjoy it therefore we knew we had to visit when we were staying at Blackwater Falls State Park. We came on a Sunday. There was no food other than peanuts and pepperoni rolls on the bar. The bartender was not the friendliest. Definitely didn't engage his guests. I'd guess he is either a stoner, stayed up too late the night before or does not enjoy his job. Not a bad experience because the beer was good. We probably wouldn't come back but we plan on visiting another one of their locations. read more

Not sure what other people are drinking, but I found the beer to be awful. The ironic part is they mock Coors, Miller, and Bud, yet taste just as watered down and flavorless as the big 3. Out of the 4 beers I sampled, I found the amber the least appalling. The IPA was a complete joke -- least hoppy IPA I've ever had. The stout was also flavorless. Pizza is decent, but nothing to write home about. read more

Cute place tucked in the cute town of Thomas, Wv. The Brewery itself, caught my eye as I stopped for fuel on my way out of the state. Upon entering I noticed the seating right away. Saw horses liked the bar, giving it a modern rustic look. The bar looked of hammered copper also a nice touch. I asked if growlers were sold, to which the tender answered, yes. I sat down with a menu and asked to sample the few beers on it. She asked for ID, and poured two samples. The Oatmeal also caught my eye, so I asked for a sample of it, as well. She seemed a bit annoyed once I asked for another sample. The bar itself seems to draw a local customer, but also the passerby. Kids ran around, and since I was vision earl dinner time, I could appreciate the sense of comfort and family. The decor and all around subject matter could use some help. The bar decor is cluttered with no clear design idea. The random bar signs are fun, but other random pieces make it a bit confusing and cluttered. Not so appealing to the eye. A fireplace sat to the left of me, mismatch garage hair furniture finds sat on either side. Again, no clear design choice. The mantle followed true with random clutter and no sense of true belonging to brewery's own identity. Also Timmy left was a shelf with bird games, a cute side that read "play me" a nice touch. Some bar top games kept guests laughing and entertained, a social conversation starter and laughter filled the bar as the games became more difficult and the consumption of alcohol made them harder to achieve perfection. I chose a beer to fill my growler, waited quite sometime for the tender to acknowledge I was still there and waiting for it, though she promptly filled and went onto other customers, once I made the order (once she got to me again) a large room with pool tables fills the space in front of the bar, behind the wall of the fireplace. I'd like to see a clearer design layout, but a nice space. Seating outdoors kept the parent's with children happy as the children ran around entertained and overall a good experience. read more

Excellent brewpub and fantastic beer, a stark comparison to the poor beer standards at the other place down the street. It's a comfy little place attached to the back of the brewhouse. We were allowed to bring our own bar snacks in from the gas station next door due to the lack of food, but it's all about the beer here, and I'm fine with that. Not to mention it's one of the CHEAPEST microbreweries in a ski town that I've ever been to. We grabbed a bag of jerky from the "jerky guy" that was delivering their order, it was really nice of the bartender to let us in on that order! The copper bar top is beautiful, the fireplace cozy, and the people all were enjoying themselves as much as we were. This place is a true gem in the area, and our defacto beer stop whenever we are near. read more

I came here on a Saturday night over MLK weekend with a group of 16. The weather was snowy and the roads weren't great so our group made up most of the people there. It was about a 20 minute drive from Timberline Ski Lodge. The service was quick and very friendly and the place has a cool, rustic vibe. The musician played a couple of songs on his guitar for us and he was really great. The beer is really good, take home a growler or two! read more

These people have 4-5 beers, and they do them all very well. I started with the flight, and I couldn't pick a favorite. I typically like stouts and porters, and the Coal Miner's Daughter Stout did not disappoint. Tasted like a stout should. But I also loved the Cold Trail Ale--their lighter offering. Very refreshing for hot weather, but with a little more body than a Bud Light. The bartender was so friendly, and treated us like we were regulars even though it was our first time there. They do not have food, but have a really nice patio to sit and enjoy the beer and nice weather. Pints and growlers were very reasonably priced, and about a dozen people came in to have their growlers filled while we sat at the bar--a good sign! read more

I love this place, and will happily go there any time that I'm in the area. Food, beer, and vibe are all great. I tried the Fire on the Mountain flatbread pizza - delicious. My wife enjoyed the Buffalo Chicken flatbread. And the kids were quite happy with their choice of "cheesy bread", which is basically a flatbread white pizza cut into strips with dipping sauce. Came here for a wedding reception. My friends had an Elvis impersonator DJ a karaoke set for them. The brewery provided several of their beers on keg. I think it was an amber, an IPA and a stout as well as sangria. After a long day hiking nearby this was basically like drinking the sweat of the gods. Family member recommended this place to us; we were pleasantly surprised! While the place is a little on the small side for the amount of people who come -- it's full of great staff and food. I'm not a beer drinker, however, they had some summer cocktails available which were great. Their pizzas were FABULOUS! I was told by the others in my party that the beers were good as well and they also stated that the prices were extremely good, but again, I'm not a beer drinker. The atmosphere is pleasant and fun. My husband and I just returned from a long weekend trip to Blackwater Falls. This was our first time there and the staff did not mention that the restaurants in Davis and Thomas all close by 9. We were extremely hungry and this place was open, according to Google. It certainly did not look open at all and there were 2 cars in the parking lot. (We went on a Saturday night.) The place had a nice "mountainy" feel to it and we were greeted by the bartender and waitress when we came in. The restaurant area was closed off for the evening, even though there is supposedly food served late and karaoke on Saturdays. (We got here at 9:30- there were 3 people at the bar and no karaoke.) My husband got one of their specialty beers, which he said was alright. We were given a menu, which consisted of a few appetizers and "melts" aka fancy grilled cheeses. The sandwiches sounded good and I had high hopes. The menu really talked it up with homemade bread, "grass-fed" pork (which I did not know that pigs ate grass...), organic vegetables, etc. These sandwiches were way below average and I could have made it 10x better in my own kitchen. Barely any flavor and it wasn't even fully cooked. It's a grilled cheese!!! To top it off, it was way over-priced- $10 for grilled cheese sandwich. Ridiculous. I'm most dissatisfied with the price, how awesome the menu made things sound, and the pictures I saw on here- the food looks absolutely nothing like this!! We will not be going back. read more
